Distinguished Eagle Scout Award Presented to Robert Bruner!
Robert Bruner is the fourth Stonewall Jackson Area
Council member to receive this prestigious award on
September 30 at the King Family Vineyards. Bob is
seated above in the center surrounded by 43 Eagle
Scouts who attended the event. Over 125 were in
attendance that evening to celebrate this occasion.
This award is granted to Eagle Scouts who, after 25
years, have distinguished themselves in their life work
and who have shared their talents with their
communities on a voluntary basis.
Bob now joins SJAC fellow Distinguished Eagle
Scouts—Doc Miller, Ken Wallenborn and Edgar
Shannon (deceased). Distinguished Eagle Scouts who
reside in our council are—Thomas MacAvoy, Gen. J.
H. Binford Peay, III, and Gordon Smyth.
As a tribute to Bob, SJAC has created a Camp
Scholarship fund in his honor. Needy Scouts who
cannot afford to attend Camp Shenandoah will be
eligible on an annual basis.

Helping Hands Needed!
From the Scout Executive
I cannot believe that Fall is already here!
Join Scouting Nights are well underway
as our Packs, Troops, Crews and Posts
are recruiting new members to Scouting.
I know our Pack 81 in Crimora/
Waynesboro has already recruited nine
new Scouts this year!
I hope your unit has taken advantage of
www.beascout.org and loaded all your
unit information. It is really cool to enter
an address and see all the local Google
Map Pins pop up with unit information
about local Scouting. This is a great
feature when so many of our parents use
the internet to find their information, not
the phonebook anymore! If you need
help, you can go to http://
www.scouting.org/volunteer and click the
BeAScout tab on the right or call Pat
Sipe, Council Registrar, she can help get
you set up at 540-943-6675 or
[email protected].
I want to thank Cindy Zollman and her
team of 22 volunteers who made Cub
Fun Day on September 17 a success!
247 Cub Scouts and 352 family
member’s participated in this great event.
Highlights include a monkey bridge,
water bottle rockets, Golden Eagle
demonstration, animal teeth
demonstration (which included several
rattle snakes!), BB gun, archery,
pinewood derby race, Day Camp
demonstration, corn hole, fishing,
smores, first aid, OA and a fully stock
Trading Post! This was a great event of
our new Scouts who just joined Scouting.
Also, six of our packs camped out
Saturday night to make this a great
weekend! Thanks to everyone who
made this event possible.
I am excited to say that I have been
accepted into the Leadership
Charlottesville Program this fall. I am
one of 40 individuals who will be
spending the next nine weeks learning
more about Albemarle County and
Charlottesville. Purpose is twofold, first
to learn more our communities and
second to participate in a group project to
help improve the community. I continue
to be an Ambassador for the Greater
Augusta County Chamber as I work with
local businesses who are members of
the chamber and help them benefit from
all the chamber programs.
Lastly, I hope to see everyone at our 11th
Annual Fall Harvest Dinner and Auction
on November 4 at the Best Western
Conference Center in Waynesboro. Our
committee is working hard to get some
great items donated as well as securing
sponsorships. If you have any items for
our auction or want to attend, please
contact Allen Daughtrey 540-943-6675.
Thanks again for all that you do for
Scouting. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to call me at 540943-6675.
I hope to meet you on the trail.
Yours in Scouting.
Jim Milham, Scout Executive
P.S. Please keep the Eagle Court of
Honor invitations coming! I know I
cannot make all of them, but I really
enjoy meeting our new Eagle Scouts and
our next generation of leaders. Just
send them to the Council Office.
The staff at the office
is always looking for a
few volunteers to help
with mailings and
general office help. If
you can spare the
time, please let us
know! Please email
Allen Daughtrey at

with the days and times you are
available and a good contact
number. Thank you for your
support!

