Shabbat Festivities to Celebrate Hazzan Menes’ Installation Shabbat morning, April 14, will be a joyous occasion for our congregation as Hazzan Rob Menes is officially installed. Hazzan Menes has greatly enriched the musical life of our synagogue since he and his wife Margot came to Beth Shalom last August. Hazzan Rob Menes As part of the festivities, Hazzan Henry Rosenblum, Dean of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music at the Jewish Theological Seminary, will join Hazzan Menes during Shabbat morning services, 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. At the conclusion of services from 11:30 a.m. until noon, Hazzan Rosenblum will conduct the official installation ceremony, and a special Kiddush luncheon will follow. To conclude Shabbat, Minha services at 6 p.m. in the Katz Chapel will precede Seudah Shlisheet (the third Shabbat meal) and a Cantorial Interlude with Hazzan Menes and Hazzan Rosenblum in the Chapel Lounge. The two Hazzanim will then lead Maariv, a Melavah Malka and Havdalah from 7:15 to 8 p.m in the Katz Chapel. Hazzan Menes’ passion for singing in prayer led him to earn his Diploma of Hazzan from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2006, following over 20 years in secular pursuits. He also holds a Master of Sacred Music, a B.A. in physics and mathematics from Cornell University and a M.Sc. in agricultural engineering. Hazzan Rosenblum is the first Hazzan to hold the position of Dean of the H. L. Miller Hazzan Henry Rosenblum Cantorial School. He was appointed in 1999 and was awarded a Doctor of Music, Honoris Causa, from JTS in 2002. Co-chairs for the Installation Shabbat are Bev Newman and Natalie Hammer. From Slavery to Freedom This year, April is the month that encourages us to focus on the disparate events in Jewish history – from our escape from slavery as told in the Passover story to the remembrances of Yom HaShoah and Israel Independence Day. February 2006 April 2007 Shevat 5766 Nisan-Iyar 5767 Vol. 77, No. 7 Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz will present a program “From Slavery to Freedom” Thursday, April 19, 7 p.m. in Goldsmith Hall at the Lamar Campus. She will be joined by Yachad - The Traveling Tefillah Band, presenting songs from both the Holocaust years and modernday Israel. This program is the second event of our ongoing “Spirit of the Woman” series. Regarding this evening, Rabbi Katz noted, “It is particularly fitting that we think about the cycles in Jewish history, during this week between Yom HaShoah and Israel Independence Day. We will reflect on these cycles as we move from the depths of the Shoah to the heights of the creation of the state of Israel.” A dessert reception will follow the program. There is no charge, but reservations are requested. One, taken in the late 1930’s, is of my mother along with six of her siblings and their father. Of those pictured, four survived the Holocaust, settled in Kansas City, and raised families. Another is of my father’s aunt and uncle, along with their seven children. Of those shown in that picture, there was one survivor, the only relative my father had left after the war. For me, the need to be aware of the Holocaust and its continuing impact on all of us is as obvious as the photographs on the wall, as real as the stories my parents tell. In 1939, there were almost 17 million Jews in the world. Today there are fewer than 14 million. In that period the world population has tripled to more than 6 billion. Of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, approximately 25% were children who will never have descendants. The Israel Knesset established Yom HaShoah in 1959 as a day to remember the Holocaust. It comes just after Passover and just before Israel Independence Day. The timing is no coincidence. At our seders, we retell the story of our people moving from repression to freedom. In so doing, we make ourselves more aware of the inhumanity in today’s world, the first step towards doing what we can to help. Remembering those who were lost in the Holocaust, acknowledging those who survived and rebuilt their lives, and honoring those who helped them, are all part of a story which is every bit as compelling and instructive as the Exodus from Egypt. There are many opportunities this month for us to remind ourselves of the impact the Holocaust has had. Two of these are the community Yom HaShoah service (see below) and a Holocaust photo exhibit at the downtown library through May 8. For other opportunities check mchekc.org. You owe it to yourself to experience and remember. community opportunities Yom HaShoah Service The 2007 Yom HaShoah service will be held Sunday, April 15, 1:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Campus. Hazzan Henry Rosenblum (see p. 1) will be the featured presenter, offering a short program of Holocaust-related liturgical music. The event is co-sponsored by the JCC, JCRB/AJC and MCHE, with support from local agencies and congregations. www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 off the bima Darfur to Freedom On many a Shabbat morning, you have heard me sing