This allows great flexibility in how and where these services can be used, enabling smart living to become a reality. 6 Opportunities for the forward thinking installer LexCom Home Flexible and future proof The principles of the LexCom Home system are founded on the single network cable used to distribute all signals around the home, removing the need for separate cables such as co-axial, telephone and cat 5. This high capacity data cable has been designed to satisfy present and future transmission speed demands, ensuring the system will meet the future requirements of the client, a key consideration for anyone considering a home network. The hub of the system is the distribution centre, or patch panel as it is generally called. Incoming signals for telephone, data and television are connected at this distribution centre. Using a star type wiring system, a number of cables are run from the central panel to each room where services are required. These cables are terminated in each room with wideband RJ45 outlets of the same type. Patch cables are then used at the central unit to route the incoming signals to individual outlets around the home. This gives the LexCom Home system amazing flexibility, as it is simple to change any outlet in any room to receive whichever incoming signal you require. A telephone outlet can easily be switched to receive TV, radio or internet within seconds. DATA TV TEL Enhancing the experience A basic system provides significant benefits, however the addition of a system modulator will enhance the system further for the user, whilst providing installation contractors with one of a number of upgrade options. This upgrade allows central equipment such as Satellite/Cable, DVD and Videos to be broadcast around the home, meaning they can be viewed and importantly, controlled from any room in the house via infra-red remote control. Other upgrade options include the PC Player which acts as an FM modulator, allowing centrally located music such as MP3 files on a PC to be played on any stereo in the house. 7 Installation and planning There is a big difference between installing a LexCom Home network and conventional electrical and telecoms installations. If the installation is not completed correctly, the bandwidth and capacity of the network may be reduced, reinforcing the need for installers to have sufficient theoretical and practical training. 3 2 4 8 1 7 5 6 Basic components of the home network 1 Data module for computer networks, with four ports 2 TV / radio module for six TV connections plus AV input 6 Distribution centre, where incoming cables from aerial, telephone and the building network are connected to the home network 3 Patch cables 7 Shielded LexCom Home cable, eight wires 4 Patching area 8 Universal outlet with two jacks to be mounted in Square D’s Wiring Accessory product SQLXH2 5 Distribution module for eight connection points for telephone / ISDN / fax / modem Certified installers are also able to verify the installation allowing Square D to issue the necessary certification to give an extended function and spare parts warranty. Testing and Verification requirements to qualify for these warranties are covered on the Square D training. This certification provides an assurance to the home owner that the completed installation satisfies the requirements and relevant standards for a LexCom Home network system. 8 Opportunities for the forward thinking installer LexCom Home The following provides an overview on some of the considerations prior to designing a Lexcom Home system. Customer needs It is important to define at an early stage what is required of the cabling infrastructure. Up to 40 outlets can be connected at the largest distribution centre, however this would constitute a large installation. Evolving or future needs for new functions / applications can easily be met by changing or adding a module. System planning stages:■ Define number of outlets (consider planned and future usage – example bedroom becoming a home office application) ■ Choose accessible position for panel ■ Choose room outlet location and plan cable runs (consider room layout and length of cable runs – see cable lengths below) ■ Define services to be distributed – data, telephone, TV (consider upgrades such as satellite or Audio distribution) ■ Define parts list:- - Cable (300 or 500m drums) Distribution cabinet (16, 24, 26 or 40 outlets) System components (such as power supplies) Active modules (based on services being distributed) Wideband RJ45 connectors and Outlet face plates Patch leads and appliance connecting leads ■ Optional products such as Modulators for distributed satellite/DVD/Video Cable lengths To maintain optimum signal performance between the distribution centre and the outlets, no cable must be more than 40 metres long. To avoid over-driving of the TV signal, no installation cable should be less than 8 metres long. Positioning the distribution centre Position the distribution centre as centrally as possible in order to minimise line lengths to the outlets. The centre requires a fused 230V supply therefore this should be provided in close proximity to the panel. Also locate the BT master socket as close as possible. Position the centre at a convenient height for operation and maintenance. The ambient temperature should be between ±0 and +40 °C. Positioning outlets Plan for at least two outlets in each room to meet future demand and to provide flexibility. Square D recommend a telephone network socket in rooms such as the hall, lounge and master bedroom, and an aerial outlet in the main living areas, bedrooms and the kitchen. 