Kigatsuku means “to notice, to become aware, to perceive, or to realize.” We can think of it as “the desire to act without being told what to do.” Another word related to kigatsuku is service—and this is a great month to be of service to others. Japan has a thriving economy currently ranked number three in the world. With a rich history and a true appreciation for culture, this amazing country has been among the world’s leaders for hundreds of years. With principles, honor, and values, the people of Japan have been able to transform the world with their technology, art, and inspiration. On March 11th, 2011, a powerful, 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Japan, triggering a tsunami with waves 30-feet-high that reached the U.S. West Coast. People felt shaking in cities all over Honshu, Japan’s main island. Scientists have determined that the power of the waves moved the island of Honshu about 8 feet. With hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes and cities, the people met in special centers to get food, water, and clothing. The people waited quietly in lines that were blocks long. There was no pushing or shoving to get what they needed. There were no police who had to keep people in line and orderly. What was it that made the humble Japanese people like this? It was kigatsuku. Students, as we look around us this month and throughout our life, let us remember to have kigatsuku, or a strong desire to act, to help, or to make good choices, WITHOUT being told what to do. Mr. O’Brien would love to have you write him notes of ways that you have served or that you have seen kigatsuku in others this month. Please hold on to any uniform clothes your kids grow out of and donate them to the school. The money we raise goes to different programs that benefit our kids here at the school. Please watch for donation boxes that will be put in the Elementary and Jr. High lobbies. Drama Club Hello parents! In January, I am starting an after-school drama club and I’m hoping to get a lot of parent involvement! For the elementary side, we will be doing the Standin’ Tall values series (http://www.britekids.com/collections/series). Each play is only about 20-30 minutes long and focuses on one of the following 11 values: obedience, work, honesty, dependability, gratitude, forgiveness, courage, happiness, self-esteem, cleanliness, and love. These plays are super fun and the music is catchy and is easy to learn. Your kids will love it! This is a great opportunity for your children to have fun with performing, while at the same time instilling APA’s builder values. For the secondary side, we will do M.T.I. Broadway Jr. plays (http://www.mtishows.com/broadwayjunior/shows). There is quite a variety to pick from: Peter Pan, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, etc. Parents and students will decide which shows to do. These shows are only 60 minutes long, so they will not entail nearly the effort as a full-length musical. They have also been specifically tailored to fit the needs of a new junior high theater program. I am hoping that we will get a lot of students interested in being involved in some part of production, whether it is acting or helping behind the scenes. I will need at least 3-4 parents to help with the elementary side and 3-4 to help with the Jr. High side. We will need everything from directors, choreographers, costume help, and set designers (sets are for the Jr. High productions). We will also need help staying organized. No experience is necessary! If you are interested, please contact Amy McKay at 801-360-0040 (text is best) or [email protected]. Lost and Found Please come take a look at our collection of lost and found items. At noon on Tuesday, December 20th, we will be contributing any uniform items to the uniform sale and donating the other items to charity. As you are acquiring new clothing items this winter, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE label everything with your student’s name so that we can return any lost items to the happy owner. Thank you! There has been an incorrect schedule circulating around. We are hoping for the final, revised copy to be available soon. The girls are doing great. We are still looking for a parent volunteer who would be willing to come in once or twice a week to help setup plays for the girls. The coaches are doing their best but they would love added help. The girls are welcome to come to an open practice next Monday, December 19th. There will not be practice on Tuesday, December 20th. In about a month, we will have our first game. If you would like to volunteer, we need parents who would be willing to help keep score and keep track of statistics during games. It would only be for an hour during each game. For any questions, please e-mail Mrs. Bradford at [email protected]. When we have games, PLEASE come out and support the girls! The girls love seeing faces that they recognize and having family and friends present for their games. It puts such a big smile on their faces and they want to show you how amazing they all are. *Boys’ Basketball We do not have the game schedule yet, but we are hoping to have it next week. If you are willing to help keeping score during the games, please let Mr. Herrick know. If you have any questions, please e-mail Mr. Herrick at [email protected]. *APA-Salem Science and Engineering Fair The Science and Engineering Fair was really exciting this year. We had amazing projects from the 6th grade and secondary students. Seventeen judges volunteered to talk with students about their projects, and each project was judged three times. It was exciting to see the students talking about their research and the work they have done. Winners will be announced later this week and we will be sending representatives from each grade division to the Utah Valley Charter School Science and Engineering Fair at UVU in February. Thanks and congratulations to all who have worked hard to make this event a success! *Curriculum The Winter Break is a wonderful time to read a good book! Reading University logs are ready for next term. The list of Reading University books can be found at www.americanprep.org/reading-university. AchievingAcademicSuccessandDevelopingGoodCharacter Facebook: www.facebook.com/americanprepSalem APA Salem: (801) 465-4434 Elementary Ext: 142 Secondary Ext: 123 *Salem Parent Carpool Sign-up If you are looking for someone to share the drive to and from school, sign-up for our Salem Parent Carpool! If you would like to participate, e-mail Ms. Garrett at [email protected]. She will send you a link to a map of the families who are participating. The only information on this map is your last name, address, e-mail address, and the grades of your students. This link will be sent out and will be visible to ONLY THOSE FAMILIES who choose to participate. *Barnes and Noble Book Fair Results The final numbers are in from the Barnes and Noble Book Fair. Through the participation of our APA community, we raised $1,300 which will go to purchasing books for our schools. We could not have contributed this much to our library without all of our parents' sponsorship. In fact, this year we beat the numbers from last November. Thank you for all your help with this endeavor! Winter Weather Closure American Prep follows Nebo School District with regard to school closures due to inclement weather or emergencies. Parents should check the Nebo School District website for school closure information (http://www.nebo.edu/) or listen to these designated television or radio stations for school closure information between the hours of 6-8 am. If traditional Nebo District schools are canceled, school at American Prep will be canceled. If there is a late start for Nebo School District, we will have a late start at American Prep. If only selected schools in Nebo School District are closed or on late start schedule, American Prep will operate as NORMAL. Parents are ultimately responsible for deciding if inclement weather is severe enough that they cannot drive to school. (If schools dismiss early, the media will air the announcement as soon as possible.) If Nebo School District dismisses early, American Prep will dismiss early.