From the Camp Shenandoah Campfire Ring
The tents are stored for the winter and the program materials
have been put away for another year following an
outstanding summer of camping and high adventure at
Camp Shenandoah. In addition to first rate instruction and
programming this year we launched the unique ―Shenandoah
High Adventure Zone‖ aka SHAZ on Friday afternoons.
The program provided a mix of fantastic activities which
troops could choose from to meet their individual need for
fun and excitement. These included ―specialty‖
merit badges such as Archeology at Monticello,
Pottery, and Animal Husbandry; merit badges
typically not offered in most summer camp
settings. There were also off-site trips
including, Caving, Climbing, Whitewater
Rafting, Elliot Knob Hike and Whitewater
Canoeing. During the afternoon the Waterfront
Staff put on “Aquapalooza” where troops
competed in such events as ―SEAL Team X:
Behind Enemy Lines‖, ―Hydrosplat‖, ―Kayak
Tractor Pull‖ and the refreshing ―Frozen Tee
Shirt Contest‖.
Apart from all the outstanding programming at Camp
Shenandoah this summer one thing continued to stand out,
week after week, as remarkable. Consistently the
Scoutmasters and Scouts commented on the skilled,
dedicated and caring Staff who worked long hours to
provide personal attention to their needs to help the Scouts
and their troops prosper and have a great summer camp
experience. In recognition of this the Camping Committee
awarded Johanna Shiraki the Camp Shenandoah
Camp Shenandoah Wish List
Listed below are a few things that are on our wish list to help make Camp
Shenandoah better! If you can help in any way, please contact the Camp
Ranger, Harrison Hankins at [email protected] or on his cell
(804) 986-9932.
―Scoutmaster’s Choice, Staff Member of the Year‖.
Congratulations to Joanna and all the other Staffers who
served this summer. The Camping Committee also wishes
to thanks Scott Wootten for his great first year as Camp
Director and the leadership he demonstrated throughout the
summer. Also, thanks go to Dee Schartiger, Council
Program Director and Harrison Hankins, Ranger, for their
constant support of Scott and the camp throughout the
summer.
This year marked the first ―Cub Resident Camp‖
at Camp Shenandoah and in the footsteps of the
well-established and successful ―Webelos
Resident Camp‖. The program, albeit starting
small, was a great success with the Cubs and
their parents fully enjoying the Camp
Shenandoah experience and ready to return next
year to an expanded program fully of Cub
orientated activities.
Next summer we will continue our goal of meeting the
individual needs of your unit whether it be Cubs, Webelos,
Scouts or Venturers at Camp Shenandoah by providing
personal programming and service to your units by a skilled,
dedicated Staff. Look for the new Leader’s Guide on the
website by early October. Hold a Site forms are available
NOW! Don’t delay in getting in on all the excitement to be
found next year at Camp Shenandoah, your council’s
―Classical Scout Camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains‖.

Ranger’s Corner
Fellow Scouters,
As the new ranger for Camp Shenandoah I stepped in to this
job uncertain as to what to expect. I have been greeted with open
arms and for that I am incredibly appreciative. Over the course of
early spring and summer I asked for many donations and for much
help with work projects around the camp. You have constantly
impressed me with your willingness to help out. Again I am very
appreciative for all that you have done. I want to tell you about
some of the new and exciting things that have been done around
the camp this year and to extend an invitation to anyone with ideas
of how else we can improve the camp property. The thing that
stands out in my mind immediately when I think of changes around
the camp is the new woodworking area in the maintenance shop.
Thanks to donations of time and money we now have a fully
functioning wood shop where we can get down to business and
start on many other projects around the property. This area would
not have been possible had it not been for the volunteer hours that
all of you put in to help clean up and organize. We now have
gates up at camp which are vital in limiting the camp traffic and
keeping our roads in good condition. Again this would not have
been possible had it not been for volunteers. The trading post was
finished just in time for camp and the area around it was mulched
and cleaned up by youth throughout the summer camp season.
One of the things that I think everyone should be very proud of is
2011 Fall Harvest and

their cleanliness

year. Your
ownership of this
camp is
extraordinary and I
hope that it
continues for years
to come. I thank all
of you for your
efforts this year
and again invite you to come out and help however possible. If
you would like to adopt a campsite or even an area of camp to
keep clean and improve please let us know. Every little bit that
you do makes camping more enjoyable for your troop and every
other troop that uses this facility. If you would like to help out more
please email me and we can set up a time for you or your troop/
crew to come out and lend a hand. Thanks again for everything
and I look forward to continued improvement of Camp
Shenandoah.

2011 Popcorn/Peanuts Sale
All four districts had exciting and enthusiastic Kick-off training events – thanks to Jeff Obenschain and
Michael Dunagan. A power point presentation was shown, changes in the product and campaign
structure were shared and each unit left armed with the tools to hold dynamic kick-off events in their
district. Thanks to Trails’ End for their marketing support to help us provide more incentives like the
iPad’s won by Sharon Mack, Pack 174 - Monticello District and Michael Roche’, Pack 344 – Valley
District.

