Level 3 Worksheet

LEVEL THREE PRE-VISIT
Activity:
Below are some animals and plants that form a rain forest food web.
Snakes
Food and Feeding
Squirrel monkeys
All things in a food web can be classified in
one of the following groups:
1 Producers: Plants are called producers
because they are able to use light energy
from the sun to produce food (sugar) from
carbon dioxide and water.
2 Consumers: Animals cannot make their
own food so they must eat plants and/or
other animals. They are called consumers.
There are three groups of consumers.
a) Animals that eat only plants are called
herbivores.
Falcons
Insects
Leaves
a)
Flowers
You need to decide who eats what and remember animals can eat more than one thing. Draw arrows to show what they eat; remember to make sure the arrows are going in the right direction. (The animal doing the eating is at the biggest end of the arrow).
b) Which items in this food web are producers and which
are consumers?
b) Animals that eat other animals are
called carnivores.
c) Animals and people who eat
both animals and plants are called
omnivores.
3 Then there are decomposers (bacteria
and fungi) which feed on decaying matter.
c) What would happen if a link in the web was removed?
