A star-studded line up

Media Release
Zurich, August 21, 2008
freestyle.ch from September 26 – 28, 2008 – Europe’s largest freestyle sports event
A star-studded line up
freestyle.ch 2008 will be ablaze from September 26 – 28, 2008 as last season’s reigning stars –
Stephan Maurer (Snowboarding, SUI), Mat Rebeaud (FMX, SUI) and Rodrigo Menezes (Skateboarding, BRA) – light up the starting field. Also sure to set off sparks will be freeski genius,
Candide Thovex (FRA). Thovex will take to the 8 m elongated Big Air Snow Ramp with his crafty
jumps in a race to land one of the hotly contested titles up for grabs at Zurich’s Landiwiese.
One look at freestyle.ch’s starting field says it all – Europe’s largest and most important freestyle sports
event happens right here. Get ready for Zurich’s Landiwiese to turn into a virtual who’s who in freestyle
sports from September 26 – 28 as the best go at in a fight for the «freestyle.champ» and
«crossover.champ» titles. Awaiting audiences are an enlarged Skateboarding Half Pipe and a Big Air Snow
Ramp stretched by 8 m to make a whopping 36 meters. This means more air time for riders and even
bigger and greater awe-inspiring jumps for audiences to admire.
Starting field to be determined by drawing on Thursday
Get ready for a twist to the weekend’s program in the form of a change in contest mode. This year’s
qualification will be divided into two equally judged contests – one on Friday, the other on Saturday.
A drawing on Thursday will determine each day’s rider line-up. Not only will this pump up the sports action
on Friday, but it will also provide each of the 76 invited riders with an equal chance at qualifying
for the Final or even the Super Finals on Sunday as well as a chance to get themselves a juicy slice of the
over 110, 000 US Dollars in prize money.
Will Maurer keep the Scandinavian armada at bay?
Stephan Maurer, «freestyle.champ 07», certainly wants to defend his title. But from the looks of things, this
might be easier said than done. This year’s starting field is packed with top freestyle stars. And what’s
already clear before the action even gets off the ground is that the Scandinavians are certain to shake
things up for Maurer. Andreas Wiig (Slope Style), this year’s X Games champion from Norway, as well as
Torstein Horgmo (Big Air) and Finland’s up and coming rider, Peetu Piiroinen, who won the prestigious
Burton Open Series, will be certain to make themselves heard when it comes to nailing a title.
The whole gang from the 2008 X Games in the starting field
Freeski title holder, TJ Schiller (CAN), will not be participating in any contests due to injuries. However,
contenders for the title abound. Andreas Hatveit (NOR), Jossi Wells (NZ) and Jon Olsson (SWE) – first,
second and third in the 2008 X Games (Slope Style) – will take to the starting field at Zurich’s Landiwiese.
And for the first time ever in the history of freestyle.ch, Candide Thovex, the freeski star from France, will
light up the sky overtop the Big Air Snow Ramp. Which freeski hotspot will become home to this year’s
title?

Can Mat Rebeaud maintain his winning streak?
The Swiss FMX pilot Mat Rebeaud is absolute proof that one can never get enough of freestyle.ch. This
international top star managed a fourth consecutive win at the Red Bull X Fighters in Madrid two weeks ago
and evidently intends to also grab himself his fourth «freestyle.champ» title. However, he might want to
keep his eye on France’s Thomas Pagès (3rd Best Trick, X Games 08, 2nd Place, freestyle.ch 07), who
has gotten even better since last year and certainly isn’t going to hand anyone a victory at Zurich’s
Landiwiese. Or is Rebeaud aiming for the «crossover.champ» title, one he has yet to attain? Will he be
able to rest it away from the freeskiers?
Is Sandro Dias returning?
Brazil’s Rodrigo Menezes (2. X-Games Brasil 08), France’s Terence Bougdour and the Australian, Renton
Millar (2. X-Games Asia 08) – freestyle 07’s number 1, 2 and 3 – will take to the new Half Pipe in unison.
These guys will have to kick it up a notch if confirmation comes from Sandro Dias (BRA) that he’s also in
the games.
Those wishing to experience the athletes and installations up close are in luck this year with the allinclusive VIP ticket. One-day and three-day passes as well as family tickets for Sunday’s final are available
in advance at StarTicket.ch and at all SBB train stations. 3-day passes are available through August 31 at
the discounted price of CHF 65.- (regularly CHF 85.-).
