Dear Parents
I thought that you would like to know what your child will be studying over the next half term. I hope that
this information will be useful so that you can help support your child’s studies in school.
English - The pupils will complete the class reading books Prince Caspian or The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe by CS Lewis and use them as source material for work in drama. Pupils will also work on
narrative story techniques including similes, metaphors and interesting word choices.
Maths - The pupils will rehearse mental addition and subtraction strategies and apply skills to decimals.
Pupils will also consolidate methods of multiplication, identify rules of divisibility and also learn to read,
write and interpret 24-hour digital clock times.
Science - The pupils will be exploring a science topic of ‘changing state’ this half term. Pupils will use their
understanding to explain a range of familiar phenomena such as melting and freezing. Experimental and
investigative work will be related to making observations, taking measurements, identifying patterns and
suggesting explanations for observations.
Art - This half term the pupils will have the opportunity to make Egyptian canopic jars which links with
their history studies.
French - Pupils will learn the core language for describing animals and people following the well known
fable 'The Tortoise and the Hare'. We will also introduce the topic of time.
Games - Boys in year 5 will continue with football until Easter. The skills that will be taught are first touch
control, accurate passing and moving into good positions to receive a pass. The girls will be continuing to
develop their netball and hockey skills.
Geography - The pupils will be learning about the landscape, buildings, culture and food of countries that
make up the European Union. Following on from their enthusiastic volcanoes projects, pupils will work in
pairs to complete a more detailed presentation about an individual EU country.
History - The pupils will be studying the Ancient Egypt topic and considering questions such as "Why was
the Nile so Important?" and "Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead?” Parents can now follow what
their pupils are doing in humanities (and any other subject taught by Mrs Jones) on the school’s twitter
account: @Teachers_RHS
ICT - Y5M pupils will be continuing their study of blogs and also developing their understanding of the
Scratch software.Y5G will be completing a unit of work called "We are advertisers”. The unit will culminate
with the children producing a short film to advertise a product using Movie Maker to put it all together.
Music - The pupils will be completing a topic about music that describes trains. Using keyboards, pupils will
perform a short piece in time with a backing track that illustrates a steam train's journey. In their composing
activities the main focus is rhythm.
RS - The pupils will be studying Judaism and finding out about the different festivals before visiting an
orthodox synagogue
Technology - The pupils will be completing their moving picture books looking at implementing their lever
and pivot mechanisms. They will also be adding the literature to their pages and using ICT to create the
correct font and text size.
The pupils will also have the Easter Egg competition to look forward to which will take place on Monday
31st March. (I will send out a separate letter for this). I do hope that you find this information useful so that
