Hello Show Planner,
farewell catalogue &
pocket guide
We’re making some important changes which relate to the IMEX catalogue and your
exhibitor listing. The biggest change of all is that, aer many happy years, we’re waving
goodbye to our printed catalogue.
However, we also know that many of you love the convenience of a printed guide so we’re
launching a smaller, more useful ‘Show Planner’. This 48-page, A4, Show Planner will be
magazine style with a fold-out floor plan, event and education listings, partner
acknowledgements and an easy-to-read A-Z exhibitor list. (The Show Planner also
replaces our Pocket Guide - potential sponsors and advertisers, please take note).
The advertising will be limited to around 18 pages and therefore represents a fantastic
promotional opportunity for the companies included, on the basis that the whole product
is set to be a very concise 48 pages and will be the only product available alongside the
Daily.
Finally, we used to print 4,000 catalogues for IMEX in Frankfurt (at nearly 300 pages) –
working out at 2.7 tons, about the same weight as a baby blue whale! By saving all that
paper we’re also living up to the sustainability values we hold so dear at IMEX.

San Francisco celebrates art,
architecture and food
2016 is shaping up to be a historic one
for San Francisco. One of the city’s
most beloved art installations will
become a permanent fixture – the
Bay Lights, Leo Villareal’s
monumental light sculpture made up
of 25,000 LED lights, will now add
shine and sparkle to the western
span of the San Francisco Oakland
Bay Bridge from dusk to dawn, yearround.
One of the most acclaimed museums
in the U.S. reopens this year. The
expanded 235,000 sq. . SFMOMA
(San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art) includes seven levels of diverse
art experiences, indoor and outdoor
galleries, and nearly 15,000 sq. . of
free, art-filled public space. Across
the city, wearable works of art will be
on display at the de Young Museum

San Francisco’s annual celebration of

returns to the Fort Mason Center for

who’s who of Bay Area chefs showing

Australia’s business events industry
has a reputation for delivering
successful events that consistently
exceed expectations. To ensure that
Australia’s cities and venues remain
competitive on the international stage,
massive investment has been dedicated
from state governments into capital
cities across the country. Thousands of
new hotel rooms are being built and
additional flight routes will be opened
thanks to renewed airline partnerships.
Key infrastructure developments
underway include the AU$1 billion
development of ICC Sydney scheduled
to open this December. The convention
centre will be capable of holding four
fully separate concurrent events of
more than 12,000 delegates and will
have a total exhibition capacity of
40,000 sq. m. The surrounding Darling
Harbour will feature a new 600-room
hotel by 2017 and new retail and
entertainment spaces.
In Melbourne the AU$210 million start
of stage two of the Melbourne
Convention and Exhibition Centre will
significantly increase the footprint by
20,000 sq. m. In Brisbane proposals
have been put forward for the
development of the Queen’s Wharf
Brisbane, an iconic world-class resort
and entertainment precinct that will
feature five hotels, including RitzCarlton, which will bring over 1,110 new
premium hotel rooms to the city
centre. A pedestrian bridge will provide
access to South Bank, making the
development within walking distance
of the Brisbane Convention &
Exhibition Centre.

Another world-class year for London
2015 was a great year for London. Hailed the world’s
number one tourist destination by Mastercard’s Global
Destinations Cities Index, London welcomed major
conferences and events including London Technology
Week, Advertising Week Europe (both returning this
year) and the European Society of Cardiology’s most
successful congress to date.
Between 2009 and 2014, London saw an increase of
more than 28% in business visits, with 3.3 million in
2014, proving the city more aractive than ever for
event professionals. 2016 is set to be another
momentous year. Landmark openings to add to the
existing 1,535 hotels in London include two Park Plaza
hotels in Park Royal and Waterloo, the Four Seasons
Hotel at Ten Trinity Square and the Nobu Hotel
Shoreditch London. The city will welcome
groundbreaking events, such as the AI Summit and
New Scientist Live, along with major congresses,
including the European Respiratory Society and the
European League Against Rheumatism.
Celebrations and events are planned to mark the 40th
anniversary of punk, the 400th anniversary of
Shakespeare’s death and the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Harry Poer will return to London for new adventures
on the stage and the first-ever International Rolling
Stones’ exhibition will open. The stage is set for
another world-class year.