9 LexCom Home product selector Part No Material description Qty/Pack Distribution centre and accessories LXHSPANEL1 LXHSPANEL2 LXHSHDPANEL14 LXHSHDPANEL22 LXHSFLUSHKIT14 LXHSFLUSHKIT22 LXHSBLANK2040WH LXHSBLANKWH LXHSFRAMEBLK LXHSFRAMEBLU 26 Outlet Patch panel 16 Outlet Patch panel High Density Panel Conversion Kit (converts 16 outlet patch panel LXHSPANEL2 to 24 outlet) High Density Panel Conversion Kit (converts 26 outlet patch panel LXHSPANEL1 to 40 outlet) Flush kit for LXHSPANEL2 (26 and 40 Outlet) Flush kit for LXHSPANEL1 (16 and 24 Outlet) Blank Plate For all panels - provides additional shrouding for used RJ45 outlets (Pack of 50) Blanking plate - white, shrouds unused DIN rail cut-out Black lexcom frame w/out dust cover Used with High density conversion kit to secure RJ45, (aids colour coding of services) Blue lexcom frame w/out dust cover Used with High density conversion kit to secure RJ45, (aids colour coding of services) 1 1 1 1 1 1 50 1 LXHSPANEL1 10 10 System modules and active components LXHS12VPWR4MOD LXHAA11065 LXHAS100 12v DC power supply for 4 modules TV/radio module (6 TV’s & AV input) Data switch module (4+1) 1 1 1 LXHAT100 LXHSC1103 8 Port telephone module (2 x lines - max 4 extensions per line) 3 way RF combiner 1 1 IR IR IR IR 1 1 1 1 LXHAA11065 Infra red controls LXHUIRPACKB LXHUIRPACKS LXHUIRRECS LXHUIRRECB 10 Link - Receiver & emitter black Link - Receiver & emitter silver Receiver - Silver Receiver - Black Opportunities for the forward thinking installer LXHUIRRECS LexCom Home Part No Material description Qty/Pack Upgrade Options LXHUAV1101* AV modulator 1 channel 1 LXHUAV1104** LXHUPCP110 AV modulator 4 channel PC Player 1 1 LXHUAV1114 Installation Cable and Patch Leads LXHCABLE300 LXHCABLE500 LXHSTOOL LXHSPATCH LXHSPATCHPACK LXHUAVCORD2 LXHUAVCORD3 LexCom Home Installation cable S/STP, 4 pairs, 300m LexCom Home Installation cable S/STP, 4 pairs, 500m Cable stripping tool S/STP patch cords 0.5m S/STP patch cords 3 lengths (24, 27, 32 cm) AV Connecting Cord 2m AV Connecting Cord 3m 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 LXHSPATCH Accessories LXHA100OHMPLUG 100 Ohm termination plug - fit into unused outlets on TV modules 10 LXHA100OHMPLUG Outlet Plate Components LXHSRJ45 LXHSFRAME SQLXH1 SQLXH2 Wideband RJ45 connector Modular housing to hold RJ45 in outlet plate (white) 1 gang LexCom home outlet plate 2 gang LexCom home outlet plate 1 50 1 1 Note: For use with other manufacturers faceplates please consult us Appliance Cable Connectors LXHUTVIRBL LXHUTVIRWH LXHUTVWH LXHLAPBX TV/R with IR link 3m balun black TV/R with IR link 3m balun white TV/R link 3m balun white Line Adaptor Unit (RJ45 to BT) * Replace in June 05 with LXHUAV1111 ** Replace in June 05 with LXHUAV1114 LXHSRJ45 1 1 1 1 LXHUTVIRWH 11 LexCom Home multi room audio Multi room audio further enhances the LexCom Home experience for the user, whilst for the installer it provides yet another important upgrade opportunity. A completely new concept in built-in multi-room audio systems, it has been designed for very high-quality music distribution throughout the home, using LexCom Home networking cable, and without the need for additional specialist loudspeaker and audio cables. The system is based on intelligent ceiling mounted active speakers that provide all the amplification and control needed. The system can be controlled either via wall keypads or by elegant infra-red remote handsets. 12 Opportunities for the forward thinking installer LexCom Home System structure The system comprises of a central audio hub housed with the LexCom Home patch panel. This hub processes the audio source and provides outputs for up to six separate zones located around the home. Typically each zone has an active speaker pair fitted within the ceiling, providing on board amplification and quality high fidelity sound. The discreet nature of the system makes it the most unobtrusive multi room audio system available. Installer benefits include: ■ Simple wiring infrastructure (respects LexCom Home parameters – i.e. maximum cable length of 40m) ■ Simple installation and commissioning (plug and play approach) Multi source installations In larger properties where there may be an increased requirement to utilise multiple audio sources from different locations, a multi-source hub may be specified. This allows up to six different audio inputs to be routed to up to eight different zoned outputs, allowing users in different rooms, to simultaneously access and control which audio source they listen to. Consult your local Square D sales engineer for availability (planned June 2005). Standard wiring & ease of installation One of the most attractive features of the system, from an installer’s perspective, is the use of LexCom Home cable throughout. This carries power, control signals, and left and right-channel balanced line audio. It is therefore very easy and extremely cost-effective to pre-wire an installation in a new property, using standard tools, materials, and techniques that would be familiar to most installers. All connections to loudspeakers, keypads, and wall sockets are via Katts type 110 punch-down connections. This not only offers easy termination, but also a very quick way to correct a wiring error. Control options System control is offered by either an infra-red handset or wall-mounted keypad. Some models of the active speaker have built-in infra-red receivers, as do all keypads. The system includes an infra-red pass through, allowing third-party hi-fi equipment to be controlled from any of the zones or subzones using the manufacturer’s original remote control. 