For The Football Stadia Improvement Fund | Annual Report 2002/03 10 Spectators The largest part of the work of the FSIF has been improving spectator facilities at grounds throughout the country Particularly the construction and the redevelopment of stands. The FSIF has provided over £7m for essential stand improvement work worth over £35m. Over 100 clubs have made the most of the funding available through FSIF grants creating a new generation of spectator stands, to meet the requirements of the modern game. NOTHWICH VICTORIA Thanks in part to a £500,000 grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund Northwich Victoria have been able to start construction on a new home ground. The FSIF grant now means that Vics’ fans can look forward to some of the best facilities in the league at their new Victoria Stadium, which will house 4,500 spectators, over 1,200 of which will be seated. Included in the design are modern and inclusive facilities for disabled fans, along with easy access and accommodation in the covered new Main Stand. The new site will replace the historic Drill Field, where football has been played since 1875, which has been recognised as the oldest football ground in the world but which was unable to cope with the demands of the modern game and the expansion of football in the town. David Stone, Chairman of Northwich Victoria, expressed the gratitude of the Northwich Victoria Board: “We are absolutely delighted with the award, one of the largest given to a club at our level and we would like to thank the FSIF for making this available to us. In addition to the maximum improvement grant of £400,000, the Fund has awarded £100,000 towards the relocation costs, which means that the Victoria Stadium can be completed to the standard first envisaged.” The Football Stadia Improvement Fund | Annual Report 2002/03 11 CCTV Improvements in safety and security for fans has led to an increasing amount of CCTV surveillance on match days Advances in security systems has co-incided with a decrease in violence, and racial abuse and an increasing number of families attending matches. Almost 20 clubs now boast state of the art CCTV systems at their grounds to which the FSIF has contributed over half a million pounds. The importance of these projects cannot be over estimated, from revamped control centres, to providing police and security officers with hand held systems, FSIF cash is now making our grounds a safer and more enjoyable experience for millions of fans every season. The Football Stadia Improvement Fund | Annual Report 2002/03 12 HARTLEPOOL UNITED A FSIF grant of £34,350 allowed third division Hartlepool United to replace their antiquated CCTV system. The previous cameras did not allow full coverage of the ground making any crowd disturbances difficult to deal with effectively. Nine dome cameras and five static colour cameras plus improvements to the control centre and DVD recording facilities now allow the police and stewards full coverage of Victoria Park.
