CONTRAPTIONS
DAKSH 7 this time, is with a theme of Mahabharatha. The contraptions are based on the
complete happenings in Mahabharatha. Participants here are required to make the
contraptions based on the context that is given to them.
Description:
The contraption should contain at least three among the five modules mentioned below
(more than three will carry bonus). One of the three modules should be at the beginning and
one definitely at end of the contraption. The remaining modules(1 compulsory + extra(if
needed)) can be placed in the middle.
Tasks that display the energy conversions should be in between the modules.
General Rules:
• Maximum of 5 members per team.
• The team should submit an abstract containing a table of all the steps and the
energy conversions involved in each step.
• Images or videos of the contraption can be sent (not compulsory)along with the abstract.
• Participating teams are requested to bring 5 hard copies of the detailed abstract on the
day of event.
• Change of steps is not encouraged after the submission of abstract. Addition of steps is
permitted.
• Two trials are permitted for each team.
• Time interval of 1/2 hour will be given between each trial.
• Failure to start the contraption and use of any explosives will result in disqualification.
• Judges’ decision is final.
• Arena Dimension: 10*8 feet
• Rules and scoring may be subject to changes.
• The contraption modules will have to be made based on the contexts given. The
implementation of the context is left to the complete freedom of the participant. Creativity
is essential.
• Context 1 and Context 5 have to be mandatorily implemented. The rest one mandatory
and the optional modules can be chosen by the participant from the contexts 2, 3, 4.
CONTEXT 1:
Pandavas escape from the house of lac.
The story for the context:
Yudishtara was made the yuvaraja (PRINCE) of Hastinapur. This made Duryodhana jealous
and he planned to kill the Pandavas with the help of his uncle Sakuni. They persuaded them
to attend a grand fair in the town of Varna vat. Duryodahana had a lac palace built for
them, as it burns easily. He had planned that when Pandavas were sleeping in that palace,
one of his men would set it on fire and they would be burnt to death. By the warning of
Vidura, the prime minister, Pandavas came to know about the plot and escaped along with
their mother Kunti, through the tunnel and Duryodhana thought that they had died in fire.
TO BE DONE:
Participants are required to make the contraption based on the storyline given above. The
contraption is left to the creativity of the participant. Five objects(balls) has to enter a
structure and have to escape from it on the destruction by other object.
SCORING:
• Aesthetic appearance of the palace will be judged for 75 points.
• Time from starting to the ending of this module is calculated and points will be awarded
Accordingly.
• Escape of the pandavas from the burning house of lac will be rewarded with 50 points.
• No points will be awarded if either one of the pandava doesn’t come out of the burning
house of lac.
CONTEXT 2:
Arjuna targets an eye of a bird on a tree with an arrow and shoots it exactly.
TO BE DONE:
Participants are required to make the contraption based on the context given above. The
contraption is left to the creativity of the participant but the concept of shooting an object
at a distant height must be clearly depicted.
SPECIFICATIONS:
 The model of bird should be hung at a minimum height of 60cm and 150cm
maximum.
 The distance between the point of release of arrow and the point where the bird is
hung
should be 60cm minimum
 The diameter of the eye should be 10cm. The center should be marked visibly.
 The height from which the arrow is released must be 15cm from the ground,
maximum.
 The arrow may be of any type. Arrows and the model of the bird should be prepared
by
the participant.
SCORING:
 The points will be awarded based on the height of the bird’s eye/object from the
ground and the accuracy of the arrow.




For a height of 60cm, 10 points will be awarded and then for every 3cm increase 5 points
will be awarded.
For shooting at the center of the eye 50 points will be awarded.
For shooting at any point within the eye, other than the center 30 points will be awarded.
No points will be awarded for shooting at any other point outside the eye.
CONTEXT 3:
Duryodhana and Sakuni’s game of gambling with Pandavas
Story:
Sakuni has a magic dice which always shows the number that he thinks in his mind.
To be done:
A number (from 1 to 6) has to be displayed by means of a dice or any other means. An
object has to move as many square boxes (2x2cm) as the number displayed on the dice or
other means.
