THE BUGLE A monthly publication of the Brandon Elks Lodge #2383 ALL AMERICAN LODGE 800 Centennial Lodge Dr, Brandon, FL 33510 Phone: 813-685-6469 Fax: 813-643-5652 Volume 16 Issue 2 May 2017 www.brandonelks.org A message from your Exalted Ruler Our first month has passed so quickly - it feels like we just got started and now here we are in May! Our annual Hooked on Fishing not Drugs kids fishing tournament was held on April 22nd. Thank you to Donald and Judy Cornett for another successful event. All of the kids, adults and Elks had a great time. And we can’t forget about Phil Hinkle who was excited to cook on his own grill for the event – Thanks Phil! May is going to be another busy month. The Scholarship Dinner is set for May 7th at 3:00 pm. Please plan on attending. Scholarship chair Teresa Reeves has worked very diligently on the scholarship program. We will also be serving a great Mother’s Day breakfast on May 14th. I’m looking forward to seeing all of our mothers that day. Our next member initiation will be held on Sunday, May 21st at 2:00 PM. Please bring a dish to share and join us in getting to know our newest members. Lastly, the Florida Elks State Convention will be held at the Orlando World Center Marriot May 25th – 28th. Elks State Secretary Carl Seibert is planning on initiating 200 applicants. That should be spectacular. Like I said at the beginning we are going to be busy this month. We could sure use your help with all/any of the upcoming activities. Just step up and volunteer because as you know “Elks Care — Elks Share”. Fraternally yours, Delores Westfall, Exalted Ruler April 2017 This Elk has been involved ever since he became a member of Brandon Lodge #2383. He can be found assisting with the snack bar, for Friday night dinners, helping Rick Weigand in the kitchen and doing anything that is asked of him. I once told him he needed to learn the word ‘no’. We’re so happy he did not learn that word. Thank you for all your hard work, Bob Booker, our April Elk of the Month. Bags of Brotherly Love Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and is looking forward to the end of the first quarter of the year. It seems to go by much faster the older you get. The Bags of Brotherly Love project is gearing up for our next Outreach Clinic which will be held on June 13th at the American Legion Post on Florida Ave. in Tampa. Again we are looking to serve about 200 people at this event. We could really use a few more volunteers this go-around as it is a lot to do with that many homeless individuals. As you may recall in last month’s Bugle, I made mention that we were being given an award by the Salvation Army for our contribution and ongoing efforts in helping to feed the homeless. We received that award at a wonderful banquet and concert on last Friday, April 7th. I must say what an honor to be recognized in such a way. I was left speechless. If you have not seen the award it sits on the shelf next to the coffee maker in the lounge. It is a beautiful cobalt blue star with the Salvation Army Logo on the front. Check it out sometime. We still have raffle tickets for sale for the lottery scratch off tickets. Please help support the Brotherly Love Project by purchasing a few of these. (You never know - you could be a winner). For those interested, our Outreach Clinics are being held the second Tuesday of each month, with the larger Outreach being held each quarter. Again I want to thank everyone who attended the last event and to those who help each month assembling the bags and making the sandwiches. What a gift you bring to the table. Remember, together WE can make a difference. Thank you. Ebert Julie E. Ebert New e! T im Lady of Distinction April 2017 We had our first meeting to kick off the new year and welcomed the newest member Gerry Westfall our new host for the 2017-2018 term. Colleen Harmon was chosen as Lady of Distinction for April to celebrate her endless dedication to the Brandon Ladies Of Elks. Grace Weigand reminded everyone about the upcoming Scholarship Banquet which will be held on Sunday, May 7th. Courageous: Merriam-Webster defines it as ‘having’ or characterized by courage. Some of its synonyms are bold, brave, dauntless, fearless, gutsy, and valiant. All of these words describe this month’s Lady of Distinction. How else could you describe a woman who for two years voluntarily led over 100 women through their BLOE journey? She’s worked tirelessly promoting our purpose of fellowship and friendships. She’s presided over two dozen, some not so short or simple, meetings and represented BLOE at many functions. She also volunteers for Ladies Breakfasts, catering, and other events. You may even catch her working the snack bar for Bingo on a Thursday night. You’d think she’d be a little worn out after two years as our president, but she is on our BLOE board for our new year. We salute our courageous Lady of Distinction for April, Colleen Harmon, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Start your Mother’s Day celebration early by coming to the breakfast on May 14th. Mothers get their breakfast for half price and make sure you buy raffle tickets for the fabulous Mother’s Day Basket full of gifts that would make any mother or lady happy to receive. We are finalizing our group of lucky kids going to the Florida Elks Youth Camp, if you know of a child who would be interested just contact Diane Ferrar. Thanks to Jean Barfield and her crew for cooking up the best spaghetti dinner in Brandon last month. Make sure you mark your calendar for our May 17 th Heavenly Dinner prepared by the BLOE Angels. We will be serving Saintly Mild or Hot Italian Sausage Grinders, Church Potatoes, Stairway to Heaven Cole Slaw and Pineapple Angel Surprise for Dessert. All that for only $8.00 and maybe better your chances to getting into heaven. We are all looking forward to the Memorial Day Picnic on the 29th. Our May Meeting will be starting at 7:00 and we will have a board meeting before that starting at 6:30. During the meeting we will be installing several new members. It’s exciting to see our group grow, we have a great group of ladies who work hard, laugh harder and just have fun. I was totally surprised to say the least. For 7 years I have volunteered with the most fabulous group of ladies in Brandon. We strive to do as much as possible for numerous organizations. But as Mary Lou Schreck said, "we need many helping hands" to get this accomplished.
