It is the first month of winter and the last month of the year. December was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar. It gets its name from the Latin word “decem”, which means tenth. However, when the Romans added January and February to the calendar, it became the twelfth month, but they still kept the name. December has the shortest daylight hours and marks the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest days in the Southern Hemisphere, as it is the beginning of summer. December is known around the world as a family time of celebration honoring cultures, religions and traditions that have been humanity for hundreds of years. “Read a New Book” Month Open up your mind and let your imagination wander this December during “National Read a New Book Month”. Reading is the most vital part in an education that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Whether you are a child or an adult, reading a book can help your communication skills as well as your vocabulary. By reading stories to your child at night time and teaching them how to recite the alphabet and sound out words, children will begin to pick up on the natural learning process associated with reading. Once you learn how to read you never forget. Better readers are more confident students. Tribute to Walt Disney Flowers of the Month The December birth flowers are holly and narcissus (specifically the paper white). The holly symbolizes your wish for happiness. Although some animals and birds enjoy holly berries, they are semi-toxic to humans. Deer avoid eating holly. Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago on December 5, 1901. He was an American entrepreneur, animator, voice actor and film producer. A pioneer of the animation industry, he produced several developments in the production of cartoons. Disney developed an early interest in drawing. He took art classes as a boy and got a job as a commercial illustrator at the age of 18. He moved to Hollywood in the early 1920s and set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy. Walt developed the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, his first highly success, he also provided the voice for his creation in the early years. As the studio grew, Disney became more adventurous introducing synchronized sound, full-color-three-strip Technicolor, feature length cartoons and technical developments in camera. The’ results seen in features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, both Fantasia and Pinocchio in 1940, Dumbo in 1941 and Bambi in 1942. In the 1950s, Disney expanded into the amusement park industry and in 1955 he opened Disneyland. The narcissus conveys that you want your beloved t stay just the way they are. While there are many types of narcissus, the paper white is the winter-growing variety and the birth flower for December The Wright Brothers The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who invented and built the world's first successful airplane and made the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. The children will learn about these two brothers and get a great opportunity to design their own planes out of paper, clothes pins, paper towel rolls, popsicle stick and much more, using their imagination and creativity.