SCORING:
• If the dice is rolled to display the number, 40 points will be awarded.
• Other methods to display the number will be awarded 10 points.
• The movement of the object for each square box will be awarded 10 points if the number
of squares moved is equal to the number displayed.
• If the number of boxes that the object moves is not equal to the number displayed, 5
points will be awarded for each box.
CONTEXT 4:
Duryodhana’s insult in the Palace of Illusions (mayasabha).
To be done:
In this module, illusions of any kind can be made

CONTEXT 5:
Bhishma’s vast knowledge about the tactical formations.
Story:
Bhishma is said/considered to be most knowledgeable person in mahabhartha when it
comes to war strategies and planning. For his efficient means of planning, arjuna himself
alone couldn’t complete, but krishna had to help him. So participants are required to think
like bhishma and implement any one of following formations.
A few formations mentioned in the epic Mahabharata are listed.
• Krauncha Vyuha: the crane-shaped formation of an army; forces are distributed to form
spanning wing-sides, with a formidable, penetrating centre depicting the crow's head and
break.
• Padma Vyuha or the Chakra Vyuha: a winding, ever-rotating circular formation; considered
impenetrable during the Mahabharata age by all warriors except Arjuna, Bhisma, Karna,
Drona,
Krishna, Pradyumna, Aniruddha and Abhimanyu.
• Sarpa Vyuha: winding snake formation.
• Makara Vyuha: Crocodile Formation
• Sakata Vyuha: Cart Formation
• Shukar Vyuha: Pig Formation
RULE:
The size of the vyuha must fit into a rectangle of 90x80cm maximum.
ENERGY CONVERSION MODULE:
The efficiency of conversion of energies from one form to another is tested in this module.
RULES:
• Starting and ending of the steps are to be clearly mentioned in the abstracts.
• Minimum 8 energy conversions.
• Maximum of three energy conversions per step are allowed (repetition of same steps are
not
allowed).
• Kinetic, potential, vibration, wind, sound, magnetic, electromagnetic, spring potential, etc.
are
all distinct. They are not treated as mechanical energy.
• Reversal steps are also allowed.(step1 --> step2-->step3-->step2-->step1)
• Every reversal should be executed next to the actual step.
• Reversal step should start only after the completion of the step prior to it.
• No two conversions should run in parallel.
• Conversions in ready-made objects as batteries (chemical_electrical), motors
(electrical_kinetic/potential) will not be considered as energy conversions.
• Each step should have a distinct way of energy conversion
NEED OF ANY EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY DURING THE EXECUTION OF THE CONTRAPTION
SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN THE ABSTRACT.
SCORING:
Scoring in this module will be based on the energy of the object that triggers the step
and the product at the end of the step.
Ex:
If a ball is kept on an inclined surface, when triggered it slides along the surface.
Here the initial energy possessed is potential which is converted to kinetic
*If no energy conversion of same type takes place in between the steps which has already
scored in any other step, then 10 points will be awarded for each step.
* If the same type of energy conversions are repeated, 5 points will be deducted for that
step and 5 points will be given for that step as a whole though there are intermediate steps
in it.
Ex:
If the step has light_electrical_kinetic conversion and if light_electrical or
electrical_kinetic is already scored in other step then 5 points will be awarded treating
light_kinetic as a whole step, otherwise 10 points will be awarded.
Based on the energy possessed by the end product, the scoring will be as follows:
*Electrical/electronic energy -05 points
*Chemical energy -25 points
*kinetic, potential, sound, wind, magnetic electromagnetic, others -06 points each
*For every successful completion of the reversal step the points awarded for that specific
step will be doubled.
*For successful completion the module without any reversal steps a bonus of 25 points will
be awarded.
*For the successful completion of the module with one reversal step, 35 points will be
awarded.
*For the successful completion of the module with more than one reversal step a bonus of
50 points will be awarded.
NOTE: THE DEPICTION OF THE THEME “MAHABHARATHA” IN THE CONTRAPTION WILL BE
JUDGED FOR 100 POINTS
