L.O. To understand the importance of the River Nile to the Ancient Egyptians.
Whole Class
5minutes
Discuss the four
reasons why The River
Nile was so important to
the Ancient Egyptians.
1.Farming:
When the river flooded, the
Egyptians used the water to grow their crops.
They were mostly grain farmers who grew
wheat and barley to make bread.
The children did not go to school because even
they had to help on the farm!
The Pharoah ordered the farmers to work hard.

2.Mud Houses:
The Egyptians used the
mud from the river to build mud houses.
However, when the river flooded, it washed
away the mud houses.
They figured out that if they made bricks using
the mud and some straw, the houses were very
strong.

4.Protection:
The Nile also protected them
from attack. The people who wanted to invade
Egypt would have to first cross the river, which
was very wide. The Egyptians could stand on
their own side of the river and throw spears at
their attackers. Any attacker who did cross the
river was likely to be tired from making the
crossing.

Whole Class
5 minutes
To lift the water from the river they
used a shaduf. A shaduf is a large
pole balanced on a crossbeam, a
rope and bucket on one end and a
heavy counter weight at the other. By
pulling the rope it lowered the bucket
into the river. The farmer then raised
the bucket of water by pulling down
on the weight. He then swung the
pole around and emptied the bucket
onto the field.
