WWI took place mostly in Europe 1914 to 1918, and was known as the “war to end all wars,” however, this was untrue. Ineffective peace treaties at the end of WWI will eventually lead to World War II. 4 MAIN Causes of WWI 1. Militarism - The policy of glorifying military power. - During the early 1900s, there was a competition between European nations to have the largest militaries. - For example, Germany and Great Britain competed for the largest navy. 2. Alliances - European powers distrusted one another. - To protect themselves from being alone, they formed military alliances - Two Alliances formed - Triple Entente: Great Britain, France, Russia - Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy 3. Imperialism - The competition for Empires caused problems in Europe. - Imperialism led to rivalries, mistrust, and anger between European nations. 4. Nationalism - Nationalism is a deep devotion to your nation and the willingness to fight for it. - Nationalism led to competitive and antagonistic rivalries amoung European nations. - Each country wanted to prove its strength.
