Photosynthesis Lesson

Photosynthesis Lesson
Biology students will work in 2 - 4 small teams to design questions for , and then play a Quia
Challenge Board on the topic of Photosynthesis. Their team performance , quality of
construction, and play will enhance their scores on a final Quia Evaluation.
To encourage student ownership and mastery of understanding the process of photo
synthesis.
To develop research, recording, reporting and communications skills through the use of
effective learner-based strategy and technology enhancement
To tie assessment expectations into learner-based lesson strategies so students are working
with questions and information they will later be responsible for.
To promote standardized test building skills which will encourage an awareness of effective
question development and test taking strategies.
To excite students with a fun way of investigating a relatively boring process. Competition
and information accountability become core incentives to learning a challenging subject.
The student will be randomly placed on two to four instructor selected teams.
Photosynthesis Teams
The teams (with instructor assistance) will assign research responsibilities to members of
their team as they use a PowerPoint Presentation as a comprehensive resource.
The student will develop carefully built questions (using a question anatomy guide) that
thoroughly blanket the material necessary to master this process.
The student will rank the quality of question they create from a ___pt question to a ___pt
(Quia Question parameters) question and store it within a section and page their team bank
Bio 8 Energy
on OneNote.

The student will review and compare questions to a Question Rubric and enter instructor
approved questions into a team Quia Challenge Board.
The teams will play the other teams Challenge Board in order to prepare for the Instructor's
Final Challenge Board.
The student will actively participate in verbally responding to Photosynthesis Challenge Board
to earn points for their team.
The student will take a formalized Quia assessment that uses some of the questions that each
student developed.
When students walk in the room a dramatic film of the process of photosynthesis will be
playing showing each aspect of O2 production, and the global impact of inhibited
photosynthesis.
A working knowledge of the basics of the process of photosynthesis.
The PowerPoint could accompany the textbook reading to prepare students for information they
will need to be responsible for.
