The Battle of The Somme The Battle of The Somme, fought in Northern France, was one of the bloodiest of World War One. For five months the British and French armies fought the Germans in a brutal battle of attrition on a 15 mile front. The aims of the battle were to relieve the French army fighting at Verdun and to weaken the German army. However, the Allies were able to break through German lines. In total, there were over one million dead and wounded on all sides. Elias Year 6 A Prayer Almighty Father, Please remember all the soldiers who died in that awful conflict 100 years ago. Continue to console and bless the families of all those who died. We remember at this time their courage and bravery. As we remember them today we pray for all British soldiers and soldiers around the world who take such risks in fighting in their countries. May you continue to bless our country and continue to rest their gentle souls in peace. Amen By Joelle. Y6
