Maths Meeting KS1 Oct 2016

Maths Meeting
Key Stage 1
Aims:
To understand new calculation policy
To understand mastery in maths
To know how to help at home
Mastery in Maths
• What is mastery?
High expectations that all children can succeed;
A positive attitude towards learning;
Develop resilience and perseverance;
Learning from mistakes;
No labelling.
Assessment
• No more levels!
• Children now assessed against Age Related
Expectations specific to their year group.
• All teaching/learning will relate these.
Assessed as:
• Working at greater depth
• Working at the expected standard most
children
• Working towards the expected standard
• Not yet working towards the expected
standard
How are assessments made?
• Teacher assessed supported by tests

What is the impact of the new mastery
curriculum?
• All children will have the same learning
objective – but may tackle it in different ways;
• Some children will develop a greater depth of
understanding of that concept (enrichment);
• Others may need more consolidation of the
concept.
Enrichment/Mastery in greater depth
• Emphasis is to remain within the age related expectations but with deeper
understanding
For example:
• Mastery
• Fill in the missing numbers and explain what you notice.
• 23 + _ = 30 33 – _ = 30 43 +_ = 50 53 – 3 =_
• Mastery with greater depth
• Find different possibilities.
• _ + _ = 50
• 50 –_ = _
Addition and Subtraction
National Curriculum Expectations
Y1
•
•
•
•
•
Pupils should be taught to:
read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (−) and equals (=)
signs
represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0
solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial
representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? − 9
Y2
•
•
•
solve problems with addition and subtraction:
– using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities
and measures
– applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
– a two-digit number and 1s
– a two-digit number and 10s
– 2 two-digit numbers
– adding 3 one-digit numbers
Multiplication and division
•
•
•
National Curriculum Expectations
Y1
solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the
answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the
support of the teacher
•
•
Y2
recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication
tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the
multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and
equals (=) signs
solve problems involving multiplication and division, including problems in
contexts
•
•
How are these taught?
•
•
•
•
•
•
Lots of practical activities
Number line work -counting on/back
Arrays for multiplication
Visual/kinaestietic
Calculations referred to as ‘number sentences’
Mental recall of number bonds to 10,12,100 moving
onto timestables
Abacus maths scheme –using interactive screens
Written Methods
• The written methods introduced in Key Stage
2 are now probably the ones you will
remember from school!
How to help at home
• Help with homework which consolidates learning in school - see
teachers if not sure
• Basic times tables/division
• Key number bonds - to 10, 20, 100
• Doubling/halving
• Telling the time
• Counting on/back in different jumps
• Spotting 2D/3D shapes in the environment
• Money – real –life shopping situations
• Weighing – cooking/food packets
• Aim to develop fluency.
