Dear Palomares Families,
Palomares Hawks of the Year
Thank you to our school community for attending the January 25 th Board meeting and
showing your support of our school. Congratulations to our Palomares Student Hawk of the
Year, Vanessa P. and to our Parent Hawk of the Year, Mrs. Elda Garcia.
California Gold Ribbon School Honor
I am so proud to announce that Palomares is being recognized as a California Gold Ribbon
School! The California Department of Education is recognizing us for our outstanding
programs and practices in regards to our annual Watershed Science Expo. The California
Gold Ribbon Schools award was created to honor schools while the California Distinguished
Schools Program is on hiatus as California transitions to our new assessment and
accountability systems. Thank you to Ms. Milinkevich who worked with me to write our
application, our wonderful staff and Ms. Sherry Johnson who also provided information to
help us complete our application.
Honesty
Honesty is our character trait for the month. Here are three tips from Psychology Today
about how we can help our children learn honesty:
1. Begin talking to your children (very early) about how much you value honesty in
your family.
2. Model honesty for your children – not only in your own words but in your everyday
actions.
3. Let them know that you put more emphasis on their being honest than on a
consequence for their dishonest behavior.
Super Spellers!
Congratulations to our Palomares Hawks Super Speller School Spelling Bee Participants:
Alfred (4th), Nico (4th), Kaelyn (4th), Anita (5th),Annie (5th) and Ethan (5th)
Congratulations to Sidney (4th) and Amber (5th) for being our top spellers.

Tardies and Absences
We have had a large number of students arriving late to school. When
students arrive to school tardy, they miss out on important beginning of
the day activities and instructional time. Please help our students be
prepared each and every day at school by arriving on time to class.
Students arriving late must come to the school office to receive a tardy
pass.
ABSENCE REPORTING
When reporting an absence, please call 582-4207 and
press 1. Please do not call the 582-4208 number as this is no longer
recording messages. We apologize for any confusion this may have
caused when calling in to report your child’s absence. Thank you for
your immediate attention to this change.
School Start/End Times
Please remember that students are NOT allowed on campus before 7:55 A.M.
every day unless they are with their parent/guardian.
This also applies during rainy weather mornings.
The library will not be opened until 7:55 A.M.
All 1st-5th grade students are required to be picked up at the end of their school
day within 10 minutes of dismissal. All Kinders are to be picked up at 11:40
A.M. daily. Our school does not have after school childcare. Thank you for
your help with this!

Field Trip Drivers, Chaperones & Parent Volunteers
CVUSD has policies in place that all teachers, staff and parents are
required to adhere to; these policies are for your student and other student’s
safety.
- All paperwork for driving on a field trip must be turned in 2 weeks
prior to the scheduled date of the field trip. This paperwork must be
processed and any delays in turning in paperwork place your student’s
class at risk of having the trip cancelled.
- Parents are not allowed to bring siblings to/on a field trip.
- Parents should not deter from the instructions given by the teacher.
- Parents should not make any stops to/or from the field trip.
- If a parent wants to show up at the field trip – you MUST have
permission from teacher (in advance) and Megan’s Law clearance
turned in 2 weeks in advance.
- All of these rules are for the safety of your child. Please do not put
your child’s teacher in an awkward position of having to say
something in front of other parents or students.
- Every parent/guardian who is considering volunteering for any school
activity must have a Megan’s Law form in place. Please don’t wait
until the last minute as paperwork will not be processed.

Box Tops for Education
Visitors On Campus
There are several school fundraisers that you need not
spend any additional money on, including Box Tops for
Education!
Please make sure to sign in on
arrival and sign out on departure at
the main office anytime you come to
school during the day to volunteer in
a classroom or pick up a student. If
you need to drop something off for
your child during the school day,
please drop it off to the main office.
Please do not go directly to the
classroom,
as
it
causes
an
unnecessary disruption. Thank you
for your cooperation.
Please make sure to collect your Box Tops for Education
and return them to the Palomares School Office. We will
be collecting Box Tops through the end of the school
year for additional funding.
What is Box Tops for Education? Please check out the
website, even become a member – this earns our school
cash. Each box top we turn in is worth $0.10!
Palomares Elementary
Palomares provides an education of excellence that instills a passion for life-long learning
while preparing our students for the challenges of tomorrow. Palomares will enhance
students’ self-esteem, help then discover and maximize their individual potential, and
guide each to dignify, appreciate, and respect human diversity.
This year we will be focusing on a monthly character trait. Different classes will also
make a short presentation on the character trait of the month during a Friday Flag
assembly. Thank you for helping reinforce our character traits at home!

Are you Currently Homeless?
Homeless children have access to the education and other services that they need to ensure that they
have an opportunity to meet the same challenging State student academic achievement standards to
which all students are held.
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youth as individuals who lack a fixed,
regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The term includes,
 Children who are:
- sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar
reason;
- living in motels, hotels, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate
accommodations;
- living in emergency or transitional shelters;
- abandoned in hospitals; or
- awaiting foster care placement.
• Children and youth who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not
designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
• Children and youth who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings,
substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.
If you are homeless and need enrollment assistance, contact your school office, or the Castro
Valley Unified School District Homeless Liaison, Leslie Rothwell, at 510-537-3000 ext 1257.
MEDICATION REMINDER
We have had several requests to administer medication to students. Please review the
information below:
In accordance with the California Education Code 49423, students in need of assistance with
prescribed medication during the regular school day must have the following:
• A written statement from the physician.
• A written statement from the parent or guardian.
• A supply of the medication must be sent to the school in a container labeled by the
pharmacist. The label is to include student’s name, doctor’s name, medication’s name and its
dosage. Changes in dosage or time of administration must be verified, in writing, by the
physician.
• This includes all medication available without prescription as well (over the counter) drugs.
Authorization to administer prescribed medication forms are available on the district website.

Counselor Corner:
Tips for talking with your student
Elementary school students have a tough time expressing themselves when you ask them broad questions like,
“How was your day today?” or “What happened at school?” It helps to ask specific yet open-ended questions. As
a busy parent myself, it’s hard to think of new ways to find out what’s going on with my kids and my go-to
questions get a little old halfway through the school year. Here’s a list to help get the conversation going!















Who did you play with at recess?
What was something that made you laugh?
How did you help your teacher?
What was something that made you mad?
What was the hardest rule to follow today for you? For your classmates?
What would your teacher tell me about your work today?
What would your teacher tell me about your behavior today?
What is something you’re looking forward to tomorrow?
What did you write about today?
What is something nice (or mean) that someone said to you today?
What was your favorite thing about today?
Who would you sit by in class if you had a choice?
What new fact did you learn today?
What would you rate your day on a scale of 1-10 and why?
If one of your classmates could be the teacher, who would you want it to be and why?
These are just a few I found online – there are lots more to try out if you need more or want a bigger variety.
Asking our kids about school and how they’re doing is a simple and easy way to show them that you care and are
interested in their lives. It’s also a great way for them to practice communication skills and let’s them know that
you value their education and expect to know what’s going on with them. You strengthen your relationship with
your student as well, which will come in handy when those pre-teen and teen years come around!
