Main purpose of position:
Be the strategic, editorial leader & champion of all Drama content across SABC’s television network, including digital
terrestrial television (DTT), overall responsible for staff, content budget and Drama rollout.
Key Accountabilities:
 Strong, focussed editorial leadership of the Drama Genre for SABC Television Network
 Development and delivery of the Drama strategy, in line with the corporate pillars, channel brand needs and
audience appeal
 Ensuring continuous quality and distinction in line with audience targets & national imperatives.
 Ensure all Drama content is procured in line with SABC’s procurement policies and procedures
 Driving mandate delivery in line with ICASA and the Broadcasting Act
 Line management of the Drama editorial and administrative team
 Responsible for delivering genre rollout as per channels schedule
 Annual joint setting of channel buying plans in collaboration with channels and content management
 Creative and financial sustainability through risk management
 Financial, people and business performance monitoring and reporting
 Develop and drive industry development through procurement and editorial management
 Relationship management with external suppliers and internal SABC support structures
 Diversify Drama programming to reflect the needs, aspirations, values, opinions and ideas of the South African











population
Ensure effective, transparent operational and administrative processes to drive accountability and innovation
Recruit, lead, manage, develop and retain key staff
Develop and execute cutting edge programming to compete in the global arena
Develop a cross-platform Drama acquisition strategy
Drive cross-genre collaboration
Ensure all Drama programmes are commissioned and delivered to meet the network’s scheduling and budgetary
requirements
Handle all BCCSA (Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa) complaints
Provide strategic creative input to Commissioning Editors into the Drama genre’s portfolio of present and future
programming
Ensure Commissioning Editors keep abreast of local and international Drama trends
Ensure staff apply corporate governance
Provide operational and editorial support to all Drama staff and service providers
Required Skills and Experience:
 Leadership experience of inspiring and motivating successful teams
 Submission of a filmography that demonstrates strong production management and leadership credentials with a




proven track-record of delivering editorial excellence
The ability to inspire and instil trust
Proven track-record of delivering innovative Drama content
Extensive expertise and understanding of the genre trends and output
Knowledge, experience and understanding of working in the Drama field











Proven ability to manage a wide range of stake-holder relationships
Financial, strategic and operational experience in the production and procurement of Drama content
Understanding of the SABC’s mandate
Knowledge of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT)
Post matric qualifications and experience
Project management skills
People management skills
Managing relationship and driving team work
Communication skills
A broad understanding of television production and technology
Strong editorial skills within the Drama field and sub-genres (long-form, comedy, docu-drama, melodrama,
political drama etc.)
 High degree of planning, organising and prioritising
 Working under pressure and ability to deliver to deadlines
 Ability to demonstrate a strong understanding of Intellectual Property Management and Third party rights
