I am looking forward to the warmer weather, the grass turning green and the flowers and leaves emerging. Perhaps I can gain some creative inspiration from my Spring Fever! Our members will be very busy for the next couple of months. Our last Chapter Meeting before our Summer hiatus is May 17, 2014, and we will be creating Greeting Cards with Patty Dawes. The next time we get together after that (May 31 and June 1) will be for the Lynne Andrews Seminar which was rescheduled from February, when her flight was canceled due to the weather. And, then, on June 21 and June 22, we will be hosting a Seminar with Beth Wagner. Normally, we do not have June Seminars, but since the weekend in April when we should have held a seminar was the Easter weekend, we decided to hold it in June. Our very own First Vice-President, Gloria Bogs, will not be able to attend our May Chapter Meeting because she will be attending the 42nd Annual Society of Decorative Painters Conference in San Diego, California. She had three pieces accepted into the Juried Art Exhibition this year. As you will recall, last year, Gloria won the Award of Excellence-Best in Show Award for her oil painting on canvas of a Zebra, entitled “Stripes.” She also won 2nd Place in the “Animals” category for “Patterned After Its Mother,” an oil painting on canvas of a Mother and Baby Giraffe. We are so proud of you, Gloria, and we wish you the best of luck!!! Seminars Carol Wiksten [email protected] Historians Sue Nemec [email protected] President’s Message A big “Thank You” to all members who participated in our Gold Canyon Fundraiser. We did not get 100% participation from our membership, as I had hoped, but we certainly appreciate those who did participate. We should have our orders within a week or so. Judy Selangowski [email protected] Raffle Dorothy Mestan [email protected] Gerri Radon [email protected] Ways and Means Bev Fry [email protected] I want to thank Pam Carley who has volunteered to chair our Holiday Luncheon. We are so thankful for members who choose to share their time, talents and efforts with us! It is with a very heavy heart that I deliver the following news to you. Due to the fact that we have no one to chair Hospitality, the Board has decided to forego Hospitality at our May Chapter Meeting. Please bring your own coffee, tea, treats and lunch for this meeting. Those of you who have already paid for lunch, your money will be refunded to you. St. John Crisis Center provides needy children with an annual Christmas Party. The club purchased canvas bags and will distribute at the next meeting to members in bundles of five including patterns. Jan requested donations of gloves and hats and school supplies. She will have a list together by next meeting. At 10:50 a.m., a motion was made by Marge Coughlin to adjourn the meeting, it was seconded by Sandy Glowinkie. Joan Muzzey, Secretary CRISIS CENTER Hi! It's me! Regarding the Crisis Center in Tinley Park.... At the last meeting we had NO donations for the Crisis Center's mom's or kids. I hope this is just an oversight and our club is not losing interest. Theresa Krohn and Pat Brown have taken over this project for Joan and myself and your painted totes and material items are greatly appreciated. Take a look at the list of items (at the end of this newsletter) the Center is in need of and maybe you have an item or two to donate. If you have any of the canvas totes that need to be painted and returned, please bring them to the May meeting. Our group has always been extremely generous and I'm certain we will continue to do so. Remember the Crisis Center is counting on us. Luv Ya! Georgia Wanda Corrections Please correct the following dates under the 2015 Calendar of Events - Change dates to these listed. South Side Brushes has 56 members currently - but - we have room for lots more. If you know anyone that might benefit from belonging to our "group" please invite them to "take a look". You don't have to wait for the September meeting in order to bring a guest - your friends and relatives are welcome anytime. If you have any connections with local newspapers, art groups or anyone that can help us spread the news about South Side Brushes, please ask for their help. Every one of us brings new life and unique qualities to the "group" and we all benefit from our members talents. Adding new people can only make us more fun to be around. I have about 10 undelivered 2014 Membership Books - if you were not at our March meeting and did not get a book (some were taken by your friends) please do your best to attend the May meeting and pick your copy up. I hope to see a few NEW faces among us at the May meeting. Thanks.... Georgia Wanda - Membership Chair (708) 539-1561 9 Ways and Means The ways and means table had something for everyone at our March meeting from Easter items to putty to fill nail holes and nicks and dings in your wood painting surfaces. Barbara even showed how the putty can be used on ceramic pieces. Hope everyone got a chance to see her demonstration. We still have a few more containers left if you find you need more. Once again Georgia Wanda donated painted totes for us to sell for the club (Georgia, thanks and “Love Ya”). Barb Urban painted mats for picture frames and we both painted Easter items. Thanks to all who purchased items from the Ways and means table as all the profit made goes back to our club to help defray the cost of our seminars. We thank you. Bev and Barb Spring Raffle Our Spring Fundraiser with Gold Canyon kicked off at our March meeting. Renee, our consultant was on hand to let us sample the scents and talk about her products. She did sell some items at the meeting which do count towards our profit. As of now our order has been placed and we are awaiting delivery. And by the time you read this in the newsletter, you should be enjoying your purchase. I will announce the total profit and the winner of the raffle at our May meeting. CLASS STARTS AT: 9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. SATURDAY, May 31 -- SNOWMEN FAMILY - SUNDAY, June 1 -- HARE'S TROUBLE 12 Seminars – Lynne Andrews – Prepping info revisited SNOWMEN FAMILY - Saturday – Learn Lynne's technique on floating, draped trees as well as other techniques. SURFACE: Wood frame 8 1/4 " square with birch insert (insert measures 6 1/2 " square) or birch wood mitten measuring 11" long x 8 "wide. Surface can be purchased from Carol till Jan 1 or thru Lynne after that time. PAINT: Americana, which will be provided by DecoArt. You will need the prep paint - Winter Blue if using the frame and Buttermilk if using the mitten. BRUSHES: Loew-Cornell #4, #8 ultraround (series 7020), #8 scumbler (series 2014), good assortment of smaller Maxine’s mops 1/4", 1/2" (series 270), #2 duster/stippler (series 4). Lynne will have all the brushes available for sale at the seminar. You are welcome to use any of your favorite brushes in place of Lynne’s. MISC SUPPLIES: tracing paper, white transfer paper, stylus. PREPARATION: Prepare whatever surface you are painting on by sanding then sealing, then base coating in Winter Blue for frame insert or Buttermilk if using the mitten. Two coats will be needed on either surface. Transfer the design onto the surface. You may have to increase or decrease depending on what surface you are using. HARE’S TROUBLE – Sunday SURFACE: Available from Steph's Folk Art Item # TCPB 9, however, feel free to substitute with any surface. PAINT: Americana, Deco Art will provide the paint for our seminar but you will need Reindeer Moss Green, Antique White and Graphite for the prep work. In addition to the paint, you will need DECO ART WEATHER WOOD. BRUSHES: Loew-Cornell #4, #8 ultra round (series 7020), #4, #8 scumbler (series 2014), Good assortment of small mops such as Maxine's (series 270), 32 duster/stippler (series 4). MISC SUPPLIES: 400 grit sandpaper, DecoArt Weather Wood, tracing paper, transfer paper, medium and fine point permanent black marker, Americana sealer/Finisher. PREPARATION: Lightly sand the bottom of the box. Base coat the bottom with two solid coats of Reindeer Moss Green, lightly sanding between coats. Base coat the top of the box (lid) with two solid coats of Antique White. Sand between coats. The inside of the box, including underside of the lid are base coated in Antique White. PREPARATION: Transfer the outline of the circle onto the top of the lid for now (including border where the stitch marks go). Paint a solid coat of Graphite onto the circle. Once Graphite applied, apply Weathered Wood on top to the Graphite, following manufacturer's label directions. Lynne used short, choppy strokes (slop slap) and a little heavy with the medium. This will give you small more controlled crackling. The longer the strokes, the longer and wider the cracks. Apply a coat of Antique White over the dried weathered Wood. Do not over work the paint. It should start to crackle immediately. Let dry completely. You will need to spray several light coats of Americana Sealer/Finisher on top of the crackled area. If you don't do this step, it will get gummy and too difficult to control the washes. Once the sealer is dry, transfer the pattern onto the surface. Leave the verse off for now. 13 South Side Brushes - Beth Wagner Seminar June 21st & 22nd, 2014 Location: Palos Heights Recreational Center 6601 W. 127th St. Palos Heights, IL 60463 708-361-1807 *Saturday surface fee $7.00 10x14 approx.