Commissioner’s Corner
Dear Scouters,
I cannot believe the summer is already over, but it was a great year for Camp Shenandoah! Our enthusiastic summer camp staff did an
outstanding job serving over 1,400 Scouts from SJAC units and out-of-council units who attend because of our excellent staff and
outstanding program. If your unit did not go to Camp Shenandoah this summer, please make every effort to attend and support our Camp,
and Scouting in our Council, next year.
I am proud to report that our council continues to be reaching the Gold level of Journey To Excellence. I believe that is due to our
many excellent and committed volunteers who work hard at delivering a quality program. I am also proud to announce that SJAC leads
the Nation in units visited and recorded into the Unit Tracking Visitation System…that’s right; we are number one out of 299 Councils!
Jim Milham and I will be visiting the Southern Board meeting in October to meet with other Council Commissioners to share our success.
Believe me, our success lies in our District and Unit Commissioners who are taking the time to visit, mentor and assist our units.
As we look forward to a Fall full of Scouting activity. There are Camporees, Venturing MOB, training events, University of Scouting;
plenty of great opportunities to see Scouting in action. Just as important are our Fall Membership Roundup now in full swing. The
recruiting effort is crucial to the vitality of our program. We have the best youth leadership program in the World, but it only benefits the
boys we get into the program. Make every effort to assist in introducing new boys to Scouting.
Fall is also the time that our boys are selling popcorn and peanuts. Money from these sales provides significant, and much needed,
financial support to the Council and insures that our program remains at a high level. Please give this fund raising activity your full
support. Our unit Commissioners are willing to assist their units in any and all of the programs mentioned above. Commissioners are a
valuable source of information and guidance. Please allow them to help you. I am always interested in new ideas to make our
Commissioners more useful to unit leaders. If you have an idea, please contact me directly. I welcome your constructive comments.
Lastly, I am pleased to report that we have 41 Woodbadge participants in this year course. My staff has worked hard at preparing for
this mountain top training experience and I am thrilled to know that these participants will be leaning valuable leadership training and then
working their ticket to improve Scouting in their community. Thanks to my staff for all the long hours and hard work to prepare for this
couse!
Have a great Fall and I will see you along the trail!

Announcing New Camp Use Policy, Camp Master
Program and the Camp Shenandoah Year Round
Camper Award
Camp Use Policy. Camp Shenandoah represents a beloved
resource for our council and we want our units to enjoy the
property and its facilities year-round. In order to help units best
access Camp Shenandoah and protect it for generations to come
the Camping Committee has revised the Camp Use Policy. All
units which wish to use camp property should read the new
policy which now requires scheduling use of camp through the
camp office as well as fees associated with camp use. The Camp
Use Policy can be found at: www.bsa-sjac.org/cms/camp-usepolicy.html. All units must be scheduled through the council
office prior to arrival at camp. Units are advised to plan ahead to
ensure space at camp as well as to take advantage of the new
Camp Master Program.

Saddlebags Goes High-tech with
Constant Contact!
Starting this fall, we will begin to transition from a paper newsletter to an online newsletter. Our main
goal is to provide more accurate and timely information to our leaders in the Stonewall Jackson Area
Council. We will be using Constant Contact which will give you the flexibility to select what type of email
newsletters you want to receive. Also, we will start emailing our newsletters every other month starting in
September with the goal to email monthly in 2012.
Many other Councils and non-profits across the country have made this
transition with great success. We believe that embracing social media will
help spread the word of Scouting and this is the first step in our Marketing
Plan.
What do we need from you? We need you to sign-up by going to – You
can opt out of the online newsletter to receive a paper copy by contacting

