Family Page: What’s the Height? Check out our Electric Words for this week! Ask your child all about them and try using them at home and on the go. ELECTRIC WORDS height: how tall someone or something is inch: a specific length shorter than your thumb measure: to figure out the size or weight of something shrank: made or got smaller shrink: to make or get smaller We’ve also been learning how to measure and are finding things that are one inch tall. You can keep the learning going! At Home How many things can you find that are one inch tall? Give your child a paper clip or ruler and travel together around the house on an “inch hunt.” You can use the paper clip or ruler as your measuring tool (a standard paper clip is one inch, as are a postage stamp and a quarter). Make a list of everything that you find. Draw two dots on a piece of paper and ask your child how many inches apart they are. Get out your measuring tool and find out. Then let your child draw dots for you and have you guess. With a tape measure, measure the different members of your family. How many feet tall is each person? How many inches? On the Go As you are walking around outdoors, talk about what it would be like to be one inch tall. Ask your child, “What would a leaf look like if you were only an inch tall? What would an ant look like?” Then ask your child, “Would you like to be one inch tall? Why or why not?” For more games and ideas, go to www.pbs.org/parents/electriccompany. 148
