LASSA FEVER - NIGERIA

Cases of Lassa Fever have been reported in Nigeria since 21 December 2016
As of 11 January 2017, a total of 30 cases and 14 deaths (CFR=46.7%) have
been reported from three states (Ogun, Plateau and Taraba). These areas had
been declared Lassa outbreak free 4 months ago. So far 13 have been
laboratory confirmed. A total of 177 contacts are being actively followed up
WHO supporting coordination, case management, sensitization of clinicians
and community, infection prevention and control and surveillance
(epidemiological and laboratory)
Inadequate supplies (PPEs, lab reagents) and operational costs to conduct
contact tracing identified as main challenges to the ongoing response. PPEs
shipped to the country with the support of WHO have arrived in country
NECROTISING CELLULITIS – SAO
TOME AND PRINCIPE
• A total of 940 cases have been reported between weeks 38 of 2016 to 01
of 2017 from all 7 districts in Sao Tome
• Exposed population is estimated to be 193,711. 19 samples were
analyzed (10 in CP Cameroon and 9 in Portugal) but were negative for
Mycobacterium ulcerans using PCR and ZN microscopy. In addition there
was no growth on culture. Five hospitals have been designated to
provide case management which is currently palliative
• More investigation including biopsy is needed to establish the diagnosis
in order to institute the right treatment. WCO has requested for
technical support to support the investigation. Available guidelines on
Buruli Ulcer have been shared with country
FIEVRE DE LA VALLEE DE RIFT
NIGER
• Latest update available was Situation Report from 7 December
2016
• As of 7 December total of 351 cases (suspect and confirmed)
and 33 deaths reported
• 0 deaths reported since week 44 – to verify if this still stands
• Number of cases had a steep decline in early December (from 42
suspected cases recorded in week 48 to just 3 cases in week 49)
YELLOW FEVER
ANGOLA and DRC outbreaks under control; no new cases reported. 12
million people vaccinated last year in campaign led by WHO
GUINEA
• On 31 December 2016, Guinea reported positive cases of Yellow Fever
• As of 3 January 2017, a total of 4 confirmed cases (1 from Gaoual, 1 from
Boke and 2 from Telimile) and one death have been reported
• The country has already initiated a vaccination campaign in the affected
areas focusing on at-risk population using vaccines available in country.
MENINGITIS
BENIN
• 13 January 2016: WHO informed of suspected cases of meningitis in
Malanville City
• Total of 12 cases and 4 deaths reported since 8 January
• A joint MOH/WHO team currently conducting a field epidemiological
investigation
• 7 CSF samples have been collected and definitive results are awaited
• MoH organizing a mass vaccination campaign in the municipalities of
Boukombé, Cobly, Matéri, Kérou and Tanguiéta once the outbreak is
confirmed
DENGUE– BURKINA FASO
• The worst recorded outbreak of Dengue to hit
Burkina Faso was confirmed on 17 october 2016
• Majority of cases concentrated in Ouagadougou,
where, up to 7 January, 1500 probable cases and
20 deaths have been registered
• For the whole country, a total of 2536 suspected
cases of which 1564 probable cases and 20
deaths (increase of 318 suspect and 116
probable cases since last month)
• The outbreak is largely under control with small
numbers or zero new suspect cases reported
daily

Situation
• Depuis le 24 novembre le laboratoire national de référence des fièvres hémorragiques a
acquis la capacité de confirmation biologique des cas de dengue
• Le renforcement de la surveillance de la dengue a permis d’améliorer la détection des
cas à tous les niveaux
Actions entreprises
• Lancement le 22 décembre d’une campagne de salubrité dans la commune de
Ouagadougou (destruction des gites larvaire d’aèdes)
• Pulvérisation des domiciles des cas confirmes de Ouagadougou et de leur voisinage (55
domiciles de cas confirmes, 200 domiciles des voisins)
• Pulvérisation spatiale à Ouagadougou en cours
Contraintes / Faiblesses
• Insuffisance de TDR pour le diagnostic de la dengue dans les structures sanitaires
publiques
• Faible complétude des données transmises par les formations sanitaires privées.
ZIKA - ANGOLA
• Two cases of Zika have been reported from Angola. The first was a 41
year old French citizen who returned from Angola. The second was
indigenous in origin and has been laboratory confirmed and officially
released by the Angolan Health Authorities
• MOH is strengthening existing surveillance, including laboratory testing of
suspected cases.
• Vector control is being intensified
CHOLERA
DOSSO, NIGER: Outbreak over since week 44
GHANA: Epidemic finished before the end of 2016 (2 incubation periods did not yield a
single case)
ANGOLA
• 4 January 2017, Angola reported an outbreak of Cholera in the province of Zaire and
Cabinda
• As of 8 January 108 suspected cases and 6 deaths (CFR = 5.6%). 90% of the cases are
above 5 years of age and 63% are male
• MOH implementing a coordinated response together with partners
BURUNDI
• 30 December – a first case of suspected cholera reported
• As of 10 January, 146 cumulative suspected cases notified and 21 admitted to
treatment centre. No deaths registered.
