Rotary is Service Above Self
How It Began
With the ring of the Rotary bell - there stood noted singer and past
Rotary President Larry Johnson at the podium who said: "I'm not
Jan - but I used to be in a past life." Fortunately, on this, he did not
elaborate but did state: "When our fearless leader asks - I respond."
For a non-singing club - Larry led your fellow Rotarians in "My
Country Tis of Thee" that spilled out onto Rosecrans Avenue. Aliyah
Levin then led us in the 'Pledge of Allegiance.' Larry Wolf followed
with a quote from Woodrow Wilson. Larry claimed to "know nothing
about" President Wilson; so he may consider asking Wendell Harter
about him as Wendell voted for him. The quote was appropriate for
'those who occasionally get too obsessed with work' and is spot on
for the 'Service Above Self' crowd. WW's quote:
"You are not here merely to make a living, you are here in order to
enable the world to live more amply with greater vision with a finer
spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world
and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand."
'Baritone' Larry Johnson then introduced all the guests - Robin
Thormodsgaard's kids - Tracy and TJ. Geoff Dolan brought Darrell
Sperber, one of the new owners and the General Manager of Manhattan
Beach Toyota. Bill Keenan's guests (who presented later this meeting)
were Joe Moller, President of Joe Moller Events and Entertainment
Chair of KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) Los Angeles and Leah
Weiner, Executive Director of KEEN Los Angeles. President Jan
then acknowledged the great job Dr. Paul Sanchez did at greeting

DOGGED DETERMINATION
Ron Sokol, Attorney

Rotary is Service Above Self
our guests this morning. Sports reporter Ian Jackson then reported
on the ever popular (16,000 people!) Manhattan Beach '6-Man'
Volleyball tournament held over the weekend. Ian provided a short
recap of both the surf festival and the 6-Man. The men's was won by
Magnum P.I.; the women's by Paul Martin. President Jan Rhees
then began the formal agenda.
Matching Grants: $7,100 turns into $132,000
Don Ennis (the 'Eagle') next reported on matching grants. "Thank
You Everybody for Magic in Giving!" "Without you guys and that
event - nothing would happen." True that. To make matching grants
work one needs tons of signatures and most importantly buy-in from
clubs in other towns and other counties. Our contributions get matched
by other Clubs for the same noble, Rotary projects. How'd it happen?
On Wednesday, July 29 -- "We started at my house at 7 p.m. - and
worked until about 11:00 p.m. - and then Aliyah Levin ('Up 'til 4:00
a.m.') took our Club's proposal to these other clubs. Your club was
able to leverage $7,100 of our Club's direct donations . . . into
$131,993 - "an increase of nearly 19 TIMES the original donation
amount." It has definitely been worth it for our Club's members to
nurture the relationships with Rotary Clubs in Long Beach, Lakewood,
and Rialto - to mention a few. Three matching grants with Rotary
International were made for Youth Orchestra- Cali, Colombia; LIGA
Rural Medical Clinic; and Solar Power, Water and Sanitation for the
Rural School: Tissikoreye, Mali. Good work Donn.
Joslyn Center “Paint & Plant”
Jan Buike was next up with a wrap up report on the Joslyn Center
'Paint and Plant' work and provided these comments from several
seniors served: "The room looks clean and fresh." "Oh my gosh it
looks so nice!" "What happened - it looks so different!" The Seniors
felt wonderful and most of all the mature Manhattan residents were
pleased as punch that we all took the time to lend a hand to their
home away from home. Hope you all saw the letter of thanks in
The Daily Breeze. Thank you to Richard Ham, Wade Austin, Jr.,
Vinny Fazzino and Paul Allman and all of the Rotarians who were

there (you know who you are) and to the city employees for all their
expertise. Come by and enjoy the ambience. We look forward to a
continuing relationship with Jan Buike and our fair city's senior citizens
.
Milestones
Herb Trachtenberg's birthday - led in song by Jan Rhees. Herb is
48 this year by the way. We are speculating. Tom and Mary Rose
Jeffry - 28 years together. . . John and Roberta Rhind, and David
and Jane Long - 17 'short' years . . . 'Seems like only yesterday'
commented Dave Long. Congratulations to all.
Happy Dollars
Immediate Past President Roger Civalleri is happy to be back having missed one year and one month of breakfasts last year while
serving as President of our club. We all wish Patti Civalleri a speedy
recovery who contracted illness on their trip abroad. Richard Ham
reported on a trip to Oshkosh, Wisconsin with Dave Harris and Mike
Doell to attend the Experimental Aircraft Association's event. They
flew on Rich's Beechcraft Bonanza - and loved all the war stories some good, some . . . not so much. Geoff Dolan gives 20 bucks for
NOT being there on Sunday at the Paint and Plant on Sunday. Roger
Cox gives dollars for the New Zealand Rugby team - big losers - but
there is always next week. . . . Lee Walker announces the 'melding' of
his wife's design business with his business in the same office (good
luck with that). Roger Civalleri again gave more to report on the
Rotary Exchange student Alex Portales - whom he and Patti visited on
their Spain visit. "They live in a city that is similar to Manhattan Beach."
Cool. Aliyah Levin was so happy to announce she is now working as
a consultant for a planner in Westchester for water restoration; the first
application and job that uses her new masters degree. Walt Hindenlang
announced that since his practice moved to South Redondo last year after 6 years - he is resigning from our Club and gave $100 happy
dollars for the honor and privilege to know all of us. Walt will be
welcome to come back anytime. Giusy Buonfantino now sees her
husband regularly ("I am sooooo happy.") and is happy to be back in
town. President Jan opined: "Thanks also to Giusy for the Neutrogena
products to help MB Rotary raise money for polio."

