A Sense of Place
A collection of leather
rugs designed by
Claesson Koivisto Rune
In an iconic image, late artist Joseph
Beuys is seated in a sofa by his desk,
speaking on his phone. The floor of the
study is covered by whole leather hides,
stitched together. To put leather on the
floor seems at first like an odd thing.
But when you think of it – it is in many
ways the perfect material. Natural
and durable, it looks good even after
years of fierce use. Furthermore,
it is a responsible use of what is in
fact a by-product from the meat and
dairy industry.
For their architectural project, the inde/
jacobs gallery building, in Marfa, Texas,
Claesson Koivisto Rune designed a rug.
Inspired by heavy duty Texas work
and farming gear, durable leather
became the obvious choice. The design is
now complemented with two more rugs
forming a collection named A Sense
of Place.
The collection is manufactured by
Tärnsjö Tannery and all handmade in
vegetable-tanned organic leather. All
rugs are numbered edition. Available in
various sizes and colours.

The great roman road Via Appia Antica
connected Rome with southern Italy. It
is still partially intact today, 2300 years
after the first stretch was laid. Built
as it is of solid blocks of stone, neatly
fitted together. The rug is sized by
adding or substracting ”blocks” to
the pattern.

Saddles and boots have always been
made of leather for its strength and
wear resistance. How appropriate then
to make a rug, that has to endure
public openings and private parties,
in that same material.

The farmlands of the great American
Midwest appear like endless man-made
patterns, as seen from the airplane
window. Growing fields in perfect lines.
Each field with its own direction, every
field next to the other.
