Rules and Expectations
1. Eligibility: Eligibility is given based on the individual being zoned to the following schools
1. South Gibson County High School
2. Medina Middle School
• Shooter must maintain an academic 80 average to remain on the team.
• The student must also possess a TN Hunter safety certification card.
• Any student suspended out of school (OSS) or assigned to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC)
may not participate in practice, compete, or attend a SGC Shooting Sport activity until the
suspension or time in the ALC has been served completely.
• Any student assigned to in school suspension (ISS) may practice, but may not participate in
competition until the suspension is completed.
• The students must show high moral standards and conduct themselves in such a manner at all times.
• Students showing poor judgment in safety, sportsmanship and/or attitude may become ineligible to
participate.
2. Objective: South Gibson County Shooting Sports (SGCSS) is organized exclusively to provide the
opportunity for youth athletes to experience safe shooting and handling of firearms while competing in
shooting sports. We will strive to emphasize the positive influence shooting sports can have in an individual’s
life while competing at South Gibson County Shooting Sports.
3. Approved/Required Competition and Practice Apparel:
• Competition shooting shirts (competition only)
• Khaki shorts/pants (competition only)
• Hat/Visor (competition or practice)
• Closed toe shoes (competition or practice)

5. The club will meet as necessary during the year to handle business, clean up of the range and any other
matters that need to be addressed.
6. All guns will be unloaded and cased when traveling to and from the trap range in ANY vehicle. Guns and
ammunition are under no circumstances permitted on school property!
7. Unless it is your turn to take the field, all guns will be unloaded and kept on the rack, with the actions open
(when possible).
8. When going to and from the designated shooting fields, all actions will be open. When on the firing line, all
guns will be pointed up, down-range, or resting on a barrel pad with the actions open (when possible).
9. When shooting, eye and hearing protection is required for all team members, coaches, or others who have
been asked or approved by coaches to be standing on or forward of the 27 yard line:
1. In trap ONLY. It is permissible for a shooter to put a shell in the chamber after he/she has shot. The
action of the gun must remain open until it is your turn to shoot. In the case of an Over/Under
shotgun, the gun must remain broken open (barrels open and chambers visible) until it is your turn to
shoot.
2. In trap ONLY. Unless shooting Doubles. Only one round is permitted in the gun at any given time.
3. In skeet ONLY. The only time it is REQUIRED that you have ONE shell in the gun at a time is as
follows:
1. You have an option on your second single target on a station.
2. You have loaded two shells on the start of a station and drop your 1st target and use your 2nd shell

(already in your gun) as your option. In this situation. You will only be allowed to load one shell
to finish out your single remaining target for that pair.
3. You have a miss during a true pair, which requires the use of your option.
During a round, in the event of a gun or equipment malfunction remain facing down range and raise your
hand to indicate a problem. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES turn around unless directed to do so by a
coach. All other squad members will immediately cease, open their guns and unload until correction is made.
If gun club personnel have to enter the trap or skeet houses during a round, all squad members will
immediately cease, open their gun action and unload until correction is made.
Empty shells will not be picked up until the round is completed and guns are placed back on the gun rack.
All athletes must remain at the SGC Shooting Range until all team members have completed their rounds and
the site and club house are cleaned up.
After you are done shooting, your gun will be unloaded and the action open before you leave the firing line.
Guns will be put back on the rack until further instructed. Any exception will require the presence of a
parent/guardian and/or coaching staff:
1. Barrel direction when leaving the line for any Semi-automatic or pump shotgun is to be facing up
toward the sky.
2. Barrel direction when leaving the line for any Over/Under shotgun is to be over the shoulder or being
carried, with the muzzle facing down toward the ground in a forward manner.
First time safety violators may be asked to forfeit their round of shooting and be asked to leave the range. A
second safety violation will result in discipline up to and/or including the permanent dismissal from the team
and the discretion of the coaching and/or range staff.
Minimum 24 hour notice to the head coach is expected when missing practice. Emergencies will not be
counted against team members.
Eye and ear protection are required to be worn by all shooters, coaches, scorers, and any other individuals
forward of the 27 yard line. Hearing protection with a noise reduction rating of at least 25 dB is required.
Hearing protection may NOT be connected to any electronic devices such as mobile phones or music players.
Hearing protection should be such that the shooter can hear range commands.
Range Safety officers will be on hand during each practice. Their responsibilities include:
1. Supervising safe shooting activities.
2. Ensuring all shotguns and ammunition are handled safely at all times.
3. Ensuring proper hearing and eye protection is worn by all shooters.

Revisions and/or additions to these Rules and Expectations may occur as deemed necessary by the coaching
staff.
