Exhibition ‘Portrait in an Old Interior’

The museum is located inside an eighteenth century architectural monument. The
exhibition provides the opportunity to trace the shift in artistic interior design styles
from the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. The mansion’s five halls include
a portrait room, gentleman’s office, a blue living room, a boudoir, and a dining room.
Furniture, paintings, mirrors, and porcelain fill the house with the spirit of earlier eras.

At the Museum of Fine Arts, Forum participants can see unique Northern icons and wooden
sculptures dating from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries, as well as folk clothing,
embroidery and weaving, wood carving and painting, and artistic metal and ceramic works.
The Museum also displays contemporary Kholmogory bone carvings, an artistic practice that
has survived in the North for over 400 years.

Exhibition: Russian classical art from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries
E.K. Plotnikova Mansion

This exhibition is located in a landmark of late eighteenth to early twentieth century
architecture, a building which is part of the only surviving urban architectural ensemble in
Arkhangelsk, the Shingaryov-Plotnikov Urban Merchants’ Manor.
Paintings by Russian artists are displayed in a suite of great halls with genuine parquet floors,
glazed tile stoves, decorated ceilings, and stucco friezes. See work by Karl Bryullov, Vladimir
Borovikovsky, Fyodor Rokotov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexey Venetsianov, Kirill Lemokh, Ivan
Kramskoi, Mikhail Nesterov, Valentin Serov, and many more outstanding masters of Russian
art.

The Northern Sea Museum

The Northern Sea Museum is located in the historic centre of Arkhangelsk, on Krasnaya
Pristan. It was from here that the city was born as one of the country’s main ports. The
museum is located in the old maritime station building, between two piers: Sobornaya (now
known as Krasnaya) Pier and Seafaring Pier, which has legendary status in the history of
Arctic exploration thanks to famous expeditions by Georgy Sedov, Boris Vilkitsky, and Otto
Schmidt.
The museum’s exhibits tell the whole history of the maritime exploration of the North,
starting with sea journeys to Grumant and Mangazeya and the first Russian shipyard,
established in Solombala by Peter the Great, and continuing through Arctic exploration in the
twentieth century.

A.A. Borisov Museum of Artistic Development of the Arctic

The A.A. Borisov Museum of Artistic Development of the Arctic is the first and only museum
in Russia to provide visitors with an artistic view of the Arctic world, rather than presenting
the Arctic as a place for geographical discoveries and scientific research. The museum
displays paintings by Alexander Borisov, an artist known the world over and an early explorer
of polar themes in visual art. A separate hall is dedicated to the culture of the native peoples
of the Far North. Visitors can also see works by twentieth-century artists who worked in
Arctic conditions. Modern museum technologies and a striking design help to conjure the
unique atmosphere of the Arctic world.

The main attraction in this exhibition is a mammoth calf from the Yamal Peninsula, preserved
in the permafrost. There are no other specimens in the world that remain quite so wellpreserved. Lyuba the young mammoth was found in May 2007 by a reindeer herder named
Yury Khudi on the upper branch of the Yuribey River on the Yamal Peninsula.
A glass enclosure makes this unique exhibit visible from all sides.

Exhibition opening: The Russian North in the history of Arctic exploration

An exhibition of books and illustrations provides a unique opportunity to explore print
publications from the late eighteenth to early twenty-first centuries. Books, periodicals, and
maps that present the history of Arctic seafaring from ancient times to the present day will be
on display. The exhibit will present publications describing the feats of sailors from
Arkhangelsk, as well as courageous ice captains and polar explorers. The books on display
reveal the importance of Arkhangelsk in exploring the Arctic.

Festival: The North rings with Russian voices

Celebratory concert: Arkhangelsk Hospitality Festival award winners and students aged 9 to
27 will display their mastery in two categories, Musical Creativity and Artistic Recitation, as
they present original compositions in traditional styles and arrangements of folk songs from
the Russian Far North.

An evening of organ music entitled the ‘Organ Northern Lights’

A concert by musicians from the Pomorskaya Philharmonic will introduce the audience to one
of the newest organs in the Russian North, built by the German firm Alexander Schuke
Orgelbau. The concert will combine various musical genres, and the organ will be played both
as a solo instrument and within an ensemble, accompanying a variety of other soloists (vocal,
violin, guitar, saxophone, and more).

Arkhangelsk Youth Theatre

A mystery in two acts.
Russian history contains many ‘dark spots’, stories which have been carefully, purposefully
wiped from people’s memories, with heroes who have faded into oblivion. One such story is
the tale of Emperor Ivan VI, the ‘iron mask’ of the Russian state.
This play was long-listed for the Golden Mask national theatre prize in the 2015–2016 season.

Reception hosted by the Governor of Arkhangelsk Region
Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor historical architectural complex

The programme for the reception includes performances by a jazz band, the Northern Folk
Choir, the Khayar folk song and dance ensemble, and a visit to the Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor

One of the oldest museums in Northwest Russia, the Arkhangelsk Local History Museum, is
located in the Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor, an architectural monument from the seventeenth

a museum and cultural centre.

The collection of the Russian North Electronic Regional Studies Library contains a wide
assortment of rare publications from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,
including unique information about the history of Arctic exploration and Arctic scientific and
commercial expeditions. The presentation will introduce readers to the most interesting
documents. These include Mikhail Lomonosov’s Brief Description of Different Journeys in
the Northern Seas and an Indication of a Possible Passage Across the Siberian Ocean to
Eastern India (1847) and a publication by the Hydrographical Department entitled The
Lomonosov Project and the Chichagov Expedition (1854).

Voices of the Arctic

Concert featuring world music group Ayarkhaan (Sakha Republic/Yakutia), folk music
ensemble Zarni Yol (Komi Republic), Ergyron (a state Chukchi-Eskimo song and dance
ensemble from Chukotka Autonomous District), and throat singer Olga Letykai, who will
perform Chukchi and Eskimo songs (Chukotka Autonomous Area).

The State Academic Northern Russian Folk Choir presents a concert programme entitled
‘Come Visit Us Up North’. You will hear Russian folk songs from the ensemble’s repertoire
of perennial favourites drawn from all corners of this immense country and beyond its
borders. Audiences love them for their emotional intensity, beauty, and singability. The
concert programme will also include the choreographed musical presentation ‘UstTsilyomskaya Hill’.

The Khayar folk song and dance ensemble was founded in 1962. Khayar means ‘sun’ in the
Nenets language. The ensemble has performed in many cities in Russia, France, Spain, and
Finland. It was part of the cultural programme for the 12th World Festival of Youth and
Students in Moscow and the Marathon of Russian Regions, which took place as part of the
Cultural Olympiad in Sochi. It represented Nenets Autonomous Area at the Riddu Riđđu
international festival of indigenous peoples in Norway.
