LIVING IN FULL COLOR
2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Gary
Jeannie Rogers
Philip Varchenko
In Loving Memory
Wingspan remembers these beloved members of our
community who died during the past year.
G ARY
Gary lived at Wingspan’s Oliver House. He was an artist,
having his self-portrait displayed at the Smithsonian’s
Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art & Portraiture.
He had a large loving family and was a much-loved
member of our Wingspan family as well.
JEANNIE
Program Director Jeannie Rogers was a deeply loved
and treasured member of our Wingspan family for more than
40 years. She was creative, filled with grace, had an incredibly
wry sense of humor, was immensely kind and loving and touched
the lives of so many people who lived and worked at Wingspan.
PHILIP
Program Director Philip Varchenko lived a life of
dedicated service, and his hallmark was his selfless ability to
help, console, guide and lift others up. Phillip was industrious,
intelligent, tenacious, kind-hearted, compassionate and,
like Jeannie, built an ever-widening circle of friends.
DEAR FRIENDS,
The only constant in life is change, the old saying goes, and for all of
us at Wingspan Life Resources, it’s never been more true than this year.
• Early in 2016, we said farewell to Wingspan’s long-time Executive
Director Pat Moore. We are indebted to Pat for her steady leadership
of Wingspan for 25 years and wish her well in retirement.
• On March 31, Wingspan moved to new headquarters near downtown
St. Paul offering us so many benefits – offices for all of administrative
staff in one location for the first time in our history, conference
rooms and a staff learning lab, along with ample room for growth.
• This year, Wingspan achieved its highest fundraising total to date!
Now more than ever, donations play an increasingly critical role
in providing the highest quality of life for all we serve. Our deepest
gratitude to all those listed in this report.
• Wingspan’s In-Home Program has nearly doubled in size over several
years ago, with 40 clients taking part in programming this year. With
the greater focus at the state level on individuals living independently,
this program plays a pivotal role in Wingspan’s future.
While change is inevitable, one thing remains unshakeable – our
dedication to Wingspan’s mission. The following pages highlight a
few shining examples of how our clients, families, volunteers, donors
and staff members, together, live out that mission day in and day out.
In closing, we thank you for being part of the Wingspan family!

I thank God

Heroic Staff
K N E W W H AT T O D O
When Woodbridge Coordinator Brenda
Spraggins smelled smoke in the house, she jumped into action
without hesitation. Discovering that a small fire on the porch had
grown into flames, Brenda and staff member Nasu Mboma quickly
escorted residents Guy, Tim, Chris and George out the door and
across the street to safety. After firefighters doused the blaze, Roseville
Fire Chief Tim O’Neil hailed the two caregivers as heroes. The house
was a complete loss, but with donations from Wingspan friends and
the public, the men were resettled and cared for in a hotel with
everything they needed for a temporary stay. The foursome has since
moved into a new Wingspan home in New Brighton.
Just a week before the Woodbridge
home caught fire, Brenda Spraggins,
Nasu Mboma and other Wingspan
staff had taken part in a fire drill.

Weeks after the WoodBridge House
fire, Guy and housemates moved into
their new house in New Brighton.

“
FOX News carried the story of the
Woodbridge House fire, prompting an
outpouring of help from the community.
Guy came to Wingspan
downhearted and heavy with a sense
of abandonment. Now he is happy,
active, experiencing newfound
fellowship, and has a tremendous
sense of pride.
”
– Frank Merrill, Program Director
A New Lease
ON LIFE
A nursing home resident for many years, Guy
came to Wingspan’s Woodbridge House two years
ago overweight, unhappy and without much
hope. But as the months passed in his new
environment, a transformation took
place. With staff encouragement, Guy
became more physically active and
ate a healthier diet, eventually
dropping 50 pounds. He began
attending church with new
Wingspan friends, always
attired in suit or sport
jacket. He’s gone to
Gopher games, got the
chance to observe Vikings
spring training and took
a vacation to Florida with
a housemate. Today Guy
happily embraces the many
opportunities that are the heart
of Wingspan’s person-centered
Guy with friend LuLu
programming.

