• What stops you from studying?
• Where is most of your time spent?
• Where do you need to spend more time?

1. Plan
“In preparing for battle I have always found
that plans are useless …
but planning is indispensible.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower
(34th President of USA, 1953-61)

2. Knowing yourself
• Do you know which hours of the day you are
more productive?
• Do you do your most important/difficult tasks
in those hours?
• What motivates you?
– Do you like to work steadily towards a goal?
– Are you motivated by the pressure of a deadline?
Try working in short bursts …

3. Setting goals: ‘drill-down’
Ask yourself,
“In order for that to happen what
has to happen”

3. Setting goals: long, medium, short
Ask yourself,
‘What work have I done for my module/
essay/ dissertation/ exam etc. and what
do I need to do in the long, medium and
short term?’
4. Prioritise
Ask yourself,
‘What needs to be done Now? Soon? Later?
‘What would happen if I didn’t do this Today?
This week? This month? At all?

5. Scheduling
Remember …
• ‘Good judgement comes from experience,
experience comes from bad judgement’
• 5 – 30 – 60
“Human lifetime is less than 1,000
months. For only one third of
these 1,000 months will you have
time for serious thinking, serious
loving and serious acting – that
gives you only 300 months.”
A. C. Grayling

When you leave here ...
• Have I set goals for what I want to achieve in my life?
• Do I have short term objectives, say for the next 3-6 months?
• Have I done anything today that will go towards me attaining
my goals?
• Do I know precisely what I want to accomplish next week?
• Do I know which hours of the day I am more productive?
• Do I do my most important/difficult tasks in those hours?
• Do I prioritise by the importance rather than the urgency of
the task?
• Is my travelling time to and from work used constructively?
• Do I allot enough time for planning my work?
