David: Anointed by God We receive God’s anointing (the Spirit) when we acknowledge Christ as King. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16: 7 Connect • When/How do you hear God’s voice most clearly? Grow 1. Read 1 Samuel 16: 1-23. 2. What task is Samuel given by God? What is important about this task? 3. What kind of person is Samuel expecting to be the next anointed king? 4. Discuss the ways that David doesn’t fit the mold of a future king. 5. What criteria does God use to select the future king? 6. How does God begin to prepare David for his kingship? 7. Discuss all the ways Christ didn’t fit people’s expectations of a Messiah. Do you see similarities with David’s story? What does this tell you about God’s character? 8. How did God anoint Christ? (See Matthew 3: 13-17 and Acts 10:38) 9. Read 2 Corinthians 1:20-22. 10. How and why are we anointed? 11. What should God’s anointing look like in our lives?