ESS than 40% of event planners are creative thinkers despite 71% believing they have a creative approach to their
work, according to new research by London & Partners in partnership with supplier directory MICEBOOK.com.
The research, which was developed to mark the launch of
the London Convention Bureau’s Love the Event, Love the Experience campaign, also reveals that while 53% of event professionals feel under pressure to deliver innovative events, less
than a third of respondents say that risk-taking is encouraged
by their organisation. Only one third said that they were allowed free time to think, and only 32 per cent agreed that creative excellence is rewarded by their organisations.
More than 400 event planners were invited to find out
whether planning of events is dominated by rational leftbrained or emotional right-brained thinkers. With under 40%
of respondents shown to be right-brain thinkers, the study
highlights that global event planners must push themselves
to embed creativity within their workplaces in order to deliver
bold, dynamic events.
Tracy Halliwell, director of business tourism and major
events at London & Partners, said: “Creativity and innovation
are growing ever more important as clients demand event activations that set them apart from their competitors and deliver
enduring memories for consumers. The experience itself is
now what drives the event, but it’s only by combining pioneering ideas with concrete solutions that we can truly surprise
and delight.”
Respondents were tested using a 30-Second Brain Test devised by agency Sommer+Sommer. Its chief creative officer,
Leonard Sommer, said: “An event without an extraordinary experience certainly has less impact as memory systems in the
brain are not fully activated. To ensure an event leaves a lasting
brand impression, event planners need to incorporate unique
emotional experiences, both to make them memorable and to
help overarching messages resonate”.

pering creativity, with another 53 per cent blaming budget limitations. However, three-quarters of those surveyed believe
that their team members are free to deliver creative ideas.
Chetan Shah, founder and CEO of MICEBOOK.com, said:
“Whilst time-constraints and restricted budgets can sometimes
hinder creativity, a balance is always needed between the creative and the logical. Great teams bring together a mix of personalities, approaches to work and creative or logical attributes.”

Powerful voices
At this morning’s opening ceremony, David
Dubois, president & CEO of IAEE and immediate past chair of the Convention Industry
Council, will deliver the keynote address.
David has been a strong proponent of efforts
to expand the global reach of the meetings,
exhibitions and events industry, emphasising
its worldwide impact on the economy and
overall marketplace.
In the audience will be about 40 government representatives from around the world
including ministers, senior regional politicians
and policy makers. They are visiting the exhibition today before taking part, with 80
industry leaders, in the 14th annual IMEX
Politicians Forum. The main theme is building
and sustaining a successful meetings industry with keynote speaker the Hon Minister
Stuart Ayres, Minister for Trade, Tourism and
Major Events for New South Wales detailing
‘How Meetings and Events Can Fulfil Political
Ambition’.
Education take aways
With more than 180 education sessions at
IMEX this year, there are seminars and workshops to match every need. The Inspiration
Hub, home to all the show floor education, will
host experts exploring ten different tracks.
CMP/CEU and ISES points can also be accrued at many sessions. New for this year is
a series of short and snappy TED-style talks
focused on ‘Trends and Future-Think’ brought
to you by the Swedish Network of Convention
Bureaus.
The sharing economy is a hot topic at the
show this year. To help all sectors of the global
meetings and events industry better understand the implications of this new business
model, it will be explored through several
seminars including a panel session (9:00,
Wednesday) of sharing economy pioneers
discussing ‘How can we work with the new
sharing economy?’
The education programme also aims to
meet buyers’ individual needs. ‘Business is
Personal’ is a new theme covering a series of
activities that will help buyers and exhibitors
to grow and develop both professionally and
personally with sessions on leadership skills,
developing confidence and fostering strong
connections. These will focus on personal
Dedicated features
Yesterday PCMA brought its prestigious Business School to Europe for the first time alongside IMEX in Frankfurt, hosted by Congress
Center Messe Frankfurt. At Exclusively Corporate @IMEX, 80 corporate meeting and
event planners heard leading business strategist, Dr Kaihan Krippendorff, explain how to
develop ‘mental agility’ (see page 8). Similarly,
300 association professionals from 40 countries attended Association Day yesterday,
where they learned how to keep their association relevant, as well as networking with
peers and industry suppliers at Association
Evening.
There are thousands of opportunities for
everyone, to do business, learn or meet; now
it’s time to seize them. It’s going to be a
superb week.

