PO Box 2273, Bayswater Village LPO, Bayswater, 3153 www knoxroadrunners com Knox Roadrunners January 2009 newsletter Welcome to a New Year at Knox Roadrunners. After such a big year in 2008, can we get better – we actually finished with a World Record. Also in this newsletter we have fun run results, our charity donation, pictures from our Christmas Party, the arrival of our new tracksuits, and even a “shaggy goat” story. The year ahead promises good things. Our many new 60 year olds are showing form with Vic “Flat Chat” Potter back from injury and our girls in good form too. of pre-school children diagnosed with Autism. KR has now donated 4 years in succession and we have been put on the “Friends of Irabina” shield for groups that have provided support over long periods. We are pleased to support Irabina. The donations we give are from our annual fees and part of the weekly coin in the tin – it’s a good story. World Record Young Lavinia Petrie ran 13.406k in exactly 1 hour at a Doncaster Athletics meeting on 29 September 2008. This has just been ratified as a WORLD RECORD for a lady W65. Wow! Irabina Donation On 6 December we presented our annual donation to Diane Bailey-Tribe, Director of Irabina Autism. Di and her team in Bayswater have been doing great things to support the families What’s Said on the Run # 25 – January 2009 www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 1 Lavinia beat Belgian Berthilia De Preter’s 9 yo record by 939m. She becomes the only Masters WR holder with multiple WR’s. She has set many over the years and still holds the World Record for W60 1 hour run, and the Australian Records for W60 Mile & W60 3,000m. We believe that once her dicky knee improves, Lavinia is a serious chance for the Half Marathon W65 Australian Record also. Lavinia is celebrating a great year holidaying with her sister in Arizona – probably running around somewhere. Our team trophies have arrived and are doing the rounds of the team member homes – they look good. Note that Bronwen Cardy is also one of the Masters Athletics world best distance runners with 6 national records from 3,000m to Half Marathon – more on this in a future newsletter. Marathon Trophies: It was great to have KR singlets on the podium. Also the battle to the line between Michelle and Vic is one to look forward to during 2009. We had some of the big name KR runners there too: It was a tough task to select our performance award winner for 2008. Kathy Souter had a second excellent year in a row and is a popular and deserving winner. She ran a series of top ten results and her Melbourne Marathon was a cracker in tough conditions. Helena Thorn picked up the major door prize. The winners of this award for 2008 are Peter & Heather White. This lovely couple have done much for our club and members for decades. They are popular and deserving winners. We believe the photo’s of Anna & Denise in the doorway have been confiscated by Glenda (or maybe put on the wall in John’s shed) but check out some of the happy souls: Kathy, Rhonda, Dave, Brian & Denise Pete & Heather checking their names are both on the “Leo” KR Christmas Party 2008 Glenda, Marion, Bridget, Dave & Bobby Helen organised another cracker of a Christmas party with help from Nicole and other members. The photos tell you the theme was red & green. We were entertained by Mark Bamber and fed & watered by our own efforts. It was a great night to get together, celebrate our friendships, and let our hair down on the dance floor. Some amazing outfits were on show with the lovely Ute winning the best dressed What’s Said on the Run # 25 – January 2009 www.knoxroadrunners.com DT, Greg & Gerry Page 4 Summer Running The warmer season gives us a chance to have a little sleep in with runs starting a little later on January mornings. All runs are away runs. We return to Bayswater from the first Saturday in February. John, Shelly, Gavin, Narelle & Marie All summer runs have a breakfast afterwards. If you need a rest from running but still need a chat, come for breakfast afterwards. Several walkers are likely also. Valentines Weekend 13-15 Feb 2009 Prize winners Ute & Neil Barry Boyd 1944-2008 Barry was a special member who served as our Treasurer for a decade. He was fast and competitive on the track and daunting in a verbal challenge. Barry was a keen runner, punter, and lifetime Cats supporter, and also a wonderful son to Joan. Yes, this fantastic weekend at Aireys Inlet is on again in 2009 thanks to the hospitality of Helen & Ed. Same arrangements as per previous years – details soon. It’s a popular weekend for members and partners. Get your name down early because numbers are limited. And they run out of coffee mugs at the lighthouse too. Email Helen or Mike to attend – we expect cost will be $30 per person for accommodation. Some will need to bring bedding & all will assist with food. The hill run is on of course, led by Helen and the lighthouse walk is led by Ed. Some of the KR mob at Fairhaven after the Saturday run & breakfast in Feb 2008. What’s Said on the Run # 25 – January 2009 www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 5 Marie chased by a goat! “Sunday morning (14 Dec) I wish someone had followed me with a video camera! I went out for a run early morning, and half way into my run, I was running down Morack Road, passing Vermont Secondary College, when I saw a man walking along in the opposite direction, closely followed by a goat. Whilst this was a very unusual sight, I assumed that they were together, but noticed that the goat was not on a lead. As I passed, the goat must have decided that I looked like more fun, as it turned around and started chasing me! I had no idea how fast a goat can run, but this one was not quite as fast as me, so the gap between us was gradually increasing, but still the goat chased me. I hoped that when I turned the corner the goat would give up and go home, but it just kept following, and bleating loudly! After turning the next corner, I crossed the road, and again the goat followed. I deliberately ran on the path so that the goat wouldn't run in the road, but the goat did run in the road anyway. I was getting worried that if it followed me too far, the goat wouldn't know how to get home. It followed me for a good kilometre, almost down to Morack Golf Course, where I passed a man walking in the opposite direction, at which point the goat must have decided that he would be easier to follow, so it gave up and turned around. It would have been a hilarious sight to see me running along at a fairly brisk pace, closely pursued by a goat! I do hope he found his way back home.” Marie running hard, but the spectators are all looking for the goat. New KR Tracksuits: John Signorini took on the tough task of arranging new tracksuits for the first time in nearly 20 years. The result is fantastic. John & Glenda - the model couple John being a “sucker for punishment” is now planning to do an order for running gear soon. This will be singlets and other running tops only – we only do this every two years. What’s Said on the Run # 25 – January 2009 www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 6