Roundtable Reminders!!!
Please have important upcoming Roundtables on
your calendar. November ―RT‖ will be a joint
meeting for all leaders and will be devoted to the
important Webelos to Scout Transition. More than
just paperwork review, we want you to invite
Webelos den leaders and Webelos SCOUTS to this
Roundtable so they learn more about crossing over.
This is the best opportunity for Scouts, parents and
Cub leaders to talk with troop leaders about moving
up to Boy Scouts. November RT is Thursday,
November 3 at 7PM.
December Roundtable is the place for you to pick up
your Recharter packet (it’s that time already!). All
units are asked to utilize Internet Rechartering and
complete prior to turn-in session on February 4,
2012. It is critical your unit pick-up the Recharter
packet at December RT! Our district goal is 100%
complete by February 4 and we can do it with your
help. December Roundtable is Thursday, December
1 at 7PM.
As always, Roundtable is at First Baptist Church on
Park Street in Charlottesville. Please join us; it’s the
best way to stay updated, meet fellow Scouters and
get a heads-up on new programs and ideas.
Earthquake Update
Louisa County and the surrounding area continue
attempting to recover after the August 23
earthquake. Needless to say, so many families and
(434)970-3127
(540)379-5518
(434)964-0880
buildings have been affected as has our recruiting
efforts. The good news is our packs and troops all
have meeting locations and we’ve resumed active
Louisa County H.S. damage
recruitment. Our Cub Scout membership totals have
been adversely affected and we remain behind last
year’s Cub totals. But, we have great packs and
trooops and are very optimistic we can close the
gap! Monticello has promoted several McDonalds
Cub Scout parties and we are running a Join Cub
Scouting ad on Facebook. As we close in on the
end of the year it is important we all work together in
inviting as many boys to join as possible. Despite
the earthquake and dozens of minor aftershocks,
boys deserve an invitation to join in the fun of Cub
Scouting in Monticello District!
Get the Credit You Deserve!
The new Journey to Excellence standards place
renewed emphasis on community service. All units
are asked to record their service hours online prior
to the end of the year. Your unit earns up to 200
―JTE‖ points for completing service projects and
entering the hours on the Journey to Excellence
website. Remember, your unit only earns points and
recognition for projects entered on the website! And,
yes, Scouting for Food as well as Eagle Service
Projects count towards your totals! Virtually every
pack, troop, team and crew in Monticello does
service projects, yet fewer than ten have been
submitted to the JTE website. So, get those points
you’ve probably already earned and go for the gold!
Visit SJAC Online, click Resources, and then click
Journey to Excellence. You’ll need a Unit ID
number, available at Roundtables. Or, if you want to
start right away, send an email to Sr. District
Executive Scott Lancey at [email protected].
While you’re at the JTE webpage, be sure to check
out the other tools available to help you go for the
gold!
Family FOS Planning Begins

the calendar year. Susan will be at the upcoming
Fall Roundtables to schedule a date for each unit. If
you have date already selected, please contact
Susan at 434-973-7539 or e-mail at
[email protected]. Thank you to all the unit leaders
for their past support and efforts to aid the loyal
team of presenters.
Susan is also looking for a few good people who are
willing to do a FOS presentation to their own unit or
want to branch out and see other units and do their
presentations or both.Your help is most appreciated!
Peanuts and Popcorn Important Dates
Lots of great comments so far about this year’s
popcorn/peanut sale! The new product mix and
prizes have kept the enthusiasm going! Here are the
important remaining dates to remember:
Oct. 26: All unit orders must be submitted to
Scott Desmond.
Nov. 18: Popcorn & Peanuts pick-up day.
Dec. 3: Full payment to Service Center.
Trail’s End online orders have also been a hit! Even
if your unit is not selling locally, you can accept
online orders and get paid for doing so! Contact
Scott Desmond at 434-242-1538.
District Meetings Move
Effective October, 2011 the District Committee
voted to move meetings to the IHOP meeting room
at Zion Crossing. The montly District
Commissioners meeting moves to the same
location. October meetings will be the fourth
Thursday. November and December meetings will
be the third Wednesday. Beginning in January,
meetings will be on the fourth Thursday. See the
online Monticello district calendar for details.
Scouts Participate in 9/11 Anniversary
Monticello District Scouts played a very prominent
role in this year’s 10th Anniversary Commemoration
at the Charlottesville Pavilion. Eagle Scouts opened
the ceremony by marching in and presenting colors
on stage. Cubs, Webelos and Scouts handed out
programs, flags and lapel pins. The Pavilion was
packed for the event that was simulcast on local TV.
Much more than positive publicity, our participation
showed the community who we are and what
Scouting is all about. Thank you to all who
participated in this important and impressive
ceremony.

