►December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white
passenger on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa was charged with disorderly conduct.
►December 5, 1955, Rosa Parks was convicted and fined in the Montgomery courts for
refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. This action led to an eleven month bus
boycott. Desegregation on the city bus system in Montgomery, Alabama was the outcome.
Today, we celebrate freedom that allows all people regardless of race, national origin, sex,
gender or sexual preference to, not only ride public transit, but to also choose where they want
to sit.
