Create an Instrument
The purpose of this document is to get you started with the INCA Instrument Integration
Development Kit in an efficient way. It provides information on how to install the SDK on
your system and shows how to create a new instrument.
For the description of the implementation, please refer to the Tutorial document.
1.1
Install the Etas Instrument Integration SDK
To use the Instrument Integration Development Kit you need Visual Studio 2008 or Visual
Studio 2008 Express. Furthermore, you need INCA v7.0 and the INCA Instrument
Integration SDK.
You have to install the programs in the following order
1. Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Studio 2008 Express
2. INCA V7.0
3. INCA Instrument Integration SDK
1.2
Create a new Instrument
The first step to your own instrument is to create a new Project in Visual Studio.
To create a new project
! Open Visual Studio
! Select File " New
" Project
! Select Visual C# "
ETAS " INCA
Custom
Instrument
! Click OK.
! Run through the
Wizard and configure
the project settings.
After you have finished the wizard, Visual Studio
creates a complete Visual Studio Project
containing all files you need to create the
instrument.
If you use Visual Studio Express, you will not see the "INCA Custom Instrument" project
template, see step 3 above. You need to copy the file "<ETAS>\INCA Instruments
Integration SDK 1.0\VS2008Template\INCA Custom Instrument.zip" to the following
location: "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\Visual Studio
2008\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#" and restart Visual Studio Express.
You will then see the "INCA Custom Instrument" project template in "File " New Project".
Note
Do not extract the file, just copy the zip-file.

components are located in the Visual Studio toolbox.
To change the Instrument layout
! Choose your windows
form and drag it to the
instrument UI.
! Save Layout
You can find Information about the implementation in the tutorial.
1.4
Integrate the instrument in INCA
To integrate the Instrument in INCA
! Close INCA.
! Select Build -> Build Solution or press F7 in Visual Studio.
After you have built the solution, Visual Studio copies the solution automatically into the
INCA plug-in folder located at “C:\EtasData\INCA7.0\Instruments”.
! Restart INCA.
Now you can see your instrument in the “Variable Selection Dialog” in the Experiment
Environment. There is a new Icon in the toolbar at the top of the window and you can
choose your instrument from the context menu in the widget tree.
You can find further information about the Instrument Integration Development Kit in the
