And there should be more advertised speciafs at reduced prices in the coming week*. Let me review the tuna situation. Concern hasdeveloped in. recent years about the number of porpoises killed incidental to fishing yellowfin tuna [yellowfin accounts for much of the chunky light meat tuna]. An unexplainable phenom. enon associated with yellowfin is that they swim and frolic with porpoise. Because of this, fishermen have used the porpoise to spot tuna. When nets are dropped in the water for the catch, many porpoise are captured and killed by .suffocation. Certain species were in danger of becoming extinct. During 1976 a quota of porpoise permitted to ' be killed was set by the-U.S. government. By late October, industry reachod the quota ana was forced to cease fishing. There was no further fishing for the yellowfin by U.S. fleets until May of 1977. Since peak fishing is normally between January and May, thedomestic supply was drasti cally cut. Imports increased substantially, but were of courso more costly and cduld not begin to fill the gap. Prices rose; demand dropped. Congress is now considering kill limits on "a three-year basis Instead of the year-to-year^ uncertainty. New fishing techniques have already reduced the number of porpoises killed in ach catch, and will reduce themt-even more as they become widespread. Research may lead to a fuller understanding of the bond between the porpoise and yellowfin,'and that in tdrn may permit better refinement of fishing methods.