Craft Talk
Cheers for Robin Thormodsgaard - she compiled her talk on short
notice AND she had to deliver it 'short' due to time constraints. Lets
begin: 132 fellow South Dakotans in her home town of Grant makes
her town's population only slightly bigger than today's gathering of
MB Rotarians. Robin had to wear a metal brace for the first two
years of her life which is amazing given what she later accomplished
athletically - particularly on the basketball court. Her teams made the
state tournament in high school all four years and Robin held EVERY
record in the record book along with lots of State titles. She scored a
record 2,232 points, averaging 23.8 points per game and makes SI's
Faces in the Crowd. (Good Lord - we have a female Michael Jordan
amongst us.) Track was another sport she excelled in high school on
the way to the University of Iowa with a full ride basketball scholarship
- in 1980 - the first for a woman. Wonderful pictures throughout the
talk - showing all the athletic prowess, funny costumes and weird
hats. Lots of other Iowa connections including Hall of Fame coach
Vivian Stringer - who is a good friend and mentor. Upcoming on
September 11 - Robin and daughter Tracy head to Basketball Hall of
Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts to see Coach Stringer inducted.
Just a little something mentioned about pesky work: 22 years in
information systems at a number of large companies - Wellpoint,
Northrup Grumman, IBM, PWC, and PWC, Trust Company of the
West. Kids are covered - Tracy and TJ - very cute in the younger
days and now beautiful and handsome and also excellent athletes.
Nice work. "Other children" - two beautiful dogs. Mom, Dad, and
Grandpa and Grandma (AKA "Old Fart" and "Old Fart's Wife")
pictures are shown. Robin's hometown was ruled by the Anderson
(Robin's maiden name) Clan - they'd cornered the market on grain
elevators and mayoral positions. Nice mom too - she goes on Spring
Break with her kids (Note: Check with TJ and Tracy on how 'nice'
that really was). Robin also volunteered to feed the football team,
studies the Bible at church, and loves wine country visits with friends.
Any questions? Here's one: Do you still shoot hoops? Yes and
regarding the possibility of a one on one game --- she'll take ANYONE
on "if they really want to do this'. Think twice. Thank you Robin.

KEEN-LA: “Kids Enjoy Exercise Now”
Bill Keenan then introduced Leah Weiner who explained what KEEN
- Kids Enjoy Exercise Now - does. KEEN is a volunteer run nonprofit organization that provides FREE recreational programs for kids
with disabilities throughout the year. From June through August
KEEN kids swim at the LA Police Academy. From September through
May KEEN kids work out of the Elysian Park Center. All of our help
are volunteers ('coaches') and KEEN provides all the training.
Volunteers range from kids to seniors - those who have to do
community service to those who want to do community service -perfect for those in Rotary with the motto: Service Above Self. Each
child gets a coach; those with more severe disabilities get two. KEEN
will take all athletes aged 3 - 18 years old -- with any disability. No
one is turned away. Kids with Downs syndrome, autism, cerebral
palsy and other children with 24/7 care requirements are prevalent.
Volunteers get benefits too - leadership skills, networking, as well
as the benefits of sharing one's time. Kids have fun, the service is
free and it is a non-competitive environment. KEEN does a lot of
partnering that allows it low cost or free use of facilities and
transportation. KEEN has grown significantly since the founding
of the Los Angeles affiliate two years ago: 100 volunteers have
turned into 1,000 and kids served have grown from 35 to 65. Joe
Moller, KEEN's Entertainment Chair, then announced the upcoming
2nd Annual Gala at the Bel Air Bay Club on November 14, 2009.
Attendance here also helps KEEN if 'Coaching' isn't in the cards
for you. All Rotarians and guests are welcome to come to this
great event at this beautiful venue. Come join us on August 16 at
10:30 for a short training session and then 'Coach' from 11:00 a.m.
- 12 p.m. for Manhattan Beach Rotary's KEEN Day.
Opportunity Drawing
Number 755 wins. . . but Orris Cowgill owns it - and since he
contributed the bottle of Newton wine - it was back to the drawing
board. The new winner - after a false start by John Hugunin -- is
Ron Sokol. For all the marbles and $300. . . Jan Buike wins the
right to draw . . . and comes up empty. Wait until next week.
Rotary is Service Above Self
Directors Want To Talk
But wait. . . there's more. Directors have a notion to provide short
updates. Roger Cox mentioned a certificate of appreciation - sign up
if you were there at the Joslyn Center last Sunday. Donn Ennis wants
you to go to our website - see the International Grants - find the Dear
John letter - Donn challenges you to find it . . . and sign up for Dine
Around . . . Tom Jeffry has more shows in the offing, Spamalot is
upcoming. He also wants us to sign up for the District Picnic. Richard
Ham thanks all for your Joslyn Center senior fix-up work. . . John
Hugunin announces we can now all contribute to polio eradication
via the website using your credit card.
And that’s the way I heard it . . .
