UNB Student Union Orientation Constitution

Article 1 – Name
1. The Organization shall hereby by known as the University of New Brunswick Orientation
(UNBSU) Orientation.
Article 2 – Purpose
2. The purpose of the UNBSU Orientation Constitution is to help the UNBSU Orientation
Committee and Director of Academic Support organize and carry out non-alcoholic and
substance-free programs and activities for the purpose of familiarizing new students with the
University of New Brunswick-Fredericton, and its surrounding community.
Article 3 – Reporting Relationship
3. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall report to the President of the UNB Student Union and
the Director of Academic Support on a minimum of a weekly basis.
4. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall work in close consultation with the Director of Academic
Support.
5. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall report to the BlackShirts and RedShirts on a bi-weekly
basis.
6. Orientation-related materials require University approval through the office of the Director of
Academic Support and the President of the UNB Student Union.
7. The UNBSU Orientation is financially accountable to the UNB Student Union.
Article 4 – Consultation
8. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall meet and consult with Residential Life on a minimum of
a monthly basis to coordinate Orientation-related activities.
9. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall work with the City of Fredericton, where appropriate, to
facilitate and nurture the relationship between the UNBSU, UNB, and the City.
10. The University’s Orientation Committee (SEM-OAC) which meets about once monthly in the
summer months to facilitate coordination of campus-wide programming.
Article 5 – The UNBSU Orientation Executive
11. The UNBSU Orientation Executive shall consist of the following three positions:
a. The Orientation Chair
b. The Shinerama Chair
c. The Treasurer
12. Eligibility of the Orientation and Shinerama Chairs:
a. Must be an Ordinary member of the Student Union in good academic standing.
b. Must be available for the position between January 1st and December 31st of a given
year
c. Must be available to work in the UNBSU office full-time throughout the summer (May
through August). Full-time is thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hours a week day-time

working hours Monday to Friday with the inclusion of RedShirt training and Orientation
week which requires full participation.
d. Must be available to work on a part-time basis during the academic year.
e. Must have previous Orientation experience or significant leadership experience in a
campus environment.
f. Must be available for BlackShirt and RedShirt training sessions as well as Orientation
Week.
13. Eligibility of the Treasurer
a. The UNBSU VP Finance & Operations shall be the UNBSU Orientation Treasurer.
b. Must be available for BlackShirt and RedShirt training sessions as well as Orientation
Week.
Article 6 – The UNBSU Orientation Committee
14. The composition of, hiring procedures, remuneration of, the duties of, and the eligibility of the
members UNBSU Orientation Committee are defined in Article 1 of the UNBSU Orientation
Bylaws.
a. With the exception of the eligibility of the members of the UNBSU Orientation
Executive, this is defined in Article 5 of this Constititution.
Article 7 – Meetings
15. The UNBSU Orientation Committee shall have at least two recruitment meetings; one in the
month of January and one in the month of February. The purpose of these meetings is to recruit
and inform potential committee members. These meetings must be advertised through all
reasonable means of communication.
16. A UNBSU Orientation General Meeting shall be held in the month of March.
Article 8 – Finances
17. All information pertaining to UNBSU Orientation Finances is found in the UNBSU Orientation
Financial Policy.
Article 9 – Bylaws
18. The Organization shall have the authority to adopt or amend Bylaws for the conduct of its
affairs. The procedures for adopting or amending Bylaws shall be specified in the UNBSU
Orientation Bylaws
Article 8 – Amendments
19. Proposals for amendments to the UNBSU Orientation Constitution must come from an ad-hoc
committee of the UNBSU Council. This ad-hoc committee must consult with the current UNBSU
Orientation Committee and the Director of Academic Support.
20. Amendments to the constitution must be ratified by the UNB Student Union council.
