…with vision
At the cutting edge – and still improving
We are constantly striving for the perfect solution, driven by our
determination to
•deliver the engineering skills required to create spectacular
buildings,
•construct the infrastructure which can form a basis for the
development of our society,
•create a sustainable balance between the environment, the
climate change and modern living, and
•support people, businesses and official institutions in the
development of their countries and help them create a better
life.
Our greatest pleasure is meeting these objectives, but to achieve
all of this, we need to put in a little extra effort. The result is
Value Engineering with the NIRAS touch.
We take engineering consultancy as our starting point, but we
have added several other competence areas to our organisation in order to provide our customers with the solutions they
deserve. Today, our team of 1,000 highly-qualified specialists
performs knowledge work across a number of disciplines,
ranging from engineering to natural sciences, social sciences
and management services.
Our expertise is based on experience gained from over 40,000
projects in 172 countries and 12 regions. Nevertheless, we continue to introduce first rate young specialists into our workforce
in order to ensure the perfect balance between the latest know
ledge and well-established experience.
However, we will only prevail in this ever-changing world if the
capabilities of our knowledge workers are enhanced by an even
more interdisciplinary and innovative approach to our customers’ challenges.
At NIRAS, we have not yet met a task too small to handle,
nor one too large. No assignment is too simple and none too
complex. Our dedicated professionals rise to the challenges and
constantly seek to improve performance.
We look forward to working with you…

Service based on values
Our mission is to realise our customer’s project vision in the
most successful way. Our key customers tell us that NIRAS at
its best is characterised by three catchphrases:
We listen – We learn – We deliver
This is why we have chosen this motto as our value statement. It
is our ultimate aim and, in order to live up to this goal, we must
continue to develop and improve performance on the basis of
dialogue with our customers and partners around the world.
We believe this is crucial if we are to
•meet the needs of our customers to the full,
•adapt our knowledge to the circumstances of our customers,
always taking geographical, cultural and social backgrounds
and conditions into account, and
•share knowledge with our customers and partners, helping
them to apply it efficiently and to their benefit.
We strive for the sustainability of the projects to which we contribute. This means that we aim to provide our customers with
the highest possible value, the best cost-benefit ratio, and the
smoothest-running operation and maintenance programmes.
We wish to have a positive effect on both society, the environment and climate change, in line with our values and Scandinavian management tradition, the well-being of our employees is
one of our main concerns.
Since 1956, we have contributed to making Denmark the
country in the world with the highest quality of life and we continue to develop Scandinavian traditions in our work. We listen
to your needs with an open mind, we learn in a professional
environment and we deliver the best solution available.
We apply these values in creating your tomorrow today…

Although the essence of an engineering project is a series of
techniques, calculations and designs of different structures, in
our opinion, it is much more than this. This is the philosophy
behind our project management and value-added engineering.
We feel strongly that it is our duty to provide our customers
with the tools required to determine and evaluate the possible
implications of a project’s life cycle: From the initial design
process to final decommissioning.
We wish to encourage and stimulate holistic thinking and
solutions. This may include the specification and exploration of
the interests, need and wishes of different stakeholders; it may
involve parameters such as Corporate Social Responsibility and
life cycle considerations and it may require the study of return
on investment, long term expectations, climate change, and
sustainability.
Experience shows that it makes good economic sense to base
decisions on the best available information. If problems are
addressed during the early stages of a project, they will have the
smallest negative impact.

The marine environment has always been important to Denmark
– with 7,300 km of coastline, close to 100 ports and one of the
largest merchant fleets in the world. NIRAS has its background
in these facts and has for 80 years been an important player in
the field of design of ports – in Denmark and world wide. In
the past four decades, port terminals in more than 60 countries
have been part of our portfolio.
PORTS ENGINEERING
• Container terminals
• General cargo terminals
• Oil and gas terminals
• Dry bulk terminals
• Ferry and cruise terminals
• Small craft harbours
Maritime engineering is complex and involves a series of
engineering skills (structural, hydraulic, geotechnical) and
environmental engineering. These skills have been combined to
perfection in the design of some of the world’s largest off shore
wind farms. These are located in the North Sea and the Irish
Sea. Foundation of 4 MW wind mills in 30 metres of water is
challenging!
OFF SHORE ENGINEERING
• Off shore windfarms
• Wave energy plants
• Navigational aids
Coastal engineering is also among the skills mastered by NIRAS’
engineers. By combining vast experience with numerical modelling, projects for coastal protection, coastal stabilisation, and
beach resorts have been developed in many parts of the world.
COASTAL AND HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING
• Dredging and reclamation
• Coastal and river hydraulic modelling
• Flood management
• Beach resorts
• Coastal Zone Management (CZM)

Our international advisory services cover all phases of a building project. Our assistance is based on a broad and thorough
understanding of the construction process and covers proposals,
planning, design, supervision, and site management as well as
maintenance and operations.
NIRAS has devised a new method, Active Construction Management, of organising and managing building projects for the
benefit of all stakeholders.
The method, which is built on advanced IT applications, furthers
co-operation and increases productivity by keeping costs low. As a
result, the value of a project increases, benefiting our customers.

In the early seventies, the first major oil crisis generated increased interest in energy and a need for new solutions. NIRAS
played a significant role in introducing natural gas to the Danish
society. At the same time, we began generating the knowledge
required to create a competence centre for energy.
Today, we apply our expertise to projects varying from the
conservation of limited oil and gas resources, to the exploitation
of alternative energy sources, the creation of low energy
buildings, the introduction of energy-efficient industrial
techniques and much more; and we always respect the need for
a balance between growth, development, and environmental
issues such as biodiversity, global warming, and sustainable
solutions.
NIRAS has a special focus on climate change, which has lead
us to develop cutting edge skills in renewable energy, notably
biogas, biofuels, and energy from biomass and waste. We
recognise that climate change is a global issue, and see carbon
credits as a natural part of any project that reduces emissions of
green house gasses.
