Press Release
Quito’s City Council puts its trust in Schneider Electric to turn
Quito into a Smart City.
Schneider Electric will implement its integrated city management (ICM) platform,
enabling authorities to coordinate and manage all of the city’s mobility-related
aspects.
The Schneider Electric SmartMobility ICM platform will allow local authorities to
gradually add other city services or infrastructures according to their needs.
Quito, May 14, 2013 — Schneider Electric, the global energy management specialist and leader in energy
efficiency, announced today that the company has been awarded the project for implementing a global smart
mobility management platform in Quito by the Metropolitan Public Mobility and Public Works Company
(EPMMOP in its Spanish acronym). The platform will enable integrated management and coordination of the
different aspects involved in city mobility, constituting the technological base for empowering the city of Quito to
become a world-class Smart City.
The project is part of the range of initiatives being developed in the city by Ecuadorian authorities, including the
subway system, road infrastructure improvement, and the new airport, all of which seek to promote a
sustainable city model through enhancement of citizens’ mobility and the highest quality in providing public
services.
Thanks to Schneider Electric’s SmartMobility ICM platform, municipal agents will be able to perform
coordinated, comprehensive management of Ecuador’s capital city traffic, video surveillance system, and
traveler information panels, with the capability to respond rapidly and effectively at all times to the city’s mobility
needs. The solution will also help supervise and monitor the bus network, assisting operators in making
decisions on increasing transit frequency or network capacity to meet citizens’ present or future mobility needs,
all of which will yield enhanced public service quality.
The platform will also provide citizens with real-time information on the city’s mobility status, public
transportation schedules, airport traffic, and incidents or events with a potential impact on traffic flow using
variable message panels and web applications. This information will enable citizens to make better decisions
on when and how to travel, find out about traffic conditions, including incidents which may affect them, such as

road construction, accidents or public transportation changes, in addition to affording easier access to
municipal services should the need arise.
With the aim of addressing the city’s future needs, the platform allows the integration of new services and
additional infrastructures related to both mobility and any other city segment (e.g. water supply network, public
lighting system…). The solution constitutes the first step toward empowering the city of Quito to become a
world-class, cutting-edge Smart City.
In addition, Schneider Electric will implement a pilot system for collecting data on travel times which
incorporates sensors strategically installed along the highway on the access to the Quito airport. The aim is to
audit vehicle-activated wireless network signals in order to gather real-time information on traffic conditions.
This information will provide the frame of reference for optimizing decision-making and management when
building new infrastructures and roadways in connection with the airport.
According to Ignacio González, Executive Vice President of Smart Infrastructure at Schneider Electric: “It is a
source of great pride to our company that the authorities of Quito have once again put their trust in our
specialization and experience. The execution of this new and ambitious project will provide the city’s
administrators with the latest in state-of-the-art technology for global mobility management under a single
interface, while offering citizens information in real time to assist them in their decision-making and, ultimately,
enhance their quality of life.”
