JACOB’S WELL CHURCH KAIROS MATERIAL HEXAGON WEEK 10 JACOBSWELLMN.COM/DISCIPLESHIP WEEK 10 - HEXAGON (PRAYER) LEARNING GOAL As a follower of Jesus, God wants us to have a deep, intimate relationship with Him. He wants to hear about our concerns, needs, anxieties, struggles, desires, and receive our worship. Like a young child that crawls into the lap of their father to tell them about their day, we are called to approach the throne of grace with 1 confidence through prayer . PRIMARY TEXT – MATTHEW 6:5-15 5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. TERM TO BE UNDERSTOOD PRAYER – talking and listening to God. TRUTH TO BE LEARNED Jesus did not just teach about prayer, He showed His disciples how to do it . We do not get to just learn about it, but see it. Jesus taught us that life as His disciple and prayer are simple and hard. We have tried to make it complex and easy. The disciples watched Him pray and said, “Teach us to pray like that. John taught His disciples, maybe you could teach us.” Jesus said, “Okay, pray like this.” He gave us six statements. 1 Hebrews 4:16 PICTURE TO BE COMMUNICATED “OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN” – THE FATHER’S CHARACTER Jesus begins his prayer with a simple word that embodies an important relational concept: Father. Jesus uses the Aramaic word Abba, an informal name we often translate as Daddy. It is an intimate name for an intimate God. This would have been unheard of before this moment in time. Yahweh is a holy God that you would not dare approach in an informal way but because of Jesus’ standings, He opens the door for us to all press in and call the sovereign Creator of the universe, Daddy. “Hallowed be Thy name.” God is very close and yet He is very different. We offer respect to our Father and our God for He is holy, with no darkness or sin. We pause to acknowledge that He is what we long to be. Our spirits yearn for this God-likeness to be a reality in us so that God’s glory is revealed to others here on earth. We long to bear His image. “YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR W ILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN” – THE FATHER’S KINGDOM Here Jesus says, “Yes, you have been fully adopted into God’s family. You have every right to Him but do you realize who your Daddy is? He is the King!” Not a king, the King. So we say, “I want what you want, Daddy. Your kingdom is an awesome kingdom of light and love, and I want your kingdom to advance in this world of darkness and hate. My desire is the same as your desire: to see everyone come out of this world of sin and into your kingdom of forgiveness. I want your rule to advance and be known in this world.” The Kingdom of the Heavens Is now advancing Invade my heart Invade this broken town2 “GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD” – THE FATHER’S PROVISION As humans, we are needy beings. In prayer we can admit those needs. We have physical needs like food, shelter, clothing, etc. that must be met daily. We need health in our bodies. We have spiritual and emotional needs that also must be cared for daily. We need strength in our spirits. “Daily bread” could include all of this. 2 Jon Foreman, Your Love is Strong This is where we pull a chair up to our Father’s table. We acknowledge that he has the means to feed us, whatever our hunger is. We go to Him with our most basics needs anticipating He will feed us from His bounty. We ask because it demonstrates not our need, but our trust in His provision for us. “FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS, AS W E ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS” – THE FATHER’S FORGIVENESS God has given us territory that is ours, and His provision within that territory is full and without want. Yet for some reason we often stray from our land and try to take what is not ours. We trespass into our neighbor’s land and incur a debt we cannot pay. When we transgress against another we are saying, “God, what you have given me is not enough.” And for this we must ask forgiveness. We need to be aware that God has set a path for us; He has called us and given us a destiny. In this prayer we are asking God to help us not to stray from His place within His kingdom. And when other people stray from their path onto ours, hurting us and abusing us and causing us pain, then we need to forgive them as God has forgiven us. “Keep us, Lord, from being indebted to you in withholding forgiveness from others.” When someone hurts us, withholding forgiveness is like slapping Jesus in the face, “Yes, I want you to forgive me of my sin, but I do not want to forgive that person for that thing!” A choice not to forgive can 3 find at its root a distorted and misconstrued view of the Cross . “LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION” – THE FATHER’S GUIDANCE Up until now, the prayer has been dealing with our relationship with the Father and with those around us. Here the prayer changes, now it is about us and representing our God, being His image bearers, together , to the world, and asking for God’s help. “When you place us into the world, Father, to do your bidding, to 4 advance Your kingdom, give us the strength to be in the world but not of the world .” “AND DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE” – THE FATHER’S PROTECTION We have an enemy who does not want us to experience the life Jesus has for us. We have an enemy who does not want us to bear God’s image to our world, individually and collectively, and who will stop at nothing to thwart God’s plan to use us as His image-bearers in our world. His devices of evil include temptation to participate in that evil. If we are led astray by his temptations, 5 eventually we will end up in his hands. The evil one comes only to steal and to kill, says Jesus . To the enemy, success looks like us entering into eternal death, forever separated from the love of Jesus. He wants to steal our health, steal our joy and our love, and steal our ability to be a blessing machine to our world. We pray for God’s protection, confessing our inability to bear God’s image apart from His strength and protection of us. We cannot fight the enemy apart from His strength. W e cannot do it! Our strength is mere weakness. We need God’s promised deliverance. God’s strength is true strength. God’s strength 6 7 is perfected in our weakness . In Him, we have nothing to fear . KAIROS MOMENT Have everyone in your Kairos Group share something they desire prayer for. Each person in your Kairos Group should take a moment to pray through the hexagon for another person’s needs.
