Y Ready, Set, READ!
Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
When Jean Craighead George was in kindergarten she got her
first pet—a turkey vulture. This is not as unusual as it sounds. Her
family loved animals of all kinds. Her father worked as a scientist for
the U. S. Forest Service. Her two brothers both grew up to study bears.
When Jean grew up, she became an author of children’s books.
She wrote more than 100 of them. It makes sense that she would
write about the rugged wilderness and its hardy inhabitants. In
My Side of the Mountain, a young boy survives on his own in the
mountains of New York State. In Juliet of the Wolves, a 13-year-old
girl befriends a pack of wolves. The pack helps her survive in the
challenging wilds of Alaska. In 1973, Jean won a prized Newbery
Medal, the highest honor given to writers of children’s books.
Along with her husband, John George, Jean kept up a love
of wildlife and wild animals. Their household was a zoo with its
beavers, owls, crows, and dozens and dozens of dogs and cats.