Keep Those Cubs Coming!
School Night may be over but our fall
recruitment campaign remains strong! It’s
easy for parents to miss our School Night
events so be sure to continue inviting new
youth into your Pack. Boys and parents
alike are often surprised when we tell them
Cub Scouting is a year round and so are
the opportunities to join! Be sure to remind
your Cubs that they can win a iPod Touch
or a iPad by recruiting a friend to join their
pack, this is also open to all other units as
well (Boy Scouts and Venturing)! Print off
the info flyer and entry form at SJAC
Online. Ask your Church to include a
recruitment message in the Sunday bulletin
(we’ll provide the flyer for you). The ways
to increase membership are limitless and
so are the rewards. Scouts who sign up a
friend get instant recognition with the
awesome Recruiter patch! The BeAScout
yard signs are designed for use beyond
School Night and we suggest you keep
them out through Thanksgiving. If you
relocate them every couple of weeks, you’ll
see results! If you’re looking for additional
ways to recruit new youth and adults, be
sure to attend Roundtable. More help is
available by contacting Tonja Gardiner,
Membership Chair at 540-691-5570 or
Martin Clemmer, District Executive.
Scouting for Food
Earn service hours, help your community
and ―brag‖ on the national Good Turn For
America web site. Contributions to the
Scouting for Food campaign will be
distributed to the food banks, pantries, and
kitchens throughout Alleghany, Bath and
Rockbridge counties where the collections
are made to help these providers
meet the needs of our hungry neighbors.
Scouting for Food bags will be distributed
at October Roundtable. Please distribute
bags on October 22 and return to pick
up filled bags on October 29. Questions
can be directed to Martin at 540-290-1384.
Scouts earn service hours and your unit’s
total should be reported to the GTFA web
site; contact Martin Clemmer, DE, for
information.
Popcorn and Peanuts Update
Popcorn and peanut sales are well
underway. Our turn-in date of October 25
is approaching fast, so you’ll want to
remind everyone to keep selling!
Successful units talk to youth about the
sale every week! Urge them to ―fill-up‖ their
form and win a prize. Remind them if they
are getting close to $600 to keep selling
and they’ll be in the ―$600 Sellers Club‖,
get their own Zing Ring! Unit commissions
have been enhanced this year so you can
earn even more money while the prize
categories are easier than ever to keep
your Scouts enthused! And in less than 10
minutes, any Scout can set up his own
online sales page and invite family and
friends to purchase online! Selling online is
incredibly easy: Scouts and units earn
commission without handling product or
money. Visit the SJAC Online Popcorn/
Peanut page for the easy steps to set up a
popcorn online account. ―Operation
Popcorn‖ is in full swing, so don’t miss this
opportunity to increase sales. We’ve

Roundtable Reminder…
Haven’t been to Roundtable in a while?
The objective of Roundtables is to give
leaders program ideas; information on
policy, events, and training opportunities;
and an opportunity to share experiences
and enjoy fun and fellowship with other
Scouters and leaders. One huge way
Roundtable can help you is by inviting new
Den Leaders or Assistant Scoutmasters
and your SPL to attend. Each month they’ll
get great ideas for troop meetings and
outings while Cub leaders discuss (and
do!) suggestions for making next month’s
pack meeting even more fun. Please join
your fellow Scouters for Southern District’s
monthly Roundtable.

Do Your Good Turn
It’s time once again for our annual
―Scouting for Food‖, a coordinated
effort for area scouts, families and
leaders to help support the Blue Ridge
Area Food Bank and local church food
pantries by placing food collection
bags on front doors in area
neighborhoods. Bags will be
distributed on Saturday, October 22,
2011, and then collected and turned
into the Food Bank on the following
Saturday, October 29, 2011. To
reserve your collection area, please
attend October Roundtable or contact
Andrew Kester (540-448-3677). In
2010 the Valley District collected over
21,000 lbs of food for needy families.
Our goal is to collect more this year to
have an even greater impact on our
community. Please plan on your unit
participating – area families need your
help and support!

POPCORN AND PEANUTS….
Popcorn and Peanut sales have kicked
off and scouts are now out selling like
crazy to help raise money for their
units. Renee Gill is again serving as
the Valley District Popcorn Chairman
this year (540-448-3975 or e-mail
[email protected]). Final
orders are to be turned in to Renee by
Tuesday October 25, 2011 and the
final distribution of orders to the units
will be held on Friday, November 18,
2011 at the Blue Ridge Area Food
Bank. Pick-up times will be
determined when turn in your order.
If you have any questions, please
contact Renee. If you need additional
forms, they can be picked up at the
Council Office in Waynesboro or found
on-line on the newly revised Council
website: www.bsa-sjac.org
Recharter Time is Almost Here…
Have you had trouble rechartering in
the past? Do you have a new
individual handling recharter this year?
Are you wondering what recharter is?
Well help is here to make the process
smooth and easy. A recharter
informational meeting will be held on
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 7:00
pm in the Waynesboro Council Office.
We will cover the entire unit recharter
process including how to use the
simple ―Internet Rechartering Process‖
which allows you to do the paperwork
on-line in a streamlined manner.
Recharter packets will be distributed
informational meeting and at the
November 1, 2011 Roundtable
meeting. Please note that recharter
training will not take place at
Roundtable, only at the meeting on
October 26. Recharter can be