Convening Leaders looks
to restructure events
P
CMA’s annual Convening Leaders is
often considered ‘the’ incubator for new
ideas in the meetings industry. PCMA believes that Convening Leaders is the place to
take event risks so participants can witness
firsthand how they turn out. Often, these
risks are successful and are repeated, sometimes they are thrown out and participants
start over. At other times, the successful
pieces of an experiment can be built on for
the next time. In all cases, the thought
process in planning this industry event remains the same – everything is a teaching
moment.
The next Convening Leaders event is to
be held in Austin, Texas, on 8-11 January,
2017, and even more risks will be taken. It’s
clear that as the business of meetings and
events continues to evolve, what was important 15 years ago is not necessarily important at all in today’s environment. Design is
no longer something added to enhance
business events, it is the core of the participant’s experience. PCMA believes future
events will not be programmed as much as
they will be designed and those that seek
professional and organisational success,
need design skills.
How the industry collectively gets there is
no longer driven by the resources it controls,
but how it discovers new possibilities through
the power of collaboration.
Convening Leaders 2017 will gather together new thinkers and designers, from
both in and outside the events industry, to
lead three days of interactive labs that connect strategy, innovation and business networking to power growth. Registration opens
on 12 September.

Industry must demonstrate
resilience in testing times
Recent world events have threatened order and economic stability. The meetings industry must remain resolute, says
Joachim König, JMIC president
R
ECENT terrorist incidents are putting us all
to the test, and the results will be of major
consequence not simply in the immediate future
but for the long-term survival of our industry.
A quick look at the travel-related impacts of
global incidents suggests that business travel,
and particularly travel related to meetings and
conventions, were both the most resilient and
the first to recover from such setbacks. Certainly this was the case in the aftermath of the
global financial crisis, where association meetings in particular were least affected in terms
of both attendance and cancellations. In fact,
a case can be made that it was the continued
support from this sector that kept the industry
alive during what was a very challenging time.
But the recent terrorist incidents represent
an even greater challenge in that they not only
invoke the fear factor but will inevitably result
in even greater security measures and potentially even a weakening of cross-border agreements that have facilitated travel in recent
years. Together, these will reduce travel inclinations at a time when industry recovery was
only just beginning to gain traction.
But as has been pointed out so many times
before, to succumb to the threat simply delivers
the kinds of wins those responsible are hoping
for – the disruption of global exchanges and
economic prosperity that have made the world
a better and more tolerant place. And as the
clear leaders in this respect for so many years,
this is a threat we must do all we can to resist.
So far, anecdotal evidence suggests the pattern has held: even in those areas hardest hit,
there have been relatively few event cancellations even as leisure tourism has suffered significant impacts. Once again, the desire to
meet has outweighed the desire of others to
keep that from happening. Let’s keep it up. We
have a legacy of leadership in driving travel recovery and now more than ever that needs to
be maintained.

