SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY TO CUB HAVEN SPRING NEWSLETTER-2015 By Kim Garlick As I sit and compose this newsletter, the snow is falling in Cub Haven. Nice for us snowmobilers and pilots with skis on their planes, but I know the rest of you are anxious for summer and the Fly-In! Rest assured we are hard at it, (when I’m not out flying around the woods on the Polaris ). Because in the past there had been numerous requests to hold the Fly-In for 5 days instead of 4, we tried it out last year & it went over quite well. The attendance on Tuesday was great, and we only got one complaint about charging admission `a day before the event’. This gentleman just wasn’t aware that it was the first day of the event, not the day before! So mark your calendars : The 30th annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven will be held Tuesday, June 16th through Saturday, June 20th at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport/Castanea Picnic Grounds…same venue as always. The gates open at 9:00am Tuesday, with opening ceremonies at 10:00am. The featured aircraft this year are: The E-2 & Piper J-2. We are also celebrating the 75th birthday of the Piper J-5. Cal’s pre-fly-in party will be held on Monday evening this year, (read on for the location)! The Fly-in will add an extra night of entertainment for your enjoyment. This year the bands start on Tuesday evening instead of Wednesday. As usual, we will have food vendors on site to offer you a nice variety of food to choose from at very reasonable costs. For a certain pilot who is known to sample every flavor of ice cream we have, the ice cream lady ( AKA Jane) will be back! And don’t forget the nightly corn boil at 5:00, famous for its .50 cent ears of corn, thanks to Fred Jackson! Grab an ear to go with dinner. Gary’s Cub Pub is open from 5:00pm till 10:00pm or so, Tuesday through Saturday. There will be the complimentary daily forums to attend, Barry’s tractor rides through the field of planes & nightly entertainment under the pavilion. The bands play Tuesday through Friday from 7:00pm till 10:00pm. Bring your lawn chairs so you can relax while watching the bomb drop, spot landing competitions and the take-offs & landings of some very cool aircraft. Those with planes are encouraged to take part in the annual poker run, which Camp FUBAR organizes. The flight takes a couple hours to complete and you get to fly over some very nice scenery. Watch for the postings placed throughout the vendor court for information on pilot briefings, times, etc. BULLETIN BOARDS, POSTINGS, RULES, ETC. Throughout the vendor court you will see several free-standing bulletin boards. Please take a moment to read the info that is posted on them. We will have the event schedule, forum schedule, competitions, ground rules & regulations posted, as well as other items of interest. Reading it could save you many trips to the information trailer, but then again, you wouldn’t get to talk to Cal & John, either! Please understand our position when you’re kindly asked to keep your pet on a leash or lead your pet away from the food court, where people are eating. We love animals too, but our guests don’t appreciate them in the food area. We also love children and want to keep yours safe. That is why all children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult AT ALL TIMES while on the field, ( meaning within the airport boundries ). There is a large bulletin board under the pavilion for you to post your items for sale, etc., and a large map w/push pins for you to mark where you flew/drove from to get here. Please take a moment to “push your pin”! IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS! We are seeking out people who would like to step up to the plate during the fly-in by lending a hand. If there are any members or attendees out there who would like to help the week of June 15th, please call Kim, Carmen or Betsy at 570-8934200 or e-mail [email protected]. Help is needed in various areas such as registration, transportation, souvenir table, flight line, etc. Thanks go out to all the volunteers who give up their free time during the Fly-in, and to those guests who so eagerly offer their help while they’re here. Without them we would not be able to hold an organized fly-in relatively free of chaos! Thanks, y’all. AREA ACCOMMODATIONS If you are planning on making the 30th Annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven and are looking for a place to stay, log on to our web site. There you will find a list of the area’s hotels, motels & B&B’s. A very BIG THANK YOU to those men and women in transportation who volunteer such long hours, and the following dealerships for providing you with this courtesy: Alexander Chevrolet, Central PA Auto Auction, K&L Motors and McIntyre