** In 2006, after three years of planning and
upon recommendation of a community-wide
Advisory Council, the YWCA’s Board of
Directors approved a capital campaign to raise
$5,000,000 to renovate , remodel and upgrade
the YWCA facility. Fundraising commenced
for the YWCA building a fearless future
capital campaign, and in 10 months, the goal
had been reached and surpassed, with commitments of over $6.8 million. Construction ran
from Summer 2007 – Spring 2008, and a
community Open House was held in September 2008. Generous donors designated funds
over the construction total to a $1 million+
YWCA building a fearless future Building
Endowment which will maintain the facility
and position the YWCA with the flexibility to
meet present and future service requirements.

“A realization that young women needed help in their lives prompted Miss Ida
Stearns to send out a message to the various churches in Kalamazoo to call a
meeting of young women on November 15, 1885, in the chapel of the First
Methodist Episcopal Church. Nine young women attended. The day was
stormy and a meeting was planned for one week later, when an organization
was formed and Miss Stearns was elected president.”