13 Multi room audio product selector Part No Description Qty/Pack System components LXHQHM16 LXHQKPM1 LXHQRM1 Distribution hub - single source Supplies balanced audio, IR and power via LexCom Home cable to up to 6 zones 1 Keypad Keypad with integral IR receiver 1 Remote control handset For use with either IR enabled speakers or via LXHQKPM1 keypad. The system can be programmed to provide customised control of lighting, heating, ventilation and electrical appliances – and also has numerous built-in features to protect both people and property. These features include a safety and security concept which comprises smoke, gas, water and burglar alarms, allowing a fully integrated home that protects, acts and communicates with the user even when they are away from home. 16 Opportunities for the forward thinking installer Smart homes have been around for some time but only for the privileged few. Complex technology, and an inability to produce to economies of scale, meant that costs were prohibitively expensive. However, IHC is the first central intelligence system in which all functions are controlled from a simple centralised hub, making the system accessible, flexible and affordable. Inputs and outputs are connected to a central controller loaded with all the necessary programming. Windows dragand-drop software is used to create the required settings, which means that any changes required in the future are easily carried out via a PC. Should the mains power be cut, all settings are protected by a batterypowered back-up. Intelligent Home Control Smart yet simple Input module Controller Output module IHC - a flexible solution The system can be continuously updated to accommodate changing requirements, while at the same time it saves on energy, and frees system users from some of life’s more trivial everyday tasks. IHC is a SELV based system with a star-coupled network configuration that is easily programmed to suit individual needs. Simple to install, the system offers a direct route to customer satisfaction by providing tailored solutions, based on developers or end user requirements. Building business for the future IHC also builds longstanding relationships between you and your customer, as most requests for system modifications will naturally be directed to you as the original installer. Alternatively you may wish to offer system maintenance checks, annual inspections or software changes as a way of generating new revenue streams. New opportunities For homebuilders and property developers, IHC delivers a unique differential to drive sales. It offers buyers a package of benefits unlike any other, adding value, comfort and security to their purchase. In secure or sheltered housing situations, IHC means more options, more flexibility, and for those with disabilities, a higher degree of independence. 17 Customer dialogue Project planning for an IHC Control home installation starts with either developer or future homeowner discussions. To obtain the best results and ensure both short and long-term customer satisfaction, it is important to try to identify all the customer’s existing and potential future needs. Developers are more likely to offer a basic solution whilst homeowners will likely specify lots of additional functionality. The principle here is to ensure the benefits offered are tangible and support home usage. Examples could include, home simulation control as an added security feature. This approach should allow the preparation of a checklist of the functionality required, and the physical location of user interfaces such as switch positions to be determined. It can be very difficult for the client to define which functions are needed in a house they have never lived in. By asking about habits and normal routines combined with your experience, you should be able to uncover your clients needs and wishes and offer a bespoke system. System design and implementation Customer requirements must now be translated into a parts list, driven mainly by the number of inputs and outputs required, the central controller can process up to 128 inputs and 128 outputs. IHC Visual is then used to complete the project planning, allowing much work to be completed before physical installation begins. IHC Visual is Windows-based software, supplied on CD-ROM and is used for configuring, setting up and programming the IHC control system, proving invaluable throughout the IHC control project – from planning through to hand-over of the finished installation. With IHC Visual you can configure an IHC control installation offline from the system controller. This means you can complete the configuration prior to installation, and also test the programming using the IHC Visual simulator, which can be run both offline on your PC and online with the PC connected to the controller. Key decisions at this stage include the planned location of input and output modules (i.e. centralised or decentralised). Decentralised placement makes for a more orderly, tidier installation and minimises cabling and wiring, however occasionally the preference is for all DIN rail modules to be centrally sited. 18 Opportunities for the forward thinking installer The signals between the controller and the input and output modules are conveyed via a serial data line. IHC control system cables IHC LINK-6 and IHC LINK-10 are recommended for data transmission and power supply of input and output modules, and also for use with decentralised module installation. Care should be taken during installation however to ensure voltage segregation requirements as laid out in BS7671 are complied with. Intelligent Home Control System cabling System configuration and documentation After the final test of the functionality by simulation, the programme is transferred to the controller, and the system operation proven. All necessary documentation is generated by the IHC software, aiding client handover. 19 IHC product selector Part No Material description Qty/Pack DIN modules and cable: Building blocks for systems Controller and power modules SQ121B6202 Visual controller 128 input/output – 2 modules wide 1 complete with Win.