the praises of a Bill Tammeus piece that appeared that morning in the Star. Once again, he has struck a chord that has resonated with me with the piece that he wrote March 3. In the wake of the bizarre life and death of Anna Nicole Smith, he noted that if you Google her name, you will find over 62 million web links. “By contrast, when you Google ‘Darfur’ you get only about 11.4 million.” While he and I both expected a greater disparity (perhaps billions to tens), the fact that Anna Nicole Smith gets more attention than the Sudanese genocide is not surprising. It is, however, a very sad commentary. We must not allow this to continue. It is time to get involved. Pesah is a season whose messages remind us that we were once slaves and that we must do all that we can to insure that those who are still oppressed find freedom and dignity. The “Magid” section of the Hagaddah has several Rabbinic messages depicting our journey from a low point to a high one. By retelling this story each year, we are reminded that others must also share our victory. By adding to that story, we also enable our children to learn the importance of going from slavery to freedom in every generation. You can begin by including the story of the Darfur inhabitants in your Seder. Leave a place at your table for those who cannot enjoy a festival of freedom or even a day of dignity. Contact the Save Darfur Coalition (web site below*) to find out other things that each of us can and must do during the coming year. Write letters to political leaders both in the U.S. and abroad to demonstrate this is a priority for us and should be for them as well. See the enclosed sheet for information on how to contact your political leaders. Make the Seder song’s words also become the words of the residents of the Darfur Region--”we were slaves unto Pharaoh and now we are free”. Wishing you and your family a hag kasher v’sameah. *The Save Darfur Coalition is an alliance of over 175 faith-based, advocacy and humanitarian organizations whose mission is to raise public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of more than two million people in the Darfur region. They need our help to identify such families and, thus, help our many communal institutions (including the synagogues) properly serve this population. Sasone, under the leadership of Director Andria Stokes ([email protected] or 913-206-8152), has devised a survey questionnaire that can be accessed online at www.sasone.org. Please take a few moments to complete this questionnaire. We will also have a limited number of hard copies available at the synagogue office that can be completed and returned to Sasone at 5801 W.115th St., Suite 201, OP,KS 66211. We thank you in advance. Question: Does matzah have a required shape? No. Until the advent of the matzah-baking machine, most matzah was round. This practice derived from Exodus 12:39, which required the eating of uggot matzot. In Hebrew, the word uggot means “cakes,” but it has an additional meaning of “circles.” Thus, most Jews baked matzah according to this linguistic interpretation. Modern technology dictated a square shape for matzah, since the early machines could not be tooled for circular cakes. There is, however, no prescribed shape for matzah, and most Jews today consume either the round or square variety. It’s time to begin watching our caterpillar straight talk Pesah is my favorite holiday. There is no counting calories or “points.” But seriously, everything about the holiday reminds me of the many blessings I enjoy living in a free society. I have freedom from fear of edicts from the authorities and freedom from fear of the police. I have freedom to vote. I am free economically, too. I can work for whom I choose. I can buy the shirt, car and house I choose. Of course, I am also free to starve or be homeless if I choose. April 2007 Yet with freedom comes responsibility. Freedom to choose what I buy means some businesses will fail and some people will be left jobless. So I have a responsibility to vote to make sure there are unemployment and other benefits to carry people over hard times. And my freedoms are not unlimited. I have a responsibility to make sure that when I exercise my freedom it does not hurt others. I am not free to yell “Fire” in a crowded theater. Religious freedom comes with responsibilities, too. A religious organization, like Beth Shalom, cannot exist out of thin air. It takes people to make it a reality. I have a responsibility to help make my congregation what it needs to be. You do too. I urge you to exercise your freedom and help build the congregation you want. Join a committee. Help plan an event. Lend your expertise in some way, any way, large or small. Let us know how you can help. Freedom to choose means little when there are no good choices. Perhaps the most important is religious freedom. I can worship as I choose and not be persecuted for it. As always, I appreciate your feedback. Not here. In fact, here we have choices in congregations. I can attend where I choose. I am free to join wherever I Joel Krichiver choose. I can choose to not join, too.
