Audubon Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Bed­
ford Audubon Society will be held
on Friday evening. May 13, in the
Bedford Hills Community House
at 8:30. Nicholas Shoumatoff, pres­
ident, has asked that committee
reports be kept at a minimum.
The recommendations of the nom­
inating committee, consisting of
Carl Graves, Donald Slobohm
and Herbert Jacobi, will be pre­
sented to the membership.
The program for this last meet­
ing of the season is of local inter­
est. It will feature Mianus Gorge,
Butler and Westmoreland Sanctu­
aries. A community which can
boast of three sanctuaries is uni­

a motion picture of Mianus Gorge,
a wildlife refuge which has attrac­
ted wide public interest as retreat
for harried city dwellers. This!
wilderness ar,ea, preserved by the i
foresight of a small group of en-'
ergetic citizens, is visited by thou-|
sands of people each year.
Douglas C. Orbison. vice chair­
man of the Butler Sanctuary on
Chestnut Ridge Road, will present
a program to show what can be
done on a well planned 250 acre
preserve. This will show some of
the nature trails and the educa­
tional Use to which they have been
put under trained guidance. But­
ler Sanctuary, like Mianus Gorge,
belongs to nature conservancy.
Westmoreland Sanctuary, which
is directly across the road from
Butler, has a resident director, Eu­
gene Decker, whose Work with
young people is well known. The
sanctuary has 105 acres and in­
cludes Bechtel Lake. Mr. Decker
will show slides of his bird banding and of some of the groups
who enjoy the preserve.
A coffee hour will follow the
meeting which is open to the pub­
lic.
