What “Torah” Means
The “law of the Lord” is known by the Hebrew people as
“Torah.” We find out about some important things related to the
Torah in Psalm 1. To begin with, in a most limited sense, “Torah” is
often used to refer to the first five books of the Old Testament:
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. In a much
broader sense, sometimes when “Torah” is used it means the entire
spectrum of Jewish laws and teachings. It is this latter sense in which
Psalm 1 appropriates the use of “Torah.”
To begin with, there is little conjunction in the Hebrew text of
Psalm 1:2 that most English translators gloss over and ignore. It is
‘im, which is best translated by our English archaic word, “Lo!” This
English word is an exclamation here that is used to draw attention to
an interesting or amazing event, so says the Oxford English
Dictionary.
What this is that the Psalmist is drawing attention to
something quite amazing. What is it? Plain and simple: the blessed
person’s delight is in the law of the Lord.
That may be hard for us to fathom because we usually associate
drudgery or disrespect with the word “Law” and all that goes with it.
But here the Psalmist is giving an alternative picture of the heart of a
person who does not number themselves with the ungodly, sinners,
or the scornful.
“Lo, his delight is in the Law of the Lord.” The book of
Psalms has a very positive outlook on the essential nature of the law.
It uses the concept of “law” more than any other book in the Old
Testament. A comprehensive or exhaustive treatment of the word
“Torah” in Psalms would be quite an undertaking.
However suffice it to say here as a beginning that “Torah” is
divine instructions given for the benefit of humanity, especially in
light of the covenant relationship God has with his people. These
instructions are something to delight in because they give direction
for the most blessed life that can be lived to the fullest with God’s
divine blessings and approval. “The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the
simple” (Psalm 19:7).
In Christian love, Curtis
“The fool doth think he is wise. But
the wise man knows himself to be a
fool.
—William Shakespeare—
Let no man deceive himself. If any man
among you seemeth to be wise in this world,
let him become a fool. That me may be wise.