Chevrolet/ Buick. J-3 PIPER CUB NAMED PENNSYLVANIA STATE AIRPLANE Written by Sharon Hoy At a ceremony in Harrisburg, PA, on November 17, 2014, Governor Tom Corbett signed Bill # 1989 making the Piper J-3 Cub the State’s official airplane, the culmination of a long and tedious process. This puts the J-3 Cub in a place of honor, along with the State flower, tree and bird, among others. Mrs. Elizabeth Piper, wife of William T. Piper, Jr, (deceased), accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Piper Aviation Museum. She said, “This is a most beautiful day for the Piper Aviation Museum, its founding family, and general aviation, as well as all the citizens of Clinton County. It also is a great day for the city of Lock Haven, the William T. Piper Memorial Airport and the fine employees that were a part of Piper Aircraft and making of the J-3 Cub.” Mr. Steve Rubino, Board member of Piper Aviation Museum, was on hand to represent Sentimental Journey. The idea was born back in 1998 at the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the J3 Cub by Piper. John Bryerton, President of the Piper Aviation Museum, spearheaded this effort, taking the idea to Mike Hanna, Clinton County State Representative. Mike and John developed a plan, including getting support letters from local officials, Sentimental Journey and several people associated with the Piper Museum. Mike Hanna prepared and introduced House Bill # 1989, collected co-sponsors and answered legislators’ questions. The main question was why the Piper Cub deserved this special recognition? Mike explained not only was the J-3 designed in Pennsylvania but almost 20,000 Cubs were built, most of which were built in Pennsylvania. No other manufacturer could even come close to this achievement. Bryerton further stated,” Mike and I certainly thought this was more than enough reason and with the Piper Employee event planned for September, we needed to make that happen”. After much hard work and persistence, Mike was able to get the PA House and Senate to pass the bill on June 17, 2014, with approval by the Governor on June 26th. Rep. Hanna presented a signed copy of the proclamation to the Museum at the Piper Employee Homecoming event, held at the Museum on September 14, 2014. The Piper J-3 Cub is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. With fore and aft seating, it was intended for flight training but became one of the most popular and best-known light aircraft of all time. The Cub’s simplicity, affordability and popularity invokes comparisons to the Ford Model T automobile. The Cub’s standard chrome yellow paint has come to be known as “ Cub Yellow “ or “ Lock Haven Yellow “. The distinctive yellow paint and the Bear Cub emblem allows it to be easily recognized by even the novice. When the J-3 is flown solo, the lone pilot normally occupies the rear seat for proper balance. This balances the fuel tank located at the firewall. The aircraft has been popular among flying schools, especially from the pre-World War II existence of the Civilian Pilot Training Program using them in the U.S. and it remains so with private individuals today. A great showing of Piper J-3 Cubs is evident each June at the Sentimental Journey Fly-In at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport in Lock Haven, PA. This event will be held from Tuesday, June 16- Saturday, June 20, 2015. Vendors, Advertisers & Short Stories There is still time to reserve your vendor space for the fly-in, and/or advertising space in our awesome program book. We’ve kept the vendor fees and advertisement costs the same as last year, and they’re very reasonable. We are also seeking people to send in short stories of your experiences at Sentimental Journey, your flight to get here or any aviation related story that you think might be interesting or entertaining. Space permitting, we will put your stories in the program book. Please send to: Sentimental Journey P.O. Box J3, Lock Haven, PA. 17745. If you would like to be a vendor or would like to advertise in the book, please contact Kim @ 570-893-4200, e-mail: [email protected]. For Your Entertainment As I mentioned before, this year Cal is hosting his Pre-fly-In party on Monday evening instead of Tuesday evening. Since he has sold his house, the party will be held at John Spencer’s house on the Island Road, approximately 1 mile east of the airport. (go east on Water Street, pass the airport & cross the bridge, then go approximately 1 mile.) The Fly-In gets underway on Tuesday at 9:00AM, and the nightly entertainment under the pavilion begins Tuesday evening at 7:00PM. Opening the show on Tuesday evening will be The Lindy Sisters performing their songs from the WWII era. Wednesday evening will be Phil Reeder’s band, Loose Cannons, playing a nice variety of music. On Thursday