WE NEED YOUR JEANS! Dakota County 4-H members are participating in a statewide 4-H Community Service project and are collecting jeans for two service projects. Teens for Jeans is an organization that donates jeans to teens in shelters and homeless organization. Jeans give a sense of normalcy to a person, and are a desired item since they can be worn multiple times between washes and can be dressed up or dressed down. Sole Hope has organized a campaign to stop jiggers in Uganda. Jiggers are a small sand flea that burrow into exposed skin, normally feet, and lays eggs which then cause further damage after hatching. The shoes help protect the feet by not allowing the jiggers easy access. Denim is a strong fabric that will hold up with use but is also soft enough that it is comfortable to wear. Over a million young people experience homelessness in the US every year. One item they often request? A pair of jeans. The nicer jeans will be distributed through Teens for Jeans and the more worn and out of style will be cut into the patterns to be made into shoes for Sole Hope. We would very much appreciate any and all used denim that you can donate whether it be a nice pair that was simply outgrown or an old pair that just won't sell at a rummage sale because it is out of style. Any and all sizes are acceptable, as well as jean jackets, skirts, etc., for Sole Hope. Jeans can be dropped off in the box located in the lobby at the Dakota County Extension and Conservation Center in Farmington. Jeans will be accepted until May 31.
