Other useful information
Time zone
New York City is on EST – Eastern Standard Time
(Greenwich mean time minus four hours during daylight
saving time, from March into early November, and minus
five hours the rest of the year). Currency
In New York City and throughout the United States, the
US dollar is the standard currency. This converter allows
you to determine the value of other currencies compared
with the dollar.
Safety
New York is America’s safest large city, but visitors should
still use common sense to protect themselves and their
property. Be aware of your surroundings, and make sure to
always use licensed, reputable businesses for any services
you need. For example, don’t hail livery cabs (as opposed
to taxis) at the airport. For more information about safety, read the tips for visitors.
• General Emergencies (police, fire or ambulance): 911
• NY Police Department Switchboard: 646-610-5000
• NY Fire Department Switchboard: 212-999-2222
• Transportation NYC government agencies and
any questions or requests about City services
(non‑emergency): 311 or 212 (639-9675)
• Directory assistance: 411
Climate
New York has a warm humid temperate climate with hot
summers and no dry season. The weather gets warmer
and drier in June, when spring merges into summer. During
this month, the average temperature for the city starts off at
18°C, with daily highs increasing from 23°C to 27°C over the
course of the month.
Electric power in the USA
Electric power is standardized in all states across the USA.
It is set at 110 Volts and 60 cycles. Standard electric plugs
have two flat blades. The plugs on some newer appliances
have a third round grounding pin.
If you bring any electrical appliance to the USA, you may
need an adaptor to fit the US electrical receptacles. You may
also need a converter to change the voltage from 110 volts
to 220 volts.