process! Recharter paperwork will

Service Center so please plan
accordingly.
Gentlemen start your sleds…
The annual Klondike Derby/Team
Challenge for Boy Scout Troops and
Venture Crews is scheduled for
January 27-29, 2012 at Camp
Shenandoah. This year’s event is
being chaired by Jene Phillips of Valley
District and is a great opportunity for
your scouts to showcase their abilities
in a fun challenging format.
Registration information will be
distributed at Roundtable meetings
and will also be placed on the Council
website. Don’t wait; register early to
participate in this fun and challenging
competition. If you have any
questions or would like to help with
this event please contact Jene at
([email protected]).
It’s Time to Race….
One of the most memorable
highlights of any Cub Scout’s scouting
experience is the annual Pinewood
Derby race where he gets to build his
very own car out of a block of wood,
wheels, axels, and dreams. Make
plans to hold your unit’s pinewood
derby race and then be sure and to
encourage your scouts to participate
in the Valley District Pinewood Derby
Race which will be held on February
18, 2011. This exciting event is open
to all Cub Scouts regardless of where
they placed in their pack race. There
is no pre-registration, just sign up the
day of the event. Registration
information and rules will be
distributed at the December and
January Roundtables.

Fall Recruitment
This fall, we’ve got an amazing
opportunity to add value to young
people’s lives by recruiting them into
the Scouting program. Not only will it
make their lives better, but more new
scouts in your unit will also improve the
vitality of your Pack, Troop or Venture
Crew. We’ve already had several
―Scout Parties‖ and there will be
several more. Many units will be
hosting 2nd and 3rd attempts at
recruitment events this fall. If your
unit doesn’t have a fall recruitment
plan, work with your District Executive
ASAP to create one.
This year, we’ll be flyering the middle
schools advertising the Fall Camporee.
There will be a join scouting signup
location at the event registration table.
This means, bring your friends and
their bikes to the camporee so you can
have a chance to WIN and IPAD!!!
The recruit a friend contest is up and
running! Be sure to attach completed
Recruit A friend contest entries with
every new scout’s application.
Popcorn & Peanuts
This year we’ve got a great campaign
underway for your unit to raise money
through the sales of Trails End Popcorn
and Virginia Diner Peanuts. It is easier
this year than ever before to raise
money for your unit through the online
sale system. This new addition to our
campaign is streamlining the process
and making your jobs easier (no
delivery necessary). Be sure to check
out all the unit and individual benefits
of selling this year. Over 70% of the
sales goes back to Scouting locally!!!
Thanks to our chairman Karl Shaeffer
for doing such a great job this year!

Be sure your unit plans to help the Blue
Ridge Area Food Bank and local food
pantries this fall for our annual food
collection drive. Pick up your unit’s
Scouting for Food Bags and be
reminded of your assigned territory at
October Roundtable on the 11th at First
Presbyterian Church. Most units will
be distributing bags on Saturday
October 22 and picking up bags from
neighborhoods on October 29. Full
bags can be delivered to Martins on Rt.
33 or to a local food pantry. Please
remember to count the number of bags
your unit collects. For questions or to
report bag counts, contact Ken
Halvorsen

Youth Mountain Bike Rides
Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition is
starting a regularly scheduled mountain
bike ride for youth at Hillandale Park in
Harrisonburg every Thursday at 5:30.
Scott Wootten is working with the club
to coordinate this ―chill‖ ride. Youth
riders of all skill levels are encouraged
to attend. This regular ride will likely
morph into a Venturing Crew,
chartered by the Coalition if youth
prove to be interested in a regular
group ride and youth centered club
events. Contact Scott if you have any
questions or want to help!

Klondike Derby
This January, Troop 120 will host the
Klondike Derby at Melrose Caverns in
Linville. This event is going to be
awesome! Come to October and
November Roundtable Meetings for
more information. Don’t miss this
great opportunity to go camping in the
middle of winter with a bunch of
awesome Scouts and Scouters.
