Purchasing a Domain Name You want a great domain name that is clear for everyone. But, make sure that it isn’t just an acronym. An acronym will be easy to write down, but won’t make sense to everyone and also won’t be great for Google. Google likes to see your keywords in your URL. For our music school, we purchased www.RogersMusicLessons.com because it is full of keywords. Something a little more ninja that you can do is to also pick a name that is easier to remember that you can direct people to or to use in your advertising if it makes more sense. We also own www.RogersSchoolofMusic.com which is the name of our music school. You will never find that URL on Google, but if you type that in, it will automatically direct you to www.RogersMusicLessons.com. To purchase your domain name, you will have to find a domain name registrar. That is just a fancy term for a place to buy domain names from. There are a lot of them out there and any of them can work. My personal favorite is GoDaddy.com. It is easy to navigate and they have amazing customer support. Go to their site and start searching for a domain name. They will tell you what is available for anything that you type in. I would always stick with a .com domain as it is the most recognizable domain extension and what everyone expects. The only caveat to that is if you are a non-profit, then going with a .org is a good choice. If possible, you should buy both .com and .org and make the .org forward to your main domain. You can buy your domain for as many years as you would like. There is actually no benefit to buying it for a lot of years all at one time, you don’t get a discount. If you do only purchase it for a short period of time, make sure that you have auto-renew turned on so that when your year or 2 years is up, you will automatically renew. Now you are ready to publish your new website to your new domain! *Never Alone Business Services is not supported or endorsed by GoDaddy.com
