Austin – Finishing the Dream Austin Advertises CHEAP LAND in Texas The Old 300 I-Moses Austin has a Plan! 1-Moses Austin has a plan to bring U.S settlers to Texas and start a colony in Spanish Texas. 2-Moses Austin travels to San Antonio seeking approval for colonization by the Texas Governor. 3-The Texas Governor was suspicious of U.S citizens coming into Texas. He would not let Moses start a colony. 4-As Moses was making his way out of San Antonio, he bumped into an old friend named Ba ron de Ba strop. Bastrop knew the governor and would help Moses Austin with his plan, and get approval to colonize. 5- Moses Austin got really sick on his way home, and died. Before he died, he had asked his wife to send for his son, Stephen F. Austin. IIStephen F. AustinFinishing the Dream! 1-Stephen F. Austin would now takeover his father’s dream of colonizing Texas. Before he can colonize Texas, Austin has to convince the new country of Mexico to allow him to colonize. 2-Mexico had fought and won its independence from Spain in 1821. Spain was no longer part of North America. The country of Mexico was born and was in charge of Texas. 3-While waiting for Mexico to say yes, Austin finds the land he wants on the Brazos River. This area would have mild climate, fertile soil, plenty of water and timber. Wild game for hunting and it was near the Gulf coast for supplies to arrive by ship. 4-Mexico would agree to let Austin to bring settlers. Mexico will pass the Imperial Colonization Law. This law will allow Austin to bring in settlers from the U.S 5-Austin is told he may form his own government for the colony, act as judge and form a militia (a small army) to protect it from Indian attack. III- Austin advertises CHEAP LAND in Texas!! 1-Austin’s offer was very attractive to people from the U.S. 2-In the U.S. people had to pay $1.25 per acre and buy a minimum of 80 acres with cash up front. 3-Austin was selling land for 12 .5 cents an acre and they could pay it off over time or with goods. 4-Heads of households would receive 640 acres of land. 5-A married man could get another 320 acres, plus 160 acres for each child. 6-Slaveholders could claim 80 acres per slave. Settlers who provided valuable services or who brought items such as cotton gins might receive extra land. 7-In order to get this great deal settlers had to meet 3 requirements: A- They had to be hardworking, lawabiding citizens. B-Had to become Catholics C- Had to become Mexican citizens. IV- The OLD 300 1-Austin’s first colony was made up of a group called the Old 300. These were the first 300 families that settled in Austin’s colony. 2-Most were from the southern U.S. and were farmers who brought their slaves. 3-Most were welleducated and lawabiding. 4-After Austin, many more EMPPRESARIOS (people who brought settlers to Texas in exchange for land or money) set up colonies in Texas. 5-Texas became full of U.S. settlers looking for good, cheap land and better opportunities.