evening Chris LaRose will entertain you with songs from the 40’s, 50’s to present. Back by popular demand, The Celtic Martin Band will be here on Friday evening and are bringing along some young women who have a Western swing band. Both bands will be sharing the stage that night. A big THANK YOU to Phil & Sharon Hoy for helping to support The Celtic Martin Band. If you would like to sponsor or support a band, call 570893-4200. THE AWARDS BANQUET The awards banquet will be held on Saturday evening at 5:00 in the blue vendor building. Once again, Betsy has done a great job in the planning of the event. The purpose of the Awards Banquet is to recognize and honor those whose aircraft our judges feel are outstanding. If you would like your plane to be judged, fill out the card that comes with your pilot pack, and place it in your window. The cut-off for judging is Friday at noon. That gives enough time for the trophies & plaques to be finished for the awards banquet. We encourage everyone who believes their plane might win an award, to please attend the banquet, or have a representative present to claim your award. Mailing out trophies & plaques isn’t an easy feat. Sponsored by Phil & Sharon Hoy, Emmy Award-winning for “Outstanding Broadcast Performance,” Trumpeter Chiz Rider will open for the Color Guard Ceremony. Once again, Donna from Furst Corner will be catering the event. Donna’s meals are always delicious! Steve Garner will be back to entertain you on the piano while you dine. Be sure to get your banquet tickets when you arrive at the fly-in. Don’t wait until they are sold out. To reserve tickets, call 570-893-4200. BRITISH EMBASSY BIKERS PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS The weekly Thursday night get-together of The British Embassy will once again be held at the pavilion this year. For those of you who don’t know..a nice group of guys/gals who like bikes as well as planes, get together every Thursday evening to talk shop! During the fly-in they like to hold their Thursday get together at the FlyIn and hold a People’s Choice Award competition. There is a number assigned to every bike, & you are encouraged to look over the bikes and cast a FREE vote for your favorite one. It could be the ugliest or the nicest...it’s your vote! The voting goes on from 5:00pm – 7:30 or so. The bike with the most votes wins a nice gift bag filled with Sentimental Journey souvenirs. If you don’t take it upon yourself to get off the picnic bench & vote, be assured a very persuasive young woman (Yours Truly), will be there encouraging & gently reminding you. She might even take you by the hand & lead you there herself! All kidding aside, you really should check out their bikes, there are some pretty unique ones among the bunch. PRE-REGISTRATION If you pre-register (PRE-PAY) for the Fly-In or if you actually pilot a plane to get here, you will receive a FREE pilot packet that contains a 2015 program book and a 2015 patch, along with other materials. We’ve been asked why everyone who attends doesn’t get a free book & patch. The reason is: the cost of these items continues to rise, and at now far exceeds the nominal admission fee of $8.00 per day. After all, we are the fly-in known throughout the country for keeping our costs to a minimum. You won’t find a $3.00 cup of coffee anywhere near here. Even though we realize we can never please everyone, we do value your opinions and are always looking for ideas to better our event, so any suggestions would be welcomed. If you have an idea that you think you’d like to share, please call or email us at: [email protected]. CAMPING For those of you who would rather camp than stay in one of the many hotels/motels or B&B’s, we do offer camping on the grounds. The prices remain the same as before: Under-wing tent camping on the airfield & tent camping in the designated camping area are both $ 15.00 per night. Self-contained RV camping (Without Hook-ups) is $ 20.00 per night. There are showers and indoor toilets w/ running water on site. Camping fees begin the day you arrive, regardless of when the Fly-In begins. If you arrive before registration opens or after they have gone for the day, please be honest & settle up with them as soon as they open for business. PLEASE don’t send money for camping, we don’t take reservations. If you have children under the age of 12 camping with you, we ask that you camp in the designated camping area on the outside (south side ) of the airport fence, rather than on the field. All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult AT ALL TIMES while on the field, inside the perimeter of the airport’s fence. This is for everyone’s safety and peace of mind. There are too many turning props on the field, but none in the camping ground. Thank you for understanding our position on this.
