St. Anne’s of Byron, The New Champions!
CYO American League 5th Grade
Girls went undefeated and took the
East Diablo League Championship,
then it was off to the Diocese of
Oakland Playoffs. “This year the
girls set and accomplish a goal to
win the Championship. That’s pretty
remarkable at any age.” –Chris
Clingshoff, Assistant Coach
After winning the first game against
St. John Vianney of Walnut Creek
20-4, the girls came back the
next day against St. Perpetua 1 of
Lafayette and rallied from an 11
point deficit at half time to win by
one point (20-19) in the closing
minutes of play. “I hope it showed
them that they should never give
up, they took on the challenge,
worked hard as a team, and pulled
it off, what a memory this will be.”
–Don Williams, Assistant Coach
Once the celebration ended it
was time to go back the following
weekend and face another
undefeated team, Christ the King of
Pleasant Hill. With momentum on
their side, St. Anne’s played a great
game to win 22-10 and clinch the
Diocese of Oakland Championship.
“This team really stepped up to the
competition during playoffs. They
got better & tougher with each
game. I am so proud of each of
them! –Becky Packard, Head Coach

Local 5th Grader Takes Top Honors at Gold N Grand
It was a wet and wild weekend at the Spring Gold N Grand horse show
held the last weekend of March at the Murieta Equestrian Center. Alexis
Steele and her horse, Intoxicating Zippo braved the wind, the rain and the
mud to compete in their very first show together. Alexis and Intoxicating
Zippo have only been riding together since October. They have been
working hard with their trainer, Carol Dal Porto of Dal Porto Ranch. Their
hours of time in and out of the saddle really paid off. The pair competed
in 4 different western classes and together they earned a Championship
buckle in both Equitation and Pleasure, a Reserve Championship buckle
in Showmanship and a Top 5 Finisher buckle in Walk/Jog Trail for 10 and
unders.
Alexis and Intoxicating Zippo were also the 10 and under High
Point Champions for the weekend. They were awarded a beautiful
saddle as their prize! What an incredible way to finish off their first
show! The weather couldn’t dampen their spirits or their desire to ride.
Congratulations to Alexis and Intoxicating Zippo! Many thanks to Carol for
her coaching, training, dedication and planning!!
Alexis and her horse are setting their sights on the World Championship
Appaloosa Youth Show being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma this July.
From the Beginning to the End - Coach Bordi
Discovery Bay resident, Steve
Bordi (Mt. Diablo HS ‘57, Cal
‘61), was presented with a plaque
honoring him as an inductee into
the 8th annual Mt. Diablo Sports
Hall of Fame, on April 2nd.
Coach Bordi played for Mt. Diablo
as an all league center fielder on
the first two championship teams
in 1956 and 1957. He was an
assistant baseball coach at Cal
Berkeley and left in 1962, when
he returned to Mt. Diablo High
School as Varsity Baseball Coach,
winning baseball titles in 1963,
‘64, ‘65, and ‘66.

This ended a streak of ten
baseball championships in
11 years. Since 1966, there
hasn’t been another baseball
championship to date (44 years).
For baseball, this is a Contra
Costa high school record. Only
De La Salle high school has a
longer consecutive winning
streak, but for football.
Coach Bordi finished his 41 years
of teaching and 28 years of
coaching at West Valley Junior
College, in San Jose (19692002), winning championships
in 1973 and 1974. In his years
of coaching, he had 41 players
sign professionally, two at Mt.
Diablo, and 39 at West Valley. His
last year of teaching was at Deer
Valley High School in Antioch, in
2003.
Discovery Bay residents know
Steve Bordi as an outstanding
community volunteer - a
Discovery Bay Lion, and one of
only two Lifetime Boosters of
the Discovery Bay Chamber of
Commerce.
Congratulations, Coach Bordi!