Brand New Van
GIVEN IN LOVING MEMORY
The “Bob Mobile” represents a wonderful milestone
for Wingspan. The retrofitted 2016 Dodge Caravan
is the first brand-new handicap-accessible van
Wingspan has ever owned, a welcome
addition to Wingspan’s aging fleet
of 34 previously-owned vehicles. The
van benefactor, Donna James, made
her legacy gift even more special
by dedicating it to her beloved late
husband, Bob and for use at Thomas
House where Donna’s sister, Lori,
lives. Christened the “Bob Mobile,”
the new van is now on the road
providing safe, reliable transportation
to Lori and housemates for medical
appointments, visits with friends and
family, and special outings in the community.

Here’s hoping it’s just the first in a line of
Renee, Lynn and Lori pose in
new vehicles to serve Wingspan clients!
front of their new vehicle.
“
Purchasing new vehicles has been beyond
our budget for years, so to receive this gift means
so much to everyone at Wingspan.
– Therese Davis, Executive Director

Lori is proud of the Bob
Mobile, named in memory
of her brother-in-law.

Self Expression
Opportunities to nourish creativity abound
year-round at Wingspan. Last December, for
example, Delta Tau sorority members at Hamline
University shared the holiday spirit with clients
by helping them construct and decorate
whimsical gingerbread houses. In April,
puppetmaster Lys Ackerman-Frank and
clients crafted colorful hand puppets.
Later, Wingspan hosted five “Art Days”
for In-Home clients and similar
events at several Wingspan group
homes, where budding artists
could enjoy social time with
friends while working on
individual projects. The
resulting pieces of artwork –
from rain sticks and greeting
cards to paintings and
sculptures – were displayed
for sale at the spring Wingspan
Glee Club concert and Art Fair.
Wingspan Gala guests enjoyed viewing
puppets created by Marge and other clients.

Lovely Landscaping
FOR THE GOLDEN GIRLS
Seventeen-year-old Ryan Tennant and his team of
fellow Boy Scouts devoted two Saturdays in May to
making life a little more beautiful for the so-called
“Golden Girls” of the Portland Avenue House.
Portland’s housemates include Ryan’s Aunt Gail.
Assisted by Gail’s brother, Bill Hamer, and his wife,
Ginger, the young landscapers mulched, weeded
and trimmed, and planted hostas, lilies and several
other perennials, whose flowers the Golden Girls
have enjoyed all summer. Pizza and pop, courtesy
of Wingspan, topped off the days of hard work.
“
Many thanks to Ryan and his team for
doing such an amazing job. The Golden Girls are very
excited about their new and improved yard.
– Pam Carlson, Director of Operations

board member Bill Hamer.
Michelle and her dog Robin

“
Pets are welcome in our
programs because people are
generally healthier, both
physically and emotionally,
when given the opportunity
to be around animals.
”
– Maureen Merrill, Program Director
A Special Love
FOR SPECIAL PETS
Patti and her dog, Lily, a seven-year-old pug, are great
pals. In fact, Lily is popular with all the residents at
Wentworth House and is considered the house mascot.
Lily goes along with Patti on her volunteer job to
visit elderly residents at the Minnesota Masonic
Homes, and the adorable pooch never fails
to make folks smile, as she does every day
at Wentworth. Pets like Lily are beloved
by many Wingspan clients. In all, Wingspan
is home to five dogs, 14 cats and a bird!
Patti gives
Lily a big pug hug.

TOGETHER
Finding Contentment
At Wingspan’s Tsev Laus Kaj Siab – Hmong for “place of contentment” –
Hmong elders find support, fellowship and community along with
services to improve their health and well-being. It provides a respite
for family caregivers who take comfort knowing there is a safe place
for their older loved ones. Wingspan is honored to have pioneered
the first adult day center for Hmong elders in Minnesota.
Elders and staff at Wingspan’s adult day program
for Hmong elders gathered for a group shot.
