History
History of the region begins in the 8th century BC with the foundation
of Rome, which was at first a monarchy, and then a republic. The
republic gave way to the Empire in the 1st century BC when the first
Roman emperor, Augustus, reorganized the Empire, so that Lazio and
Campania were the Prima Regio. During the war against the Goths
(535-553) the Byzantine Empire reclaimed Lazio for a period, then
had to defend the Adriatic possessions against the Lombards. After
centuries of fighting local lords, the State of the Church gained a total
supremacy on Lazio. In 1870, after the Third War of Independence,
Rome became capital of the Kingdom of Italy.
Nettuno
Nettuno is a town in the province of Rome in the Lazio region. It is

god Neptune. This town, a resort and an agricultural centre, is situated
on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and has population of 40000.
It was founded by the Saracens in the 9th century. Today it is a
popular tourist destination with well preserved old quarter, the
Borgo Medievale and the Sangallo Fort built in the 1500s. Nettuno is
an important centre of pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Maria Goretti.
In the shrine there is a crypt where lie the remains of the saint. The
privately owned Villa Costaguti-Borghese at Nettuno, built in 1648,
