POPULATION DEMOGRAPHICS and PYRAMID LAB
Biology JB16rev
A population pyramid is a graphical illustration that shows the distribution of age groups in
a population (typically that of a country or region of the world). If it forms the shape of a pyramid, the
population is producing more offspring with each generation (expanding population). If the younger age
groups look more like a column, the population size is stationary or if an inverted pyramid is observed, the
population size is in a period of decreasing.
Population pyramids can be used to predict the needs and demands of a population on the resources that
are used by the population.
Population pyramids are also used in ecology to determine the overall age distribution of a population; an
indication of the reproductive capabilities and likelihood of the continuation of a species.
It typically consists of two back-to-back bar graphs, with the population plotted on the X-axis and age on
the Y-axis, one showing the number of males and one showing females in a particular population in fiveyear age groups.
Males are conventionally shown on the left and females on the right, and they may be measured by raw
number or as a percentage of the total population.
Section 1: PRACTICE.
Examine the population pyramids illustrated below. On the line under the
pyramid indicate if the population is: Expanding, Declining, or Stationary.

You will be looking at a population pyramid from the year 1950. Write your answers on the line
provided.
12. _________________________________________In 1950, at what age group does the
percentage of the World’s population reach 0%?
(Move the cursor over the graph). This
would be the maximum life expectancy in the
World in 1950.
13. _________________________________________In 1950, was the World’s population rate
expanding, declining, or stationary?
14. ________________________________________What percentage of the World’s population
was ages 0-14 in 1950?
15. ________________________________________What was the World Population in 1950?
16. ________________________________________In 2015, at what age group does the
percentage of the World’s population reach 0%?
(Move the cursor over the graph). This
would be the maximum life expectancy in the
world in 2015.
17. _______________________________________In 2015, was the population rate expanding,
declining, or stationary?
18. ______________________________________What percentage of the World’s population
were ages 0-14 in 2015? Add up the ages/genders.
19. _____________________________________ What was the World Population in 2015?
20. _____________________________________ Move back to 1950. Then watch the graph
as you enter the projection model for the
year 2099. What is the projected World
population in 2099?
21. _______________________________________ In 2099, is the projected population rate
expanding, declining, or stationary?
22. _______________________________________Look under the “click for a country” and select
the United States of America. In 1950 was the
USA population rate expanding, declining, or
stationary.