ONSULTANTS are used in just about every
industry. Even presidential candidates rely
on the expertise of consultants to help them
navigate the tricky waters of an election cycle.
Candidates, managers, and organisations rely
on consultants because they are experts in
their field.
In today’s meetings industry, planners are
being asked to do more with less, while at the
same time being asked to deliver a unique
meeting experience for their attendees and
satisfy their meeting stakeholders. Convention
and visitors bureau (CVBs) are there to help, so
why not let destination experts take some of
the strain of meetings planning.
Here are seven ways CVBs offer consultative
advice to meeting planners;
1. A fresh perspective: Want to step outside
the ordinary and offer events that are
unique? The CVB consultant can provide a
fresh perspective on how to incorporate the
unique aspects of the location into a programme.
2. Expertise and specialised knowledge: You
don’t need to spend time figuring out a destination’s logistics, hotel package, or transportation options. CVBs have specialised
knowledge in planning an effective programme and staying on budget.
3. Best practices and proven methodology: CVB
consultants work with planners of every size
and type, from a ten-person board meeting to
large citywide events. Let their proven methods and the best and most efficient ways of
achieving your meetings objectives guide you.
4. Strategic partner: One of the most valuable services CVB consultants offer is their
ability to listen, assess, and understand
what meeting planners are trying to accomplish, and then match those goals to
the right solution.
5. Analytical horsepower: The CVB is the key
source in obtaining and sharing vital destination demand factors, historical occu-
pancy data, meeting history, and help to
understand the overall economic value of
their event.
6. Advocate and ally: As your ally and advocate
in the destination, your CVB will promote the
total value of a meeting to the community,
leverage their community relationships, and
help to solve any problems that may occur
before and during a meeting.
7. Cost savings: These services provided by
the CVB are free for planners to use. CVBs
are funded primarily through hotel occupancy taxes and/or assessments from organisations vested in tourism.
To connect with your CVB consultant and to
take advantage of their free consultative advice in over 150 destinations, visit empowerMINT.com, the DMAI-powered personal

60 second guide: ICC Sydney
What is it?
The International Convention Centre Sydney
is set to be Australia’s first and largest integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment centre when it opens in December of
this year. Built on the former site of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, the ICC
has been three years in building and represents a €1billion investment. The ICC is one
major part of an urban renewal project centred on Darling Harbour. The development will
be a mix of business, residential and open
space, that will reinvigorate this recreational
centre of Sydney.
What does it offer?
ICC Sydney consists of three conjoined structures: ICC Sydney Theatre, ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre and ICC Sydney Convention
Centre. It will have more than 70 meeting
rooms, three theatres and two formal ballrooms. For meetings organisers, it will be capable of holding three entirely separate,
self-sufficient, concurrent events in convention
spaces for 2,500, 1,000 and 750 people. It
will also include a flexible space of 2,500m²
and the largest ballroom in Sydney for up to
2,000 people. The ICC Exhibition Centre and
Entertainment Centre will include 35,000m²
of exhibition space, which can be divided into
smaller spaces.
04
Anything else?
There’s a 5,000m² event deck, including a
1,000 m² lounge and bar area to soak up all that
lovely Sydney sunshine. The venue is also promoting itself as somewhere that food really matters. Its Feed Your Performance philosophy
acknowledges that the nutritional value of food
is just as important as its provenance. The ICC
aims to deliver ‘smart’ menus comprising fresh,
seasonal and ethically sourced ingredients, expertly combined to drive physical and mental
performance.
Oh, and the 600-bed ICC Sydney Hotel is set
to be the city’s largest 5-star hotel when it opens
next year. The 35 storey structure will be a managed by Accor as a Sofitel hotel.
Who is going to be using it?
The ICC has confirmed 35 exhibitions for 2017
with a further 30 under negotiation. Events have
been secured with all of the major exhibition operators in Australia, including Reed Exhibitions,
Diversified Communications Australia, Expertise
Events, Australasian Gaming Expo and Boating
Industry Association, which runs the iconic and
much loved Sydney International Boat Show.
20 large international conventions have been
secured for ICC Sydney, including the International Chamber of Commerce World Chambers
Federation, 2017; World Chambers Congress,
2017, and Sibos, 2018.
