Rubik’s Cube Delhi Open 2017 Our mind has the power to solve the problems that may seem most complex at first glance. The Rubik’s Cube is one such 3-D combination puzzle, invented by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik , originally called the magic cube. It boasts of approximately 43 Quintillion scrambled states with only one solved state. It took Ernő Rubik one month to solve his own puzzle. And the Rubik’s cube is one of the simplest mechanical puzzles. A 4x4x4 Cube (Rubik’s Revenge) and Megaminx are examples of puzzles with more complicated mechanisms. The complexity involved may make it sound like it would take a genius to solve it. However, with the development of advanced speedsolving methods and puzzle hardware, there is a big community of puzzle enthusiasts who can solve these puzzles in minutes, and often lesser. Tryst IIT Delhi welcomes all speedsolving enthusiasts to compete in Rubik’s Cube Delhi Open, breaking their personal bests and witnessing the best puzzle solvers in the country live in action. Competition Brief The competition will be governed by the World Cube Association(WCA) Regulations. WCA governs competitions for all puzzles labelled as Rubik’s Puzzles. WCA organizes competitions all around the world and has done so in over 120 countries. The goal of WCA is to have more competitions in more countries with more people and more fun, under fair and equal conditions. Rubik’s Cube Delhi Open was initiated in 2010 as a part of Tryst IIT Delhi and has witnessed many national records being broken since then. All results secured in the competition will be uploaded in the WCA Database and each participant will receive their national, continental and global rankings in all the events he/she participates in. Eligibility ● This competition is open to everyone. There is no age criteria ● Pre register for the event through http://bit.ly/IITDRubiksgame ● The participants must also pre-register on World Cube Association website after making a WCA account if they do not have one Competition Structure The competition comprises of 11 events from the 18 officially recognized by WCA: ● 3x3 Rubik’s Cube Famous for being the best selling toy in the world of all time, the 3 layered puzzle boasts of 43 quintillion permutations - only of them being the solved state. ● 2x2 Cube A smaller version of the 3x3 Cube, this is the easiest puzzle to solve. Yet, solving it requires skill and cannot be done purely by luck. ● 4x4 Cube 3 layers was too easy? How about an additional layer? This puzzle is the smallest puzzle that a computer hasn’t been able to solve optimally. ● 3x3 One Handed Why solve with two hands when you can solve with one? Taking support from any body part is not allowed. ● 3x3 Blindfolded This adds a whole new challenge to solving the cube. The cube needs to be first memorized and then solved blindfolded. Memorization time is also included in the total time. ● 3x3 Multiple Blindfolded This is the most difficult WCA event. The participant is given 10 minutes per cube for up to 6 cubes and 60 minutes total for any number more than that. The participant must memorize all cubes before donning the blindfold. The score is calculated as (Number of cubes Solved - Number of cubes Unsolved) and time taken is used to break ties. ● 3x3 With Feet Sometimes solving the puzzle in itself is not the challenge, but turning the puzzle is. The competitor must inspect and solve the puzzle using only his/her feet. ● Pyraminx A tetrahedron invention by Uwe Mefferts. It is the easiest non cubic puzzle to solve. ● Megaminx Known for being the WCA event with most number of sides, i.e. 12 sides. This puzzle is conceptually similar to a Rubik’s cube but more demanding. ● 3x3 Fewest Moves Challenge (FMC) A scramble sequence is given and the competitor gets a time of 1 hour to find the shortest possible solution. It is a pure test of algorithm than speed. ● Square-1 This beautiful puzzle can change its shape. In a solved state, it looks like a cube. But when scrambled, it can take very fancy shapes. 3x3 Cube Megaminx Pyraminx Square - 1 Event Format ● All events except 3x3 Blindfolded, 3x3 Multiple Blindfolded and Fewest Moves Challenge will be held in an average of 5 format. The best and worst solve will be removed and the mean of other 3 will be used as the result. ● For a description about detailed format of all events, please refer to WCA Regulations. ● This video should give you a visual explanation of the solving procedure and the important rules. ● If this is your first competition, this video will give you a good description of what to expect at your first competition.
